Fellow Mayo Listers: Perhaps this Labor Day weekend is the time to re-list the names of my MAYO ancestors and see if anyone has any information on them. My Great Grandfather William Carey b. 1809/10, son of John & Catherine Carey of Mayo [don't have townland nor Catherine's maiden name, but know they were Roman Catholic] and Great Grandmother, Margaret KILROY b. 1806, daughter of Ann KILROY [don't have her fathers name nor her townland in MAYO, but know she and Ann were born in County Cavan]---- left in 1829 for Quebec, Canada where they were married later that year, presumably in a Catholic Church. The marriage information comes from a bio on one of Williams sons in Wisconsin who became a very successful cranberry grower. In May of 1830, William & Margaret Kilroy Carey left Canada for Albany County, NY where they settled in Coeymans, NY, about 15 miles south of the city of Albany. There their children were born: Patrick b. 1833, Robert J. b. 1835, Richard b. 1841, James Joseph b. 1844, and Ann or Anna, b. 1847. By 1850, I find them still there on the 1850 federal census for Coeymans. Margaret's mother Ann is with them at age 70, meaning she was born in 1780 in County Cavan. In 1852, they leave NY for Aurora [later renamed Auroraville], Waushara County, WI where they home stead on some marshy land between Aurora & Berlin. Apparently the trip was very hard on Ann, as she dies and is buried some 20 miles away at the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Ripon, Fond du Lac County, WI. Margaret dies in 1867 and is buried at her side. William remarries in 1872 and lives till 1892 on the same homestead. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Berlin, Green Lake County, WI. James & Richard carry on the cranberry business. James is my grandfather. Appreciate any information on any of these mysterious ancestors, particularly any information re: their family in Mayo. I'm presuming of all the Carey families in Northwest Mayo, the triangulation of William b. 1809 being the son of John & Catherine Carey helps narrow the location of townland and family in Mayo much easier to focus. Further information on my entire family is available at my family history database on the internet, searchable by surname, at the following URL: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=james_carey Thanks for any leads anyone can provide. With all good wishes for an enjoyable Labor Day weekend, Jim Carey Great Grandson of William Carey & Margaret Kilroy Washington, DC
My research on McNicholas family roots has identified connections to the following Mayo families: Byrne, Jordan, Lavelle, Kilgallen, Lyons, Murtagh, O'Horo, Roach, Sherlock and McGuire. I would be interested in talking with any one who has parallel interests. My time frame is 1750 to 1900. My geographic focus is the parish of Bohola in the Poor Law Union of Swinford with some dispersion to adjacent areas. John P. McNicholas Vienna, Virginia
Martin Mulderrig married Ann McNicholas and lived in Brooklyn. Their son lives in Brooklyn. It's been awhile since I've posted the families I'm trying to trace: Michael Hastings/Hestin/Heston married Bridget Stewart/Stuart, I believe Sept 8, 1826, Westport RC, County Mayo (Daniel Hestin and Anne Lydon were the witnesses) I say "believe" in that it is a marriage that has been identified that seems to fit. No records exist on any of the children's baptisms to help any further. The family left right about the time of the famine and show up in Liverpool for one daughter's birth. The family was in the U.S. by 1855, the women arriving in New Orleans, with the family reuniting in Lafayette County, Missouri by 1860. Also, just recently I noticed a list of people that the authorities were going to "deal with". One name that caught my eye was Thomas Hastings who was suspected of being a Fenian in Westport. So maybe some of the Hastings stayed around the area and might tie back into mine at some point. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with similar researches.
Fiona- Two items for you: 1. The entry I sent you 3 Aug re: Lizzie Shiel was taken from the Birth Index for Ireland LDS film 0101063. The film numbers for earlier years are: 1886-87 0101061 ` 1888 0101062 They may be ordered from the Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints-LDS) Family History Centers. My notes only include entries for the Swinford area and do not have any which match "Lizzie's" sisters. 2. An Irish Shiel cousin is married to a Joseph Morrisroe and is researching his family. They live in the Swinford area of Mayo. I have some notes on Morrisroes which I am accumulating for this cousin. If interested I will share these entries from Irish indexes with you. They are nearly all from these areas: Swinford, Boyle, Castlereagh. Connaught Journal Galway, Ireland Monday, Feb 17, 1823 Volume 69 Price 5 Pence By the will of the late William Richard BINGHAM, Esq., who has lately died at an advanced age, the children of his brother Henry, become possessed of his desirable property, consisting of forty-two thousand pounds, together with the produce of the sale of several ships and his estate. This property devolves on Miss BINGHAM, Messrs. Matthew, George and Doctor BINGHAM, Royal Artillery.-It is with sincere pleasure we find that this compartively unprovided for branch of that ancient family of Castlebar succeeds to this property, which is left in equal shares to each.--Freeman's Journal.

Folks, I'll be gone for the month of September and, to prevent mailbox overload before my return, I'm unsubbing - in a couple of days - from all of my Irish county lists (33 of them), plus a few more, for the duration. If anyone wants to reach me personally, my own e-mail mailbox will always be open......but you won't get a reply until October. My local LDS Family History Centre is about 5-10 mins drive away (if I were keen, I could walk) - and there are others in Adelaide just a tad further away! And all are open 4 or 5 days a week for several hours each day!! Sure, it can take a while for the film to come in - but then I can spend many hours on it if I wish. And the volunteers are amazingly helpful. It's strange that sometimes, the further away one is, the easier it is to do family research!! ----- Original Message ----- From: Sue Martinson < Why are people writing > to parish prests in Ireland asking for family information if the Mormons > have filmed all the records ? > Not everyone lives within easy reach of a Morman Research centre to be able to see the films, which usually have to be ordered in by that centre, so that you can wait for weeks for it to be available. You also have to have a lot of spare time as opening times for centres are often limited (some only once a week, or only afternoons) and it can take days to go through the films transcribing them. If I visit a centre, I have 7 hours travelling for 2 hours research, and might find nothing in the time I have. I've also spent hours ploughing through films in Dublin without success, and still haven't found the parish of the family of a Dublin ancester yet. A full time job doesn't leave much time for these research trips. Sometimes you need to contact the church to verify something you find, which is difficult to read, or if you need a copy of the baptism or marriage certificate for a particular purpose. However, I agree that people should not be bothering overburdened parish priests, if they can get to a LDS Research Centre. Another alternative is to use the fee paying service of the South Mayo and North Mayo Research Centres if people do not wish to, or do not have time to do the grinding work of personal research themselves. Some priests automatically direct enquirers to the county research centres, sending them leaflets. Mary
I think I must be missing something here. Why are people writing to parish prests in Ireland asking for family information if the Mormons have filmed all the records ? Sue
