I am hoping someone can verify what I have just been told by a friend who claims that those immigrants who came 2nd class and up were not recorded at Ellis Island. They were given physical exams while aboard ship and are not on the lists posted. Should this be the case, perhaps this is why some of us are having difficulty locating our relatives. Ellis Island was the site of the immigrant processing center. The first and second class were examined and released from the ship while the third class passengers were taken by barge to Ellis Island. The passenger lists were prepared long before the arrival and the first and second class passengers are listed.
