    3. RE: Civil Registration of Ireland births and marriages in the South from 1864-1878, records held in Belfast. 1) What information does Belfast need to know to provide birth and marriage certificates? Is first name, surname, month, year, and parents' names enough (from 1900 US Census)? Or must one have the civil parish as well? 2) Is this Belfast record office called PRONI? Do you by chance have the address or a URL to a web site? Many thanks! 3. Hello list, I'm looking for ifo on Meelish, Co. Mayo. I believe that it is near Hollymount (SW of Claremorris), but I can't find it on the 1905 map that I have. My Grandfather, Michael Tierney, has it as his home on the Manifest sheet. (BTW: www.ellisislandrecords.org is easier to access now, and it's free). Any Info on Collierstown, Co. Westmeath, would also be appreciated. Researching: Tierneys from Hollymount, Co. Mayo, Higgins from Ballymore, Co. Westmeath (and possibly Argentina!), and Ropers from Wedmore/Cheddar/South Brent, Somerset, England. Paul Roper, NYC

    3. Registration of non-Catholic marriages began in 1845 in Ireland. Registration of births, marriages and deaths, regardless of religion, began January 1, 1864 so you can use this resource. Certificates for births, marriages and deaths for all of Ireland until 1922 and for the Republic since 1922 are housed in Dublin. Belfast has the records for Northern Ireland from 1922 to present in addition to the all Ireland records from 1864-1922. Civil registration of births, deaths and marriages in Ireland names the townland that is the address in rural Ireland. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mormons, has copies of almost all of the General Register Office indices and some registers, making direct access to both registers and indices possible through the local Family History Centers. You can do-it-yourself at the local Family History Centers because the FHL has acquired Irish civil registration records. 1. [MAYO] William Phelps Mayo-Emma West Mayo
    2. rl mayo
    3. Hi ! Saw the list and joined today, in hopes someone can help with the "brick-wall" of my G-g'father: William Phelps MAYO from Platte County Mo. (b.1870) m. Emma WEST Mayo from Ellis County Tx (b.1880) both buried in Tx., had son Lawrence H. Mayo (b.1899) in Collin County Tx. m. Gretchen FITZHUGH (b.1904) from Hood County Tx. where both are buried. Gretchen's family was connected back to Stewart County Tenn. and arrived in Dorchester County MD. in the 1680s. Emma WEST Mayo's parents (George and Sarah/Rachel WEST) came from Tenn. and are both buried in Texas also, but I cannot find out who the parents of William Phelps MAYO were, who his siblings might have been, or where they or his parents are buried. Family legend says they were acquainted with the family of Jesse James in Mo., but no way to tell for sure. ANY info very much appreciated, Bob :) ___________________________________________________ GO.com Mail Get Your Free, Private E-mail at http://mail.go.com

    1. [MAYO] Interesting CD-Rom
    2. >From Patrick Sullivan: There is an interesting CD-Rom mentioned in the July-August 2001 issue of Ireland of the Welcomes. The William Smith O'Brien Petition of 1848-49 was signed by over 80,000 Irish people. The CD-Rom is a comprehensive database, detailing names, addresses, and occupations of all who signed the petition. William Smith O'Brien was sentenced to death following the failure of the 1848 rising. This petition was collected to gain clemency and as a result his sentence was commuted and he was transported to Australia for life. Large public meeting were held around the country during the winter of 1848-49, at which 166 different petitions were signed and collected. Details and images of these petitions from Ireland are featured on the CD-Rom, and some 10,000 names from England, particularly Manchester and Liverpool are also recorded. Cost is: US $39.95, Ire 36.00, Euro 46.09 Available from Brian Donovan at Eneclann Ltd. 2. Nora at [email protected] writes: << My Castlebar cousins called it Pon (as in pond) toon (tune) as did my father who was born outside of Castlebar in 1903. Has anyone else heard it pronounced differently? >> Nora, I had a letter from someone in Castlebar who pronounces it "Puntoon" - a bit different, but still not too close to "Pantin". I think the mysterious "normayo" may be right about there being no Pontoon in 1851. It's certainly not in the townlands listing (from 1851, also), but I do have a very long list of townlands that did exist at that time.........and were missed by the listing's compilers. By the way, if you try a google search, you get a lot of interesting websites - but none of them seem to apply to the elusive Pantin, Co. Mayo.
