FYI- I am not related Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, October 10, 1917 He Retired, Said His Prayers and Soon Passed Away Patrick J Kelly, Formerly of Emmetsburg, Laid to Rest at Graettinger on Saturday. Patrick J Kelly, a former resident of Emmetsburg, died at the home of his son, John Kelly of Jamestown, N.D., last Thursday afternoon. he was ill for a week or ten days but later he rallied and was able to be about. A short time before his death he went to bed, folded his hands, said his prayers, and quietly passed away. He did not appear to be ill or to suffer any pain. The remains were brought to Graettinger for burial. The funeral was held at that place at 9 o'clock Saturday forenoon. Services were conducted by Father Kelly. The burial was in St. Jacob's cemetery. The pall bearers were J.J. Mahan, P.J. McCarty, J.P. Conway, M.L. Murphy, P. Bannon and E.J. Bradley. Mr. Kelly was born in the county of Mayo, Ireland, October 15, 1829. Hence he was rounding out his eighty-eighth year. He came to the United States at the age of twenty-one. He was employed in Pennsylvania for three years, after which he moved to Youngstown, Ohio, where he worked for the roller mills. He located in Fayette county, this state, forty-three years ago, where he engaged in farming. In 1891 he moved to this county, buying a quarter section farm near Graettinger. He lived with his son John in this city for a couple of years. A year ago last March he moved to Jamestown with his son. Mr. Kelly was married at Youngstown, Ohio, in 1858. The maiden name of Mrs. Kelly has not been learned. She died at Graettinger in June, 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly were the parents of seven sons and five daughters. Nine are living. The sons are J.J. of Greattinger, Will, Michael and Thomas of Omaha, and John, Patrick and Martin of Jamestown, North Dakota. The daughters are Mrs. J.H. Millea of Emmetsburg, Mrs. Margaret Haley of Fayette county and Mrs. William Kelly of Fort Dodge. A daughter, Miss Anna, was buried in St. John's cemetery of this place eight years ago. Mr. Kelly was not very well known to our local citizens, though he resided in our community for a couple of years. He was a plain, sensible, practical, inoffensive, old gentleman. He lead a clean, edifying life. he made a record as a citizen of which the members of his creditable family may justly feel proud. No one questioned his motives or doubted his loyalty to his modest ideals. He understood well his duties as a Christian and as a member of the community and he was very careful not to neglect them. The several neighborhoods in which he resided are deeply indebted to him for his laudable efforts and the wholesome influence of his helpful example. The several sons and daughters who mourn his death have the sincere sympathy of our numerous citizens. Cathy Joynt Labath The Irish in Iowa http://www.celticcousins.net/irishiniowa/

Connaught Journal Galway, Thursday, September 25, 1823 MAYO- CASTLEBAR, SEPT. 18- Several Clergymen of the County, we understand, have applied, or intend immediately to do so, to have the provisions of the New Tithe Act extended to their respective Parishes. Amongst others, the Rev. G.V. Hart, Rector of this Union. The proposals of the Rev. J. O'Rorke, and Walter James Burke, Esq to the Parishioners of Foxford, and of the latter Gentleman to those of Kilgarven, Attymas, &c. on the subject of their Tithes, have not, we learn, been acceded to, at the meeting which took place at Swineford, for the purpose of entering into a permanent agreement. An instance of extraordinary expedition in putting flax through its various stages of dressing, spinning, and preparing it for the loom, has been communicated to us. A Widow Johnson, who lives near Rathfriland, pulled a certain quantity of Flax in the morning- took it home, and spread it in a large tub, in two layer, reversing the second one from the first. This done, she poured on it a potful of warm water, covered it up and allowed it to remain so for several hours, until properly fermented- she then lifted the flax out of the tub, squeezed the water from it, and spread it out in the sun until dried; and afterwards she beetled and skutched the flax, carded it, and spun a hank of good yarn from it, all in the course of one day! Nor did her industry end here, for in the evening of the same day, she actually sold the hank of yarn to a shopkeeper in Rathfriland--Newry Paper. The five men who were convicted and received sentence of death at the last Assizes of Mullingar, for attacking the house of J. Fitzpatrick, assaulting him and cutting off his ear, and were to be executed on the 22d inst., have received a respite until further orders. Major Washington will shortly leave Dublin to form Constabulary forces in several of the Northern Counties. On Friday last, David Donovan, a boy 10 year old, of Six-mile-bridge, has his leg, thigh, and arm broken by a threshing machine. [email protected] asks; I received a picture from a new found relative Bridget Ward in Sussex, England. On the back of the picture,(which is of a cottage) it has... polinalty,Cloonfad, County mayo,Ireland Sept 29,1872 Ruane family home When I entered cloonfad in the search it bought it up under Roscommon. Does anybody have any ideas or information on that? Gail...There are townlands named Pollanalty (East & West) in the parish of Kiltullagh, Co. Roscommon. The R.C. graveyard is in the town of Cloonfad and though I do not have a detail map of the parish, the largest town in the area seems to be Cloonfad. Also, the town looks to be very close to the Mayo/Roscommon border. Hope this is of some help to you...Jim Kenny. May God Bless You and Keep You J J Kenny
