    1. [MAYO] Locations of Cemetaries

    3. Vickie, === I'm wondering where to look for the burial of Richard & Mary CONNOLLY GALLAGHER who lived at Ballindoo/Doocastle, Mayo. === I think you have several options open here. I noticed you received a response regarding the Sacred Heart church in Bunnanaddan, about two and a half miles NNE of Ballindoo/Doocastle. I don't know about a cemetery at the church, but Mitchell's book on Irish Churches and Graveyards shows only the church - no cemetery there. But his book has been wrong before on this sort of subject. There is a significant graveyard less than a mile NE of the Sacred Heart church, at the ruins of the 15th century Dominican Priory. I was there a few years ago but, as I don't do any genealogy, I was interested only in the priory and so didn't notice much about the cemetery. However, the Archaeological Inventory of South Sligo (publ. 2005) does have a bit to say about the graveyard: "The graveyard is still in use. It contains many 19th and 20th-century headstones and some low, uninscribed grave-markers. The earliest inscriptions on the grave-memorials are from the early 19th century." In the townland of Kilturra, about a mile and a half east of Doocastle/Ballindoo and also across the county line into Sligo, there is another graveyard around the ruins of the old parish church of Kilturra. I also visited there but, likewise, I was looking for 9th century cross-slabs and not 19th century inscribed headstones. But the AI book comes to the rescue again: "It contains a large number of uninscribed grave-markers and 19th and 20th century headstones. The earliest headstones have been recorded as 1771 and 1761." Three miles ESE of Doocastle/Ballindoo, in Mountirvine townland, is another graveyard.....this time, surrounding the remains of the 14th century Carmelite friary of Knockmore. A similar description in the Arch. Inv. book: "The graveyard is still in use. It contains many 19th- and 20th-century headstones, and some low, uninscribed gravemarkers, including some which are reused moulded stones from the friary." The book also mentions "The interior of the church contains many 19th- and 20th-century burials." The nearest burial ground relative to the townland of Ballindoo/Doocastle is right there within the very large townland itself, about a mile NW of the crossroads in the village where the school is located. The part of the townland where the Burial Ground (as marked on Discovery map 32) is located is known as Toomour. B/D townland is located in Kilturra civil parish. Also, in Co. Mayo, there is a marked Burial Ground (on the map) in the townland of Srah Lower, just 3 miles SW of the crossroads in B/D. This location is in Kilbeagh civil parish. Also, in this civil parish (and Carracastle RC parish) is an RC church in Roosky townland, just 2 miles SW of B/D crossroads. I don't know if there is a cemetery there or not (Mitchell doesn't even mention the church in his book). The contact information for Carracastle RC parish is at: === http://www.catholicireland.net/parishes/parishdetails.php?ID=1202 === The corresponding URL for Bunninaden RC parish is at: === http://www.catholicireland.net/parishes/parishdetails.php?ID=1201 === I wish I could give you more info on these latter two graveyards, but the Irish gov't. hasn't published an Archaeological Inventory of Co. Mayo yet (I'm eagerly awaiting [gr]). The Ordnance Survey letters of 1838 somehow overlook the civil parish of Kilturra - or it's included in other letters pertaining to a different parish, or with a different name. I checked for a possible Ballindoo or Doocastle parish, as that townland forms a large portion of Kilturra civil parish. Nothing. Kilbeagh is listed, but no discussion about this Burial Ground in the NE part of the civil parish. I don't think I'll follow-up with the Mayo letters.......there are over 1000 manuscript pages and, although I have a 1927 typeset copy, it's still a tedious job. Aha...... I decided to check the Sligo letters, based on the fact that the RC parish of Bunninadden extends across the border from Sligo to Mayo.......and John O'Donovan, who was in charge of this section of the Ordnance Survey, was a "good Catholic boy" from Kilkenny, who might logically put the parts of the RC parish all into one section of the letters. OK. Not much help - no mention of the burial ground (I'm typing this sort of "stream of consciousness, as you can probably tell [gr]). On to other sources. Knox's History of the county of Mayo only takes us up to the 16th century. Too early. J.F. Quinn, over a 9 year period, wrote a History of Mayo which appeared in the Western People weekly newspaper in the 1930's (he was also editor of the paper). It's a great history, but it could be better-indexed. I don't find any mention of the corner of Co. Mayo in this book of his. Back to Knox, and his book on the Dioceses of Tuam, Killala and Achonry. Now that I look at it again (I have a lot of books, and am at an age where I'm having difficulty remembered just what's in each one........), I notice that it, too, is an Early History. I think I've reached the end of the road with this one.......... Pete, in the glorious Berkshire hill in western MA.

