Hello again Jean, Thanks for your message. I am fairly sure that my Raffertys don't come from Scotalnd. In this 'game' you daren't say 'definitely not' !! Going back to Cromwell's day, it is possible that Scottish Raffertys were among those driven over by his troops or were actually members of his force which followed them to what we now call Northern Ireland. There are plenty of Raffertys in NI, and my mother always claimed that her family came form the North, but I have yet to find evidence of it. My understanding is that the Rafferty surname originated in Sligo, who decided that this is so, I have no idea. As you saw in my original posting to the list, the whole family, living in Halifax, Yorkshire, in 1871, give their birth place as Cty Mayo, Ireland, which is next door to Sligo. The census' for '81, '91 and '01 just give Ireland. So I'm relieved to that bit of extra information to work on, and I now need to find births for all of them, and a marriage fro Patrick and Mary. Thanks for making contact. It is much appreciated. Best wishes.
