Having seen the emails flying around the past few days can I just say I cannot see what the problem has been here everyone received the message saying they had been added to facebook, but if you had looked at the message properly you would have seen that the email was addressed to mayo@rootsweb.com; therfore everone who subscribes to the list received the same email to which they immediately interpreted as their own email addresses being added to the facebook site For those of you who are more computer literate you would have realised to add you to facebook you would require you to register a login name and password, and when i saw the flurry of emails hitting the list requesting to be removed I just chuckled to myself Some people really need to gen up on the workings of internet sites and forums before becoming completely paranoid and if you dont trust the internet and dont know how it works either sell your computer or go on a course and wise up to the wonderful worlwide web. can this be an end to it now because it is getting a little tedious reading about the same thing over and over this list is about family history research not facebook accounts Tracey

Okay, enough already! All Facebook etc discussions need to be taken off list. As of now, if you want to keep your ability to post to the list, please abide by my decree...thanks for you cooperation. -- Pat Connors, visiting Salt Lake City UT, list admin http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

We've all made mistakes but we all don't make assumptions. In my other mailbox I average 20 messages a day and 19 of those messages are spam -- some with filthy subject lines. I don't know what facebook is and frankly I don't care about facebook, if I did, I would enroll myself and NOT use this mail address. Although Pat's assumption was a mistake it was in very bad judgment to turn over other people's email addresses for any personal purpose -- let's not vilify the people who spoke out -- they had every right to do so. -----Original Message----- From: mayo-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mayo-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of K Dulin Doedderlein Sent: Wednesday, October 03, 2007 1:11 PM To: mayo@rootsweb.com Subject: [MAYO] TO MUCH TO ADO abt NOTHING!! Good for you and your daughter for keeping in touch. Don't let the grumpy responses discourage you. I personally think Facebook, Myspace and Squidoo are amazing. Since I never disclose anything that someone can use against me even ON THIS LIST, it's not a problem for me. If you ever do set up a Facebook account for genealogy purposes, I'd be interested to connect with you. I have a Squidoo lens on my MAYO Donahues and I think these are the wave of the future (these being the networking sites) as I have gotten more contacts from Squidoo in 2 mos about my ancestors than from this list or Rootsweb in general in 10 years. So Don't go away angry. These new concepts are hard for "older" folks to grasp. Us younguns? (I'm 59.5) we get them and we will use them for genealogy if we want. Pat, I did not respond either way as I thought the initial email a little strange and was waiting to see what heppened. Seeing your explanation I feel so sorry for you because I saw a lot of the comments and people do go overboard at times. Oh that we were all so perfect as them and get things right on computer first time! Don't give up, I too try to help people if I see something that another person has been looking for. Just remember we are not all bad, only a few, and who needs them?! Keep in touch with your daughter, and I hope she does well. Pat Please don't quit the group. Response was generated by fear. Take care. Pat Many of us have become a bit sensitive to being out in cyber world, of which most of us are not as familiar as our kids. I sincerely applaud you for all of the work you've done for the list. You've been extremely helpful and dedicated. Please accept my apology for those of our group who have lashed out in fear. I can't imagine how hurt you must feel. Know that many of us appreciate all that you do. I also sympathize with a mother who's just had her child go off to college and is feeling that loss as well. Hang in there! I feel I need to apologise to this site for an error message that has been delivered to you all. Firstly let me point out that my youngest daughter has gone off to university, and so we could constantly keep in touch she set up a "Facebook" account. Unfortunately purely by accident an invitation was dispatched from facebook inviting you all to join. Once again let me iterate THIS WAS A MISTAKE. However the derogatory statements and insults I have received from some of your members is beyond reproach. I have been a dedicated member of this site for very long time, since the onset. On numerous occasions I have added help full information I have received from my visits to Dublin, Mayo and Rosscommon. I now fell deeply hurt by the responses I have received, I have been accused of numerous offences and feel I have been given no alternative but to subscribe.A small price to pay for a simple mistake made by a young woman wanting to keep in touch with her mother, Thanks. Patricia Green. ___________________________________________________________ Want ideas for reducing your carbon footprint? Visit Yahoo! For Good http://uk.promotions.yahoo.com/forgood/environment.html
