    1. [MAYO] DNA - Y Chromosome
    2. Hi, Thought RADM Carey might be interested in this study on Y chromosomes, of course it dosen't help the Ladies. "March 22, 2000 - Irish geneticists have used surnames and the male Y chromosome to reconstruct a 1,000-year-old genetic map of Ireland that shows the Irish really are a race apart. - DANIEL BRADLEY study author "WHEN YOU look at this old genetic geography of Ireland what you find is that in the West (of the country) we are almost exclusively of one type of Y chromosome," Daniel Bradley said Wednesday. The Y chromosome is passed down exclusively from father to son. It is a favorite of geneticists because it accentuates differences between populations. "It is inherited as a unit so the information you get from it is of a special type," Bradley said. Bradley and his colleagues at Trinity College in Dublin examined the Y chromosomes of men with Gaelic surnames in the western-most province of Connaught, and found that 98.3 percent had a group of genes on the Y chromosome known as haplogroup 1. "When you look at Gaelic surnames they are different in frequency of Y chromosome types from non-Gaelic surnames," Bradley said. In a report in the science journal Nature, he and his colleagues said that even within Ireland they found differences. More than 98 percent of men with Gaelic names in western Ireland had haplogroup 1 but numbers dropped drastically on the east of the Emerald Isle. Much further east in Turkey only 1.8 percent of men carry haplogroup 1. "Ireland may tell us something about European diversity because it is on the edge of Europe. Genetic diversity follows geography to some extent," Bradley said. The researchers said there is a gradient of haplogroup 1 across Europe starting at almost zero in the Far East to almost 100 percent in the west of Ireland. One of the most likely explanations for this is that farming, which was invented about 10,000 years ago in the near East and caused a fundamental revolution in the way humans lived, spread over across Europe with time but only arrived in western Ireland about 6,000 years ago. "Ireland has been relatively untouched by this and the other great demographic movements because of its location. That gives us the ability to look at the west and surnames and to get a snapshot of what early European genetics may have been like," Bradley said. Note: According to a New York Times article on 23 March, this discovery also shows that these Irish came from pre-Ice Age Spain. That fact matches with the legendary introduction of the Melisian Celt into Ireland by Queen Scotia and her children from Spain in the last millenium BC."

    3. Hi all, I am pleased to hear that the PRO has extended the time limit on sessions for the 1901 census and have also said that we won't be charged for not using it i.e. not viewing records within the time limit. As every veteran knows there was always going to be the inevitable breakdowns and slow response of the server (remember how hard it was to get anything off the ((IGI Family search)) when it first started?) We also won't have to forget either that the PRO is a government department and as such will be in the fight for funding each year so the is the possibility of servers being updated slowly and wrapped in red tape. However for me personally who has to travel 25 miles to the nearest county records office and a lot of the time come home empty handed and the cost of which is around £7.00 the prices seem fair (but not a bargain by any means) I would imagine there will be people that will struggle though EG Pensioners etc and I would encourage the PRO to think again in there behalf. I was on the site yesterday and found answers to a lot of brick wall questions without even viewing anything other than the free stuff Eg I found my grandmother's birth which I just could not find before though I had all her siblings and her baptism all in one town she was born in another. I had also wondered if my G Grandparent were the ones in town 2 and finding her birth confirmed this so you can find a lot of answers without spending a penny. I do look forward to seeing how the service develops and using it and hope it is not going to be a rip off in any way though I do think we need to keep a careful eye on it in the future. God bless you all & Happy new year. Kind regards Terry WEBSITE http://nav.to/teljul RESEARCHING (O'Connor, Connor, Lydon.Ludden,Louden, )Mayo Ireland & Cheshire, Cumberland & Durham England. I apologise if you see it several times. I have just spoken to the PRO census help desk (01684 585299). The site is inaccessible currently, due to a server problem (no news there). Session times have been extended to 96 hours. If paying by credit card and you have viewed no records after the 96 hours you will NOT be charged anything. HOWEVER, if you have viewed even one record you will be charged the £5 minimum charge. The advice was to either: a) keep trying within your 96 hour period or b) WAIT! Once the site settles down you should be able to use it *normally*. If you chose