    3. Don't get your hopes up. They actually look up only a small percentage of requests. And millions of names are not on the commercial CDs, even though those ancestors actually were alive at that very time and place. 3. Dear Jim, You have information that sounds very interesting. KILFIAN. That is the Parish that my Murphys, Kellys and Burkes came from, to settle in Quebec in 1830. Could you tell me what is on the burial register and the dates that it covers? Where did you find such a wonderful document? I look forward to hearing from you... 3. Ellen, I came across a burial register for the townland of Kilfian. It is the first I have seen. Is this an uncommon event? Does the LDS have any films on burial registers? Anything new on the 1911 census for Mayo? The Heritage Centre does not have it as of yet. Other than the index, what else is available on film? Thanks. Jim Kelly

    3. Graham, My interests are SHIEL/GALLAGHER in the parishes of Meelick/Kilconduff not Turlough. However, my notes do include several FOY(E)s who married GALLAGHERS. Most of the parish records begin after 1820 or so and, according to one source, Turlough parish R.C. begins 1847. Those of the C.of I. begin 1821. If you would like the 10 or so entries I have let me know. they are in a spreadsheet, Excel97 and would be an attachment. If you can live with loss of format, I could send them as text within the email. 3. Hi all, I have been searching unsuccessfully for my grandmother's birth cert/or family details for years. I have her marriage cert year 1894 (married in Derby England) which shows father as WILLIAM SAMUEL RILEY, a grocer, but I don't know if he was in England or not. I can't find her on the 1891 Derby census. Her name is given as CATHERINE AGNES MARY RILEY, age 24 in 1894. Family say she was born in Ballyhaunis, Mayo. I have checked the parish records but no joy-some possibly relevant years are missing and many pages are impossible to read completely. I have checked Registration of births for years 1867 to 1871 and sent for all Catherine/Kate Riley, Reilly and any other spelling for district of Claremorris, but still no luck. Can anyone suggest my next step? I now can only get to the LDS FHC once a month at most (I rely on transport from a friend), so I am getting desperate. I had planned to visit Mayo for next year's family holiday, but I really want to find some proof of her place of birth first. I would be very greatful of any help or suggestions. TIA, MAry

    3. National Archives staff in Washington. DC, will search the immigration passenger lists up to 1954 if there is an index (New York is not indexed 1847-1897) and if an inquirer can give the full names and ages of the passenger and of accompanying passengers, the port of entry, the vessel, and exact date of arrival. Requests for searches by the staff at National Archives and Records Administration should be made on "Order for Copies of Ship Passenger Arrival Records". You can obtain the form by providing your name and mailing address [email protected] Be sure to specify the number of forms you need. The fee is $17.50, payable only if the requested records are found. If the record cannot be found, no payment is required. Or, You can do-it-yourself at the local Family History Centers because the FHL has acquired 99% of National Archives passenger records. There are Family History Centers scattered throughout the world, located in the LDS meeting-houses. The FHCs are generally listed in the local phonebook under Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with its own phone number. Or, go to familysearch.org. In some communities, Family Search is in the local public library. No charge is made for using the resources at the local FHC except for a rental fee for microfilm from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Information on the passenger lists indexes for New York, New Orleans, Philadelphia & Baltimore, including microfilm indexes (with FHL & NARA numbers), and books like Germans to America, can be found here... 3. Connaught Journal Galway, Ireland Thursday, April 3,1823 Volume 69 Price 5 Pence CASTLEBAR ASSIZES March 31,- On Friday evening the Assizes terminated-The following convictions took place. Andrew BARRETT, for stealing a cow, recommended by the Grand Jury to be transported for seven years. William FLYNN, for similar offence, same sentence. William STAUNTON, manslaughter, to be imprisoned 12 months. Pat DURKEN, rape on the body of Bridget MULROONEY, to be handed on the 12th May. Thomas CASHELL, for stealing a mare, to be hanged on the 12th May. John ADAIR, for robbing the Mail, to be hanged on the 12th May. Neal M'MAHON, for having in his possession a forged Note, purporting to be of the Bank of Ireland, for 1l 10s, to be imprisoned for 14 years. Pat MORAN, James MORAN, and Thomas MAXWELL, for coining and counterfeiting six shilling tokens of the Bank of Ireland, to be each transported for seven years. John HOPKINS, for administering unlawful oaths, to be transported for life. Pat LEA, for stealing two sheep, to be transported for seven years. John GRADY for stealing a sheep, the same sentence. Mathew KIRBY, for stealing a lamb, the same sentence. William KNEAVIN and Pat GOODWIN, for stealing three sheep, same sentence. Mary MAHON, for stealing wearing apparel and twenty bank tokens at 10d each, to be imprisoned six months. Bridget DUGAN, for stealing tobacco, to be imprisoned twelve months. Pat FLANAGAN, for stealing twenty-four Irish Bank tokens, recommended to be imprisoned three months. John SULLIVAN, stealing wearing apparel, to be imprisoned twelve months. Hugh WOODS, for steal leather, to be imprisoned one month. The whole of Thursday, or nearly so, was occupied by the Grand Jury in an investigation of a claim by Mr. FAIR, of the Heath and his son Mr. R. FAIR, of Fortville, both in this County, for compensation to the amount of about 500l, for property belonging to them, stated to have been maliciously consumed by night, in the month of January last. The Jury, however, decided against the claim. About 200 bills of indictment were sent up to the Grand Jury, against persons charged with offences against the revenue, in the manufacture and sale of illicit spirits. Mr. Leslie FOSTER, and Mr. PENTLAND, the Solicitors of the Excise, attended on the part of the Crown. The Grand Jury, however, ignored the whole of the bills, and thereby saved those Gentlemen the trouble of prosecuting, saved the country the expense of such a multitude of trials, (which might have amounted, in fees, of officers, support of prisoners, &c. to little short of 1000l) and saved the public also the unseemly exhibition of such trials, so little accordant with the customary and dignified forms and practices of our Law Courts- a description of trials, not merely valueless in the way of example or correction, but calculated, we greatly fear, to remove those solemn impressions which the administration of justice in all its other departments in this country is so eminently adapted to produce.

    2. Hi Gail, Just wanted to mention that the Ruane name is also found in the Foxford area of Mayo. When I was there this summer, I actually met a Vincent Ruane who had purchased the property which was once owned by my ancestors. He said that his family had lived on the other side of the main road. In the census of 1901, there is a John Ruane in Belgarrow, a Mary and Patrick in Cloonmung, and a Mary,Julia, Anne,Garrett, William, Martin, Michael,Catherine,Sabina, another William, Bridget,James, Mary, Edward, and another James in Rinnanany. I hope this helps you or maybe someone else on the list looking for this family name. Good luck, Vicky
