When I began searching for my gm's birthplace I had no information other than she was from Co Mayo. Learning her father's name (but not her mother's) I found 3 men of the same name having babies at the same time. A letter to the Editor of The Western People brought several responses. One pointed me to the parish and I was able to find her baptismal record. Eventually, I made contact with a relative living in the neighborhood by writing to everyone listed in the phone book. I have received responses from this site before but thought I'd just try again. He would have been born somewhere around 1864 - came to the U.S. around 1885 - Thanks for anything you can offer. That shows determination Ellen. It must have taken a lot of time to write to everyone in the local phone book. Hi Don and Ellen: I just read with great interest your exchange and remarkable success and determination. I, too, am trying to locate the birth or baptism records of my Great-grandfather, Patrick J. Fitzmaurice, born in Ballyhounis about 1843. (He married in the U.S. in 1869 and died here in 1896.) Could you please explain The Western People and how to contact them? Thank you so much for the inspiring story!
