    1. Re: [MAYO] Parish records
    2. Ellen Naliboff
    3. The National Library of Ireland microfilmed the records from the earliest dates up to 1880. The Mormons purchased those microfilm and in some few cases microfilmed records to a later date. The tip off is that the NLI records start with 929XXX and the later filming is 129XXXX. I have posted the holdings of the FHLC several places on the web. Mayo is well covered as the missionaries spent some time there. Ellen Sue Martinson wrote: > I think I must be missing something here. 3. These searches allow you to locate any townland, parish or village in each of Ireland's thirty two counties. The southern most tip of Lough Corrib is in Tuam diocese. The line runs through the lake! http://www.seanruad.com/ Mapquest.com can get to the parish but not the townland. http://wwwrd.0mm.com/map019002 Ellen [email protected] wrote: >My ancestors, WHELAN, MULKERRIN, KYNE, come from in or near Lough Corrib. >Would that be in the Diocese of TUAM? > >Thank you, >Theresa >[email protected] > > >============================== >Ancestry.com Genealogical Databases >http://www.ancestry.com/rd/rwlist2.asp >Search over 2500 databases with one easy query! > >

    1. [MAYO] 1881 UK CENSUS LOOK UPS OFFER
    2. Mary George
    3. Irish emigrants to UK: I have managed to do lookups for dozens of listers, and happily have been lucky to pinpoint some families exactly, adding new data to listers' research. However, there has been less success where information given was very thin, and the number of "hits" ran into thousands for common Irish names. I hope that I have replied to everyone, but if you are still waiting, please could you contact me again - although I sent replies explaining difficulties to some people and asked for extra information, I did not get a reply so don't know whether or not they want a more detailed look up. There have been up to 5000 results for some of the common names requested, which prevents detailed research. If you ask for Michael Murphy for example, with no other information, then all I can do is tell you how many hundreds of them were living in England Scotland and Wales in 1881. Please remember that I cannot to blanket searches for a surname, unless it is unusual (and most Irish names are not). Where the name is very unusual, I will send details of all instances as they are highly likely to be related. I need FIRST NAMES, approximate YEAR OF BIRTH, and if possible, LIKELY REGION OF UK RESIDENCE in 1881 if it is a common name. If the details of spouses or children are available, give these too, as this will probably narrow the research down to the exact family immediately. You also need to bear in mind that seasonal workers may not have been in UK in Spring 1881 at time of census, and many immigrants managed to avoid being recorded at all. In Liverpool alone, 20% of the population were Irish born even as far back as 1851, and this did not include their children born in UK. In parts of Scotland, the figure was almost as high. Just because emigrants who went on to US embarked from Liverpool, does not necessarily mean that they lived there. As I go back to work next week, I can only accept requests for a couple more days. 3. Transcriptions for Diocese of Tuam 1820-29 by Murphy and Reilly are available on Ancestry.com by paid subscription only. It costs $19.95 for 3 months, which I cancelled after one month of searching the database. I did find several use entries of my ancestors. I don't usually like to use commercial geneology sites, but this was useful. Happy Searching, Karen J. -----Original Message----- From: Ellen Naliboff [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, July 28, 2001 3:22 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MAYO] ? for Ellen Achill RC records for 1867-1913 FHLC#1279259 Tuam diocese Murphy and Reilly transcribed the marriage records for Tuam Diocese for 1820-1829 and Heritage Books published the book. So, I guess the answer is "No". The National Library of Ireland microfilmed the RC records from the earliest dates until 1880. The Mormon missionaries redid some of the parish records (the clue is that the FHLC# is 1279xxx) from the earliest extant to a later date. The parish priests told me that they do not have earlier sacramental registers than for the dates filmed. Nothing dramatic. . .the books are just lost. Joe Egan told me that a book has been found recently so there is always hope. 1. [MAYO] MAYO Carey's of early 1800's
    2. Fellow Mayo List Members: Just "finally" learned the names of my Great Great Grandparents on my Mayo Carey branch of the family tree. The problem is I still don't have a town or area in Mayo, but I've increased the triangulation from just my GGrandfathers name to that of being combined with his parents. His name was William Carey, and his parents were John and Catherine Carey---- don't have Catherine's maiden name yet. Also, William left Mayo in 1829 for Canada, along with fiance' Margaret Kilroy, so presume my search now is for an area in Mayo which had a Catholic Parish with both Careys & Kilroys where a John & Catherine Carey had a son named William, and the Kilroys had a daughter named Margaret [mothers name was Ann--- don't know what fathers name was, but William & Margaret's 2nd son was named Robert, in case they followed the Irish naming pattern---- which they didn't with their first son, Patrick--- since under the Irish naming pattern, I understand it should have been John]. Anyway, appreciate any suggestions anyone has re: where I should focus my research in order to find a parish or town or townland they were from, keeping in mind that there were many Catholic Churches in Mayo in the early 1800's when John & Catherine were married and when William would have been baptized. Also, William & Margaret waited until they got to Quebec, Canada before they got married, so searching for their marriage records in Ireland is not an option. Appreciate any and all advice and suggestions. I'm at a dead end and need some new thinking to refocus "where to go". With all good wishes, Jim Carey Washington, DC

    3. John, Thank you for scanning the Marquis of Sligo Rent Roll. I saved the scans and imported them into Microsoft Photoeditor from which I was able to make some excellent prints. I was hoping to see a CULKIN but no luck. If the family is there they probably come under the term 'Villagers'. I imagine someone collected the village rent and then passed it to the Marquis. Is anyone else researching CULKIN. Mine moved to Sunderland, England about 1850. Raymond

    3. I have no knowledge about AOL, but the page has thumbnail pictures that you click to bring up the big picture behind it. That big picture should be viewable using your browser, or you can save the graphic to your hard drive so you can save it and view it "offline". I made the files somewhat large to make their legibility better. It works fine for me under both Netscape 4.78, and 6.1 and Internet Explorer 5.5. I find the freeware viewer "irfanview" works well and is available at www.irfanview.com I obtained the copy I scanned from a friend who was recently in Ireland. Obviously, they are related to Mayo, since I posted about them in a Mayo list. I also wish more were available, hence my original question about any similar items being available for George Moore, of Moore Hall, where many of my ancesters were renters.