    3. Hi there Vickie. You apparently are seeking burial locations in County Mayo of Richard and Mary Connolly who lived at Ballindoo/Doocastle Do you have knowledge that this was their place of residence AFTER residing and having their 9 children baptized in Bunninadden County Sligo Why would they move. Unless you are firm in that info, I recommend you do a process of elimination and check the church records from Bunninadden as per my earlier posting. Go to <CatholicIreland.net which posts all the diocese of Ireland and upon clicking on Achonry will bring up all the parishes of Achonry in which is listed Sacred Heart Bunninadden with an address and Ph # 071 918 3232 which is okay when dialed in Ireland. I have had excellent help from the various PP's that I have had cause to contact for help both with and without a donation. That would be up to you. Sacred Heart unfortunately do not have email. I take it from your comment about visiting this summer, you probably are located in the southern hemisphere and therefore visiting Ireland in their winter months. so safe journey and good luck on your quest. To phone call from out of the country requires the above # to be preceded by the country code 353 and drop the 0 before the 71 which is the code for Sligo. Jim in Poway California.

    3. Yes Jim I had checked with the Family History Center and there doesn't seem to be any death records for Bunnenadden parish which is the way it is sometimes. I'm going there this summer just trying to figure-out where to go. Thank you so much for your response it is much appreciated. 3. Vickie, The are two local graveyards associated with Doocastle (My family originate from Doocastle) one is Roys which is about 100 yards from the Musician monument( has a few Gallaghers on it) I have a map which will show its location if you contact me directly(attachments) The lady who has those records lives very close to the Cemetery but she is quite old.(I have a list which interested me but its far from complete in fact I have never found my own grandfather's grave) The second is Kilturra which is a few miles away it is a walled cemetery, many older graves are faded now but some are readable Unfortunately the images I have are focused on Kelehers and Marrens. I was contacted by a Saul Gallagher recently an extract is below "If you have any data on the cemetery I would be grateful to see it. We could find no physical record of my ancestors burial in either Kilturra or Doocastle cemetery (although I know for certain that both Peter Gallagher 1923 and Thomas Gallagher 1930 were indeed buried and lived only 2 fields away from Doocastle cemetery)" Regards Patrick -----Original Message----- From: mayo-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mayo-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of James E Cox Sent: 19 October 2007 05:55 To: mayo@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MAYO] Locations of Cemetaries Vickie Piper wrote: > I'm wondering where to look for the burial of Richard & Mary CONNOLLY GALLAGHER who lived at Ballindoo/Doocastle, Mayo. 1. [MAYO] Corcoran brothers from Mayo County to Canada early 1800's
    2. Brian & Cindy Schatz
    3. Hi Everyone: I am new to this message board. I have these brothers coming to Canada some earlier than others. Many of them worked for the Hudson Bay Company (HBC) here in Canada. 1) Patrick Corcoran b. abt 1787 came over in 1811 as a Red River settler and joined the HBC in 1819. 2) John Corcoran b. abt 1791 joined the HBC in 1819. 3) Thomas Corcoran b. abt 1794 joined the HBC in 1819. 4) Richard Corcoran b. abt ??? came over to Canada in 1821 from letter wrote by Thomas Corcoran to brother Patrick in 1821. 5) Edward Corcoran b. abt ??? came over to Canada in 1821 from letter wrote by Thomas Corcoran to brother Patrick Corcoran in 1821. One of the 16 letters mentions a uncle Edward Corcoran in the States (US). Also mentioned in a letter is a brother Matt Corcoran passed his examinations at Apothecary Hall in Dublin from letter wrote by Thomas Corcoran to brother Patrick Corcoran in 1821. The above John Corcoran is my 3rd grt grandfather. I have no idea who the parents were to these brothers??? According to the Hudson Bay Company's bio. sheets they were from the Parish of Crosamolina Ballina in County Mayo, Ireland. Looking for the Parents of these brothers and other decendant's of these Corcoran brothers and *sisters. *Also in a letter in 1819 it mentions some sisters also but no names in Canada. I have no idea who they were as of yet. Thank you Brian

    2. Rosemarie, Have you posted before regarding Patrick Kearney? I have a Patrick Kearney mystery in my research. My father, Michael Hopkins, would visit "Old man Kearney" in Brooklyn NY when I was a child in the early 1950's. I know his first name was Patrick but that all I know. I had asked my oldest cousin before she died in 2005 how Patrick Kearney was related to the family but she was unable to shed any light on the issue. I do know that my great grandmother's maiden name was Kearney and she married my great grandfather, Farrell Hopkins, in the late 1840's in Crimlin Chapel in Turlough CP which is near Castlebar in County Mayo. I don't have my desktop computer today so I can't check to see if I have anything else on the Kearney family. I hadn't really pursued that name since the church records only begin in 1847. There was a Anthony Kearney on Crumlin (Crimlin) townland on the Griffith land records in 1857. Nora Hopkins FitzGerald In a message dated 10/14/2007 3:01:50 A.M.