option a) and see any records then the £5 will be charged, so the risk is yours, but the help desk official said he'd wait rather than giving his credit card number. It would be nice, if those of us that have not yet spent anything, hung back, and when the site returns we let those who have spent something but not their full £5 get on and at least use up some more of that £5, but I doubt that this will happen. The press have now reported the release of the census on line so I can only imagine things will get worse before they get better. I hope this information is of help to some. Specifically, from County Mayo, we have Mary Dugan, born March 17, 1853 in Ballaghaderreen and who emigrated to the USA through New York City circa 1871. She married Patrick King (of Cavan County) in New York in 1880. The only other information we have for Mary Dugan is that she had four (4) siblings, including James, Bridget, Kate and Anne. I would be pleased to share information and links. I also have a specific question for the Mayo subscribers. I am just beginning my research into Ballaghaderreen. I have scanned the List's digest and I have identified the LDS microfilms for the Parish of Ballaghaderreen. I will most certainly be investigating this latter source. MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: undisclosed-recipients:; X-Mailer: AOL 5.0 for Windows sub 139 Thought I'd see if anyone on this list would be interested in comparing DNA to see if we're related? Of course to do so means you have to have your DNA run by a lab, but from what I'm seeing via genealogy lists, more and more folks are doing it, and it can help to indicate the probability of common ancestors from hundreds of years ago. Here's what I've learned: 1. Having one's DNA run is relatively expensive [$100/$200 + dollars], but as competition increases, prices are slowly coming down. 2. It's far from an exact science at present, but can indicate probabilities of common ancestors of 100's of years ago [which some will feel is of little value]. 3. While reading the messages on the DNA-oriented lists often leaves me more confused than before [some of the respondents are quite technical], I am slowly beginning to learn at least the generic theories that are helping me to understand when DNA is helpful for genealogy purposes, and what it can't do. [That list is at [email protected] if you're interested] 4. There is a plan in the works to have a genealogy database where one can list their DNA numbers and see if anyone pops up as a likely ancestral link, but it's just now under development---- the web page is currently just the home page only. URL is www.genealogydna.org for anyone interested. As I understand it, the web site owner hopes to have the criteria established for the database and the ability to enter one's DNA numbers within the next month or two. Having said all this, and while I intend to put my data into the database when it's ready, I realize there are many who avoid such efforts, so please understand I'm not advocating anyone do this---- just that it's in the works and will one day be available. Hope this is helpful to some of you, and that one day it helps establish that we are long-lost relatives with a somewhat more recent linkage than Adam & Eve. 2. Mary at [email protected] writes: << Can somebody tell me what Castleconnor is, please? >> Well, Mary, Currently, the townland of Castleconor IS in Co. Mayo. It has a two mile long northern border with Co. Sligo. The confusion arises because the area from Castleconor south - including most, if not all, of the then Kilmoremoy parish, was transferred from Co. Sligo to Co. Mayo in 1898. The seanruad website and the townland listings were prepared 50 years before this, so your 1836 - 1869 records would be from the good-old Sligo days. As an aside, there is a "village" identified on the Discovery map 24 with the name Castleconor carefully placed on the Sligo side of the current border. But the actual townland itself is safely ensconced in Co. Mayo. This sort of cross-border naming occurs occasionally throughout Ireland. As for the person you who told you it was a modem file, please advise him/her to get their money back from whatever 2-bit tech school they attended. As for "flooding your mail", that is exactly what people like you do when passing on these "bits of help". And believe me, I do not need your "help" in any "virus/scam/deletion" notice. I prefer to get my information from the proper *accredited* sources: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ http://dispatch.mcafee.com/default.asp? http://www.avp.ch/ Since you claim to have investigated this, then it is glaringly apparent that your investigative work is seriously flawed. 3. Its too bad that Ireland is getting sucked into this Socialist mess as is the UK This is not just a currency conversion but a surrender of sovereign rights! When a central government dictates (as does Brussels) what you can produce, grow and how you measure under penalty of fine and or imprisonment for violations you have Socialism.
