    1. [MAYO] McHale-Reilly-Holmes
    2. Garry and Tessa Satherley
    3. Greetings all, especially Lyn (departing) and Pat. Again tracking back on Francis McHale, now known to have arrived in New Zealand, ship Wild Duck sailing from Plymouth, arr. Wellington December, 1866, born Co. Mayo about 1847, father Owen McHale, mother Catherine (O) Reilly. I'm trying now to confirm the hypothesis that 1. Owen was the one listed in Griffiths as householder/landowner in the Cuingmore townland at junction of Loughs Conn and Cullin, civil parish Kilbelfad, RC parish Backs. 2. That Catherine was a member of (O) Reilly clan listed for Lough Conn islands, Annagh, Annaghtiege and Creeve, same parishes, Francis (O) Reilly listed three times - could it be the same one with a plot on each island or three different francises?. 3. If 1. is correct, that this Owen is the father listed for a second Owen McHale, married to Margaret (known as Peggy or Pegeen, father Thomas) Holmes, March 4, 1867. They were married at Lahardane across the pontoon bridge in Adergoole Parish and Peg may have been from Terryduff in that parish. Two children of the marriage, Mary and Owen, were baptised (69 and 76) at Knockmore RC Chapel up the road from Cuingmore, still in Backs RC parish but in Ballynahaglish civil parish (sponsors Michael McHale, twice, Honor Holmes and Mary McHale). Which would make Owen II a brother to Francis in NZ - who named his sons Owen and Francis. And a real wild card: Also seeking any word on a Mary McHale, inmate at Ballina Workhouse in 1848, pauper orphan sent to Melbourne, Australia, aboard Lady Kennaway, first employer a Catherine Brophy, parentage not recorded at the Australian end. Best regards to all seekers. Garry Satherley. --------------------------------- Yahoo!7 Mail has just got even bigger and better with unlimited storage on all webmail accounts. Find out more.

    2. When I began searching for my gm's birthplace I had no information other than she was from Co Mayo. Learning her father's name (but not her mother's) I found 3 men of the same name having babies at the same time. A letter to the Editor of The Western People brought several responses. One pointed me to the parish and I was able to find her baptismal record. Eventually, I made contact with a relative living in the neighborhood by writing to everyone listed in the phone book. 3. I did not know that Jack, but I will keep the reference until I can place it into broader context. Many years later a John Rutledge was educated in England, became a doctor and emigrated to America. His progeny in America named in their wills, relatives who lived in Somerset, England. So there is much to learn about these guys. Perhaps unrelated except by name, my 3gfather Rutledge founded a town in Missouri and called it Tyrone. Did he do that because he or his father came from Tyrone? Mysteries with solutions to live for. 3. Thank you Ellen. One correction to my last post, Rutledge is of my father's line, not my mother's. Her line was Beebe from England and Williamson from yet to be discovered. 3. Nancy I read with much interest your posting regarding your Mayo family, as you have the same family names as I, except that your dates are a couple of generations later. My great grandmother was Mary BARRETT, born c. 1843-1850 ( I haven't been able to find any 2 dates to agree, and have not been able to read the parish christening records to find a date). I've tried twice. Her parents apparently were John BARRETT and Mary MURRAY. Mary's mother is , by family lore, Mary SHERIDAN. I don't know if this is a maiden name or a married name, but the SHERIDAN is supposed to be related to Gen Philip SHERIDAN of Civil War and Chicago Fire fame. However, since his family came from County Cavan, I don't know if this is true or not. Mary BARRETT married John WELLS (WILLS) in 1872, probably in Scranton PA. My mother always said that he was from "the North", however when he died, Mary put in the death notice that he was from "Mollina Cross" (death notice wording). Actually, I have found that the family used Crossmollina in generic terms, as they actually lived in Lahardane, Addergoole Parish, about 8-10 miles south of Crossmollina on Loch Conn. Some of the family also was in Tawnama (sp) similar to the town you mention in Newport. The Wells' eventually settled in Braidwood, Will County, IL and then Chicago. An Ellen Murray married an Anthony Moffatt, possibly in Mayo, or in PA. They moved to Braidwood, also. There was also a Michael and Margaret Murray in the Braidwood area (I assume) as they were my grandmother's godparents when she was baptized in Braidwood. I don't know the relationship between Michael and Margaret-husband and wife/siblings? I have not been able to find them anywhere other than the Christening. If any of this seems to ring a bell, let me know.