According to a friend who owns a summer house in Moigh, Cloonfad, Cloonfad is the main village or town. It is very small. It is situated on a crossroad with 3 pups (bars), a school, church and shop. It it approximately 5 miles from Ballyhaunis, County Mayo and is also near the boarder of County Galway. My ancestors, the James & Bridget Burke Family, are from Gortamarle, Parke, a small townland of Cloonfad. Cloonfad and the surrounding townlands or villages use Ballyhaunis as thier Post Office address. Hopes this additional information is helpful. Jerry Ballauer, Columbia, SC Researching Burke - Co. This message is for Gail who was asking why an old photo (1868) identified a location in Co Mayo but today it is listed in Roscommon. One explanation could be that c1900 the boundries between Co Mayo and Co Roscommon were redrawn so that certain locations without moving shifted counties. There are probably others on the list who could point you to web sites that would specify where the shifts took place. John McNicholas
Gail, I have Ruane from County Mayo in my lines. Mary Anne Ruane of Addergoole, County Mayo married Anthony Armstrong of Kilmaclasser 18th April 1839, in Crossmolina Church of Ireland. Please let me know if any of this rings a bell. Thank You, John T. Armstrong
Can any one tell me the varients of the surname BYRON? I have seen several varients for it on the LDS IGI microfische, (which, to my knowledge, is not offered on the computer version). I have seen it spelled Berrane, Birrane. But what about BYRNE, or BILBOW? I would also like to know if any of you have seen a family that you are researching go by one name, like Birrane, then see it go to a varient , like BYRNE? I have seen it change with the minor spelling varients such as Birrane to Byron, in Griffiths, etc.,but the more "wild" ones that are not so obvious make me curious as to how often, if at all, this happened. I personally have not seen this, but I am missing some people, and was wondering if I should be looking into other varient spellings, like BYRNE. I hope not, as it would be like looking for Smith or Brown here in the USA. Not fun, especially since I have spent too many hours looking for my husbands Smiths- I really don't want to do that type of research again! Is there a book out there that gives Irish surname varients? My Byrons came from Crossmolina and and Kilfian area., and possibly Moygawnagh. Many of them emmigrated to Syracuse NY in the 1880-1905 time frame. Would be happy to share info with other Berrane researchers. . Pat B m Cath Gill 1859 in Enaghbeg, Crossmolina Parish. Jerry, There is not one Kinney name in Griffiths for County Mayo. Plenty of Kennys, but no Samuel. There are four Mary Kenny names. Two in Castlebar, Turlough, one in Ballinrobe, Shrule. And one in Claremorris, Crossboyne. Good luck, Jim [email protected] wrote: > Could some one look up Samuel and Mary Kinney Co.Mato in Griffiths or > Tithe.Any help appreciated .Thanks Jerry > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237

Mary at [email protected] writes: << Can someone help me locate info on Whitestream, Bonniconlon, Cty. Mayo, in particular, what registration district it is in, civil parish, and catholic parish? >> Mary, Bonniconlon is now officially spelled as Bunnyconnellan, a small town five miles due east of Ballina in Kilgarvan civil parish, probably in Kilgarvin (I don't know why it's spelled differently, either) RC parish and in Ballina PLU (which, I understand, is more or less the same as Registration District). As for Whitestream, I don't find a townland or any other location on any of my maps showing a place by that name in the Bunnyconnellan area. Nothing that would seem to be an Irish source for a translation to Whitestream, either. As far as rivers are concerned, we have Black and Yellow rivers in the general area, but no White. We even have a Black Ditch. If Whitestream is more than 2 or 3 miles from Bunnyconnellan, it could be located in Kilmoremoy civil parish and - perhaps - Attymass RC parish, but still well within the large coverage of Ballina PLU. Looking for info on the Coynes of Westport, County Mayo. I am researching the following families: Patrick Coyne b. 1799 married to Margaret O'Donnell. Emigrated to Cleveland, OH circa 1848. Thomas Coyne b. 1794 married to Margaret Costello. Emigrated to Cleveland, OH circa 1848. I believe these Coynes may have been brothers. Have lots of info from 1850 to date.
