Can anyone tell me the Irish origins of the name "Maurice"? I have several male ancestors named Maurice and can't quite figure it out... Thank you Barb
ULICK, according to Ronan Coghlan et al. in Book of Irish Names, is a diminutive for Uiliam, Irish for William. It may be a form of Norwegian Hugleik. Uilleac and Uillioc are variants. Ulick (Uileog in Gaelic) is a diminutive of William. My source says "...it was the most common name among the early Anglo-Norman settlers in Ireland. It owed its popularity to William the Conqueror." If you are researching Irish ancestors thought to be living in UK in 1901, then the following information will be useful to you. Census will be online 2002. Index can be searched without charge, but there will be a charge for viewing the census entry. Full details on website address below. Please note that the 1891 pilot mentioned is only for the County of Norfolk. It is useful for locating strays in Norfolk, but the county is not known for large concentrations of Irish immigrants, unlike the north of England, West of England, London and industrial cities. However, anyone also researching English ancestors from Norfolk (including strays from other parts of East Anglia) may find the 1891 useful. The site is similar to Scots Origins sites. There were hundreds of thousands of Irish born immigrants living in England in 1851. There is a 2% sample of this census available online, and the "strays" not living in their place of birth have been separated and indexed for most English counties, with Irish and Scottish strays listed separately. If you go to the following website, and search for surname, you get the estimated date of birth, place of birth. Unfortunately, most entries were merely recorded as Ireland, some gave the county as well, but a few give the town also. It is worth a look, but remember that it is only a tiny fraction of those living in England at that time. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/sheila.jones/ire.m.htm
Dear List Owner, Need some help. I've tried to unsubscribe but received a message that I'm not on the list, but I am still receiving email from the list. I have a new email address and need to disconnect this current server but want to make certain all the lists I belong to are no longer sending me email to the old email address. I am already receiving email at my new email address. I've sent in a couple of email, but evidently there is a computer kliche so I am hoping by emailing the list directly you might be able to assist me. I knew the name of the ship, the date it left Ireland, the date it arrived at Ellis Island, and the name of the passenger (my G. Grandfather) his approximate (+/- 1yr) it still took me about 6 hours to find him on Ellis Island's web site. It seems that someone deciphered a capital letter N as a letter h (It does look like a h on the original manifest), But I haven't heard of too many Mchally's (this is despite the fact that one of the columns very clearly states his final destination is his wife Mary McNally. When I contacted them with this error I was told the following.... " If you find, or have found what you believe to be a database error and wish to notify the Foundation, please contact us at [email protected] and please delineate on the subject line of your e-mail what type of error you encountered. Choose from the following subjects;" o Manifest error o Spelling error o Ship Image error o Other Database error "There is no date for correcting the database errors and you will not receive a response to an error e-mails." "The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc." The ship's manifest also said he was married (which he was) and the typed manifest listed him as single! Keep on looking!
