Hi Pat, I see you are researching Philbin from Mayo. So am I. Specifically, the Dennis Philbin/Filbin who married Margaret Walsh about 1859 in Ballintubber. Margaret was the sister of my great grandmother, Mary Walsh who married Patrick Corley about 1858. Dennis and Margaret immigrated to Cleveland Ohio with their family at which point the name switched to Filbin. Dennis died before 1890. One of their sons James b1871 was born in Mayo. To date I have no further information, no Parish, or Townland. Any information would be gratefully accepted. I'm still looking for our g/grandparent, JAMES TIMLIN Born about 1826 in Castleconnor. Was a shoemaker by trade. James married FRANCES MARY KELLY (nee CLARKE) in Skibbereen,Co. Cork, on 14 October 1857 Her father, JOSEPH CLARKE was a shokeeper in Skibbereen. Frances had been married to a William Kelly who lost his life about the time of their son, also William. was born. There were 5 children born to James and Frances when they lived at Townsend Street,Skibbereen. They departed Ireland around 1872 for Dunedin, New Zealand. My grandmother Margaret Mary Timlin was born in Dunedin. Any information would be greatfully received, Marie,New Zealand
Hi Marie, I would not be too quick to assign my great grandmother to Devon or to England. We think her parents were Irish and they were just waiting for passage to Canada. Apparently the people on Prince Edward Island, Canada were socially divided into the English and the Irish. They did not mix (although it seems that my great grandfather had a love child with an English lady). Mary Timlin was definitely an Irish lady. After they married, they left PEI and went to the next Province west, New Brunswick. This may have been because of the scandal. Mary raised the love child in New Brunswick. I do notice a similarity of Christian names. David At 12:35 AM 5/29/2007, you wrote: >Thank you David.Sadly I don't think so. Hi Marie, My greatgrandmother was Mary Tamlyn/Timlin/Tamlin. We don't know much about her. She may have been born about 1820 in Devon, England. She died about 1881 in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada. She married William Creamer. Go to the Creamer website, which we just got up today, and look at the notes on William Creamer who is #7 on the tree: http://www.creamers.name We think they met and married on Prince Edward Island, Canada. She easily could have been James Timlin's sister! I am not sure why with all the money I paid the Mayo Heritage Centre on several occasions they did not do this for me! What I found early on in their start at researching is they were not properly trained and not inquisitive enough to look beyond their noses, as my mother would say .. It was "just" a job and you know how that can go .. ...An example: My mother was born on 11/27/1898 and baptized the next day in the Keelogues parish, however not registered till the following March 27th .. They looked for a civil registration in November but never thought to look ahead - someone should have instructed them on how people did not always register the wee ones right away and advise them to look forward too .. After I gave them her baptism date they then found her ... Thought by now they would have advanced further in their research techniques .. Ed, In the British Isles Vital Records Index from LDS there are 204 entries of civil registrations for TOWEY between 1864 and 1875 .. Most of the early entries are in the town of Ballaghadereen, then later in Kilkelly and Lowpark ... Do you have any other information ??? I will be glad to send you what I found and you can sort it out .... Hello, In an online database of the Flax Growers of Ireland, 1796 - County Mayo, I found some people with the surname of my ancestors: Towey John Caslemore Mayo Towey Thomas Caslemore Mayo http://failteromhat.com/flax/mayo.htm Now, maybe these are my ancestors, maybe not. I need to see if I can tie them to this. My question is, where is Caslemore? Is it a townland, a civil parish, etc.? Is it misspelled, perhaps it is Castlemore? Did this place change names? If anyone knows where Caselmore in 1796 would be now and what sort of land district it defined, i.e., townland, civil parish, etc., please let me know! Thank you! It's worth doing a GOOGLE search with the words Achill and Lavelle together. Mayo Ireland about 1825. He died on March 13,1880. He is buried in St Michaels Cemetery in the Town of Mitchell near Sheboygan, Wisconsin USA. He married Ann Cummins born in Ireland about 1830. She died 4/12, 1909 and is buried next to James. James and Ann had 5 children all born in Wisconsin. One of the children Alice was my great grandmother who married my gr- grandfather Martin Hanahan. I am not sure if My Lavells are related to you or not. They came from the same area. Do you have any Hanahans or Bowens in your family tree. If we can make a connection with our Lavelles I may be able to find more information. We are going to Ireland in September. We were in Ireland a couple of years ago and did a lot of research on the Hanahans which took us to Tourmakeady, Mayo Co. Ireland. This year we will be mainly in the southwest but also in Monahan and Dublin. I can still do a lot of research for Mayo while I'm in Dublin.
