    3. Bill: Even if you have the correct Maggie Brady, you may have to be flexible about the birth date. Many of my Irish ancestors - especially in a rural setting like Mayo -- are listed as baptized before their civil birth date. The reason is that the Irish were fined for reporting births late, and some lived far from the main townland where birth registration was performed. To avoid the fine, some reported the birth as occuring considerably after the actual birth date. In sum, I have found baptism records to be more accurate, and you may need to look several months after the supposed birth date to find the actual civil birth registration. According to family history, Margaret was born in Conty Mayo, Ireland on 31 May 1873. She married William Walsh (Welch) in Chicago on 13 April 1895. The Chicago marriage certificate gives his name as William J. Welch 35 years old and her name as Maggie Brady 22 years old. I am about 100% sure these ar my gr grandparents, but because William's surname is not Walsh and Margaret's forename is Maggie, there was some doubt. However, because I am aware that Maggie is a common nickname for Margaret - having several Margarets in my family (Marge - mother, Peggy - sister, and Marg - a cousin) - and that Walsh being pronounced with a thick brogue would sound like Welch. Actually, William appears in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census from Chicago and Lemont township as Welch. His grave states Welch. The 1900 Chicago census says Walsh. They had four children: William, Margaret, Catherine, and Thomas. William, Jr. died in WWI aboard a ship (the Von Steuben). Thomas died at an early age - not sure of what. Margaret married Edwin Columbus O'Toole. They had 2 daughters - Margaret (my mother) and Joan. Catherine married William O'Connor. I am looking for any Brady connections to Margaret or Maggie. I have no information regarding Maggie's parents at all. Some have sent me information from County Mayo, but none with a birthdate of 31 May 1873. Any help would be appreciated.Bill in Peoria, IL., USA _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
