Connaught Journal published Galway, Ireland Monday, September 22, 1823 PROVINCIAL INTELLIGENCE MAYO, CASTLEBAR, SEPT 15.- The Magistrates of this County are required, by the Lord Lieutenant's Proclamation, to assemble in this town on the 23d instant, to appoint 144 Constables, being at the rate of 16 for each barony in the County. We are gratified at the extension over the whole country, of a permanent and well organized system, from which the best results may be expected.-- Constitution On Tuesday last, Mr. Henry Tighe, Postmaster of Rathlacken, in this county, in a fit of derangement, terminated his existence, by cutting his throat with a razor.--Ibid SLIGO, SEPT. 17- On Tuesday, 9th September, the Committee of the Ladies' Association of the Union of St. John, in connection with the British and Irish Ladies' Association for the improvement of the female peasantry of Ireland, held their first regular meeting in the Grand Jury room. The parish was divided into four districts, which were sub-divided into eighteen portions, to each of which a superintendent from the Committee, and visiting Ladies, were appointed. They will also endeavour to recommend to the people the observance of cleanliness in their houses and persons, and gradually lead them to appreciate the advantages resulting from industry and order.
