Dear Friends, Can someone help me locate info on Whitestream, Bonniconlon, Cty. Mayo, in particular, what registration district it is in, civil parish, and catholic parish? Is it called a Placename, a townland, or what? I want to search for relatives on the vital records and I would need some of the above to locate them. I understand it's very close to Ballina and wonder if it is in the Ballina registration district? Thank you very much. Mary L. Casey

We are gratified at the extension over the whole country, of a permanent and well organized system, from which the best results may be expected.-- Constitution On Tuesday last, Mr. Henry Tighe, Postmaster of Rathlacken, in this county, in a fit of derangement, terminated his existence, by cutting his throat with a razor.--Ibid SLIGO, SEPT. 17- On Tuesday, 9th September, the Committee of the Ladies' Association of the Union of St. John, in connection with the British and Irish Ladies' Association for the improvement of the female peasantry of Ireland, held their first regular meeting in the Grand Jury room. The parish was divided into four districts, which were sub-divided into eighteen portions, to each of which a superintendent from the Committee, and visiting Ladies, were appointed. They will also endeavour to recommend to the people the observance of cleanliness in their houses and persons, and gradually lead them to appreciate the advantages resulting from industry and order. Terry and List, Could someone tell me if the three Catholic churches listed below are all in the Portland/Saint John area? I think they may have also been near Meenan [or as some of the oldtimers and locals say it, Meehan] Cove just outside the town of Quispamsis. Anyway, here's what I've got. I have only two SAVAGES for certain, Margaret & Sarah Jane. (1.) Margaret SAVAGE, b.circa 1817, who married James MEEHAN/MEHAN/MEAHAN, b.circa 1816. We believe they were both born in Co. Mayo, Ireland. In the 1871 census he was listed as a millman, and they were living in Lancaster Ward, Div. 1. Their children and baptismal dates: Mary-1 19 DEC 1843 St. Malachy Margaret 27 APR 1845 St.Malachy Mary-2 17 JUL 1847 St. Andrews James 1850 [my ggrandfather, married Catherine MURRAY on 12 OCT 1869] Charles 29 OCT 1854 St.Malachy William 08 FEB 1857 St.Malachy Catherine 24 MAR 1859 St.Malachy John 25 JUL 1863 St. George Margaret died 13 NOV 1887 as a widow in Marble cove, Portland [now Saint John], New Brunswick. She was living with her daughter, Catherine, and her husband, Patrick Quinlan [d. 05 OCT 1927]. She is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery. (2.) Sarah Jane SAVAGE and John BRENNAN are listed in 1854 as John's baptismal sponsors (see above). They were married, and moved west after 1875 with James MEEHAN (above) and Catherine MURRAY. I don't know if the KEARNEYs were already in the Oregon Territory, went with, or came later, but they also lived in Astoria, OR, and had cousins in San Francisco. [the Kearneys were related to the Murray/Toners] Excuse the length! I have all of the above information (10 pages in all!!!) due to the kind help of people on this NB list who gave me my ggrandparents marriage date and directed me to the Catholic Diocesan Archives. Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa March 26, 1924 LATE THOMAS J. GRADY Lived in Ireland and Scotland- Mined in California. Old Resident of Ruthven. (By Our Correspondent) The funeral of Thomas J. Grady, who passed away early Wednesday morning of last week, was held at this place on Saturday. Services were conducted at the Catholic church, Rev. G. Hickey, the pastor, officiating. The Catholic choir of St. Thomas church of Emmetsburg furnished special music for the occasion. There was a large attendance of relatives and old friends and neighbors. The pall bearers were Michael Fleming of Whittemore, E.J. Ruddy of Emmetsburg, Wm. Geelan, Chas. Metz, T.J. Brennan and M.T. Washington of this place. Mr. Grady was born at Westport, Ireland, June 8, 1840. He was rounding out his 84th year. His father died when he was six years old. At an early age he went to Glasgow, Scotland, where he spent some time. When 18 years old he came to the United States and in a short time went to California where he followed gold mining for several years. On December 26, 1869, he was united in marriage to Miss Winifred Kelly of Osceola, Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. Grady soon after their marriage, became residents of Butler county, this state, where they made their home for some time. In 1892 they located on a farm northeast of Ruthven. In 1911, they bought a home in this city subsequently living here. Mr. Grady was an invalid for some time. He is survived by his wife, five sons, and three daughters. They are Leo of Conrad, Montana, Mrs. Matt Steil and James Grady of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mrs. Wm Sammin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Joseph of Graettinger, Miss Margaret of Sioux Falls, William of Estherville and Louis and Thomas of Ruthven. One son John preceded Mr. Grady in death. All of the sons and daughters were present at the funeral except James and Mrs. Sammin, who could not come on account of illness. Mr. Grady was a far-seeing, industrious, substantial farmer. He was upright and he was very much respected by his fellow citizens. He was outspoken and straightforward. Those who did not agree with him always knew where to find him. He was a man of exemplary habits and his friendship was warm and enduring. He was devoted to his home, faithful to his church and kind and courteous in his business dealings. Deserving community enterprises often sought his co-operation and he usually responded as generously as his circumstances would permit. He was a peaceable, reasonable man. He kept out of legal and other difficulties. He always met promptly his just obligations and he kept square with the world. We had reason to appreciate Mr. Grady's friendship and good will from the day we first made his acquaintance and we respected him for his sincerity and his candor. We learn with sorrow of his death. Our sympathy goes out to the grief-stricken wife, sons, and daughters.
