    1. [MAYO] Ballina cemeteries,
    2. Ray & Jamie Gavan
    3. Would anyone know if the any of the many cemeteries around Ballina have been transcribed, and also many people may not know that the huge old Kilmeena cemetery near Newport and the resting place for locals and Islanders has been transcribed and the information is available to members of Cathair Na Mart (Westport) society at Quay Street Westport, they will do look ups for members I am not sure of the joining charges now,but they are local volunteers who have an interest in genealogy and are very helpful, the cemetery itself is terrible ,overgrown and dangerous to walk in. I hope this helps someone and if any of you very knowledgeable people out there know of transcriptions for the Ballina and Carrow Beg areas I would be very grateful Ray Gavan. Sydney

    3. Us 'locals' pronounce Pontoon the same way that everyone else does, also it is not a townland name and probably wouldn't have been in use in the 1840's and 1850's There are Cloverhills in Counties Cavan,Clare,Leitrim, Donegal and Sligo ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2001 5:23 PM Subject: Re: [MAYO] Place called Pantin > I like the suggestion that this might be Pontoon. I was at a B&B only a few miles from there (across the water from Mary Robinson's hideaway) last September, but don't recall the name being mentioned. I think if it had been an unexpected pronunciation, I might have recalled it. In any case, the local pronunciation of the word could, in fact, be quite close to "Pantin". Does anyone out there know? 3. To the Mayo gang: a.. Is there an "Old BALLYHEAN[e] Cemetery" in the TURLOUGH/KILDCOMMOGE area? And does it service the Towlands of BALLINVOASH, KEELKILL? a.. Also looking for cemetery records for the townlands of BALLYSHANE, BARNEY & CREGGANAVAR. While being very close geographically...they may well be in multiple parish/ecclesiastical jurisdictions. [ i.e. BREAFFY/AGLISH/KELLOGUES/TURLOUGH]. a.. I'm searching STAN[U]TONs/CORLEYs/HORANs in this area and especially the relationship of the various STAUNTON tenants, per Griffith: Christopher, Patrick, Michael, Martin, Edward, John, Catherine. There is a MARTIN STANTON/ANNE IRWIN w/son MARTIN born 1/1856 @ BALLYHEAN There is MICHAEL CORLEY married to a MARY HESTON on 1/15/1858 @ BALLYHEAN a.. Still looking for the CATHERINE STAUNTON who married a JOHN MULLINS in 1865 in [AGLISH...KILKENNY/ BREAFFY].They had many children and she is said to have "died in KILMAINE" [Kilmainemore?] on 8/15/1935. Children were Mary Ellen, Patrick, Thomas, Michael, Martin, William, Ellen and John "all born in the Castlebar area". If this large Mullins family wants USA STA[u]NTON info...I have it. I am pretty much discounting alternate spellings. But it is possible I guess that MULLINS and MULLEN could have been used interchangeably. According to Griffith: I'm not finding MULLINS in the anticipated area[s]. However, there is this... @ KILDCOMMOGE/CORRAUN...JOHN,MARTIN & THOMAS MULLEN @ KILMAINEMORE/CARTON [KIWAN]...KATE MULLEN @ KILMAINEMORE/BALLYCUSHEEN...MICHAEL MULLEN Anyone who is doing related research or has some data or possible leads is encouraged to pass it along! Peace, y'all. Walt Kahnle in Atlanta

    3. I looked for Pantin in the Ireland Townland data base with no success. The guess that someone made about Pontoon sounds reasonable. However let me relate my experience. Family records and church baptismal records gave addresses for some of my ancestors as Altinea, Bohola, Co Mayo. All of my searchs could not find Altinea in any official listiing. I also found that Bohola was a village, a townland and a parish, obviously a plot to confuse English tax assessors (and me). But no mention of Altinea. I began to think the name was lost inthe mists of Irish history. After many months of searching a fellow amatuer geneologist who has interests in the same geographical area sent me a real estate ad for a house for sale in Altinea last summer. This spurred me to further inquiries including some conversations with "locals" who told me that Altinea was a sub area of Toocananagh Townland that is now called Toughnane. So keep on searching it may be there somewhere. Do you have any other elements of the address such as parish, barony or poor law union?
