Hello again Jean, Thanks for your message. I am fairly sure that my Raffertys don't come from Scotalnd. In this 'game' you daren't say 'definitely not' !! Going back to Cromwell's day, it is possible that Scottish Raffertys were among those driven over by his troops or were actually members of his force which followed them to what we now call Northern Ireland. There are plenty of Raffertys in NI, and my mother always claimed that her family came form the North, but I have yet to find evidence of it. My understanding is that the Rafferty surname originated in Sligo, who decided that this is so, I have no idea. As you saw in my original posting to the list, the whole family, living in Halifax, Yorkshire, in 1871, give their birth place as Cty Mayo, Ireland, which is next door to Sligo. The census' for '81, '91 and '01 just give Ireland. So I'm relieved to that bit of extra information to work on, and I now need to find births for all of them, and a marriage fro Patrick and Mary. Thanks for making contact. It is much appreciated. Best wishes. I just happen to have MacLysaght's SURNAMES OF IRELAND handy. The book states that Rafferty is of Co. Tyrone and Co. Louth. There is no mention of the name having a Scottish connection. There is also mention of Raftery being association with Co. Mayo. Hi Jean. All I know about Frank prior to his landing up in NZ is what's in the posting. He named his oldest son Owen after his father and his second and last as Frank after himself, so there's no way of telling if John's a family name. As you've probably discovered, McHale's a very common name in Mayo, particularly the north, so it's a bit of a needle in a haystack job tracing them. You probably also know of the most famous John McHale, the Reverend Doctor Archbishop of Tuam, known as the Lion of The West. Best regards. Garry Satherley, Lillian Rock (Aust.) Hello Listers, I've only just joined the list as I've recently discovered that my maternal 3 x grt grandparents, and the whole of the RAFFERTY family, appear in the UK census for 1871. The youngest child was 11 at this time, suggesting that the family moved to England during the 1860s. I am looking for any information or pointers that would help me trace them and their families in County Mayo, and would be pleased to exchange the details I have from the 1881, '91 & '01 census, and so on. The 1871 census shows : The family is living in Halifax, Yorkshire Patrick Rafferty, Head, married, aged 55, labourer outdoors (3 x grt grandfather) Mary Rafferty, Wife, married, aged 50 Catherine Rafferty, Daughter, unmarried, aged 23 Patrick Rafferty, Son, unmarried, aged 19 (2 x grt grandfather) Thomas Rafferty, Son, unmarried, aged 15 John Rafferty, Son, aged 13 Mary Rafferty, Daughter, aged 11 All the family are given as born in COUNTY MAYO, Ireland, and, presumably, Patrick (snr) and Mary were married in County Mayo, too. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who recognises this family or has any information that might help. Many thanks Tony High Wycombe, England

Hello I am searching for Deane in Tristia/Mount Jubilee western section of Mayo. Jack F. Kerr Pennsylvania USA
McHALE Seeking family history, imigration records relating to Francis (Frank) McHale, born somewhere in County Mayo, possibly Belmullet, about 1847, arrived New Zealand about 1867. NZ death certificate (1922) gives father as Owen McHALE, farmer, mother as Catherine O'REILLY. Send instant messages to your online friends http://au.messenger.yahoo.com
Hi Bill, My name is Chris Kennedy, I have done research on the Brady name as my Grandmother was Margaret Brady(1909-1978) from Easky, CO. Sligo. Our family is very close to the Mayo border and as I recall there are not a lot of Bradys from that neck of the woods. I might add that while my Bradys were Catholic there were some that were Protestant as reflected in the census. Hi: I just read your helpful reply below and wondered if you might have any birth or baptism information on my Great-grandfather, Patrick J. Fitzmaurice, born in Ballyhaunis (Ballyhounes), County Mayo in1843? His parents names were Thomas Fiztmaurice and Catherine Lorey. I know this much from locating his tombstone from his death in NY in 1896. So far, I've had no luck in locating his birth information or the cemetery where his parents are buried. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I am wondering if anyone on the list is interested in this Claremorris marriage on Feb 4, 1829. They had at least 5 children: Walter (1833), Thomas (1835), Anthony (1841), Michael (1848) and Honor (Honora?) in 1853. I know a lot about the Walter and Thomas, if anyone is interested. Also, does anyone know how hard was the famine in this part of Mayo??
