I am researching a family line whose oldest known member was named William Fitzpatrick. He came from County Mayo to Canada in late 1700's/early 1800's and eventually settled in what is Ontario today. The only known evidence of where he came from is from two sources - his tombstone which states 'County Mayo, Ireland', and a transcription of an interview of his grandson who said the family came from a place in Mayo called Ampworth (that is how it was spelled in the transcription) I have been told that "...Far enough back, Ampworth may have been a phonetic pronunciation of an old Gaelic placename, among several other possibilities, the most basic ' An Port ' (pron. on porth) meaning the port." Does anyone have any idea how I can take these fragmants and actually find out where my people came from in Mayo? Thank you... Trish Lewis
