    3. Has anyone come across a biography of Ken Maynard? I think we've all heard that we're related to him if we have a Maynard line. Read somewhere that he was born in Texas, but can't find him in the 1900 census. My Maynard's who are "related" are Floyd b. Croton-on-Hudson, NY - 1827 s/o William Maynard and Elizabeth Schooley Floyd m. Phebe Eliza WILBER (NJ) and had daughters: Harriet "Hattie" b. 1864 m. Theodore WENDELL Emma m. John KIRK Ida Floyd's second marriage produced 2 children (By this time, he was living in West Orange, NJ) Catherine "Kate" Jacob who changed his name to Montgomery Keep me in mind as you do your research. 3. Hey Shirley I have no clue what it might be worth..... But is Ken Maynard one of ours ? Since you and I seem to be barking up the same Maynard tree ? My Pa always teased about us being related to a Movie Star...... but I always thought he was just joking. I've heard of Ken Maynard - but don't know which poster you might be referring to. 3. I hit the jack pot today ! I was lucky enough to recieve this information twice ! Thanks again for all your hard work. I'm not sure , given the date, that my Nancy Maynard , 1806 is the same as the d/o Gibson Sr., born ~1785. I do know that she married a John Scott and had Emaline Levi Vincent 1828 mine and others. 3. Dear Allen You sweet thing ! Thanks for all the time and effort it took to copy all that down to share with the rest of us. I am researching my Maynard's and am stuck at Nancy Maynard, born 1806, she eventually winds up in White County TN for the 1840 & 1850 census. I was following this Gibson Maynard SR, in the hope that his daughter Nancy was MY Nancy Maynard, but seeing as how she is listed in your information as born in 1785 and I am sure that mine is born about 20 years later, it would seem not to be the case. Although she may still be connected to the Gibson Maynard family some where along the line. Does the harsh reality of smacking that brick wall ever loose it's sting ? Ouch ! 2. Below is my interpretation of the family of Gibson Manard Sr. of Wilkes County, North Carolina: 1. Gibson1 Manard Sr., son of Unknown Manard and Unknown Unknown, was born circa 1750. Gibson died after 2 Aug 1800 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, at approximately 50 years of age. He married Sarah Unknown. 1778 State Census for Wilkes County, North Carolina - Gibson Maynard listed. (This is the earliest year that I know of that Gibson Manard Sr. appears in Wilkes County - AHB) 1790 Federal Census for Wilkes County, North Carolina, Morgan District, 6th Company - Gibson Manor, one white male over age 16, 2 white males under age 16, 5 white females of all ages. 1800 Federal Census for Wilkes County, North Carolina, Pg. 54 - Gibson Mainard - 1 male age 45 & over, 1 male age 10-16, 1 female age 45 & over, 2 females age 16-26, 1 female age 10-16, 3 females age under 10. Memorandum of Gibson Maynard's Will, August Term 1802, Wilkes County, North Carolina - From the Original at the North Carolina State Archives (Courtesy of Nancy Maynard Brown of Virginia) Memorandum of the will and desire of Gibson Maynard of his goods and property to his children, August of 2, 1800 --- To Gibson Maynard I leave one Cow and three grass heifers. To Sooky Maynard one bay two year old mare and one Cow and one feather bed & furniture belonging therewith. To Edy Maynard one young bay two year old horse, one Cow and feather bed and furniture therewith. To Larkin Maynard one bay three years old horse my new saddle and bridle one feather bed and furniture and Cow. To Gibson five ewes. To Larkin two ewes. To Sooky one ewe. To Edy one ewe. To my son Drury Maynard as much money save 100 acres of land out of the office now entered. The following of my property to my lawful wife and live on the land where I now live to live thereon her lifetime to raise the four youngest children and to dispose of the property to the four little girls Rhoda, Sally, Nancy and Catey as she sees cause or during widdow hood to enjoy the benefits and profits (?) and my plantations. Signed and Sealed in presence of Thos. Walsh, Henry Laurance and Jacob Lyons Gibson Maynard (Seal) May 1806 - May Term, 1806 Wilkes County Court Records - Petition of Sarah Maynord, widow of Gibson Manard Sr. against the executors of the estate of Gibson Manard Sr. naming her children... the following citation: "leaving children Drury, Gipson, Betsey wife of John Cates, Winnie wife of Henry Laurence, Susanah, Edy wife of Nathaniel Beck, Nancy, Caty, Larkin, Rodah of Sarrah Maynord, the three last of which were commited to the guardianship of Henry Laurence which duty he continues to exercise..." (Obviously Caty, Larkin & Rodah are not of age at this time and therefore are the youngest children. Daughter Sarah is not mentioned and I am presuming she may have been deceased by this time. I know little or nothing about Nancy, Caty, or Rodah. Henry Lawrence, husband of the late Winnie Manard, left Wilkes County, for Georgia between 1825-1830. He and Larkin Manard appear in the 1830 Pike County, Georgia Census and it is possible that one or two of the younger Manard girls may be there also but this is purely speculation on my part. I think more work has to be done in the 1800-1820 time frame in Wilkes County to try and determine which of the children were still there. Gibson Manard Jr. and John Cate & his wife, Elizabeth Manard, are found during this period in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Drury Manard appears I believe on the 1800 Census for Ashe County, North Carolina. Not much is known about Drury after this time. He may be the Drury/Drewry Mainard who appears in the White County, Tennessee deed records of 1811. Edy Manard Beck and family appear in Robertson County, Tennesee as early as 1812. They and their descendants are belived to have later gone to Illinois. Susannah "Sooky" Manard is still a bit of a mystery. There are Wilkes County, NC deed records showing transactions between the executors of the estate of Gibson Manard Sr. and a Susannah Manard/Mainard as early as 1806. This Susannah also sells land to Larkin Manard as late as 1814, proved in Wilkes County, NC Court in 1818. She may have married later. Some want to attribute this Susannah Manard as being the Susannah Manard who marries Isaac Cate in 1807 in Jefferson County, Tennessee… I cannot verify this later assumption. Gibson Manard Jr. and Delilah Cate are my great-great-great-great grandparents. AHB) 1810 Federal Census for Wilkes County, North Carolina, Page 270 - Sally Maynard - 1 male 26-45, 2 females 45 & over, 1 female 26-45. Gibson Manard Sr. and Sarah Unknown had the following children: 2 i. Elizabeth 'Betsey'2 Manard was born in North Carolina circa 1770. Elizabeth died after 1830 in McMinn County, Tennessee. She married John Cate. John was born circa 1766-69, in North Carolina. John was the son of Charles Cate Sr. and Sarah Baldwin. John died after 1830 in McMinn County, Tennessee. 3 ii. Winnie Manard was born in North Carolina circa 1773. Winnie died before 1813 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. She married Henry Hardy Lawrence in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, in 1789. Henry was born 12 Jun 1771, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Henry was the son of Thomas Lawrence and Lucy Womack. He married Lany Visant in Wilkes County, North Carolina, 22 Feb 1813. Henry died 8 Apr 1855 in Chattooga County, Georgia, at 83 years of age. (This marriage citation comes from the Lawrence family researchers. I find it hard to believe the marriage occurred in Pittsylvania Co., VA since both the Manard and Lawrence families were in Wilkes County, NC by this time. AHB) 4 iii. Drury Manard was born before 1774. He married Unknown Unknown in North Carolina, circa 1790. Unknown was born before 1774. 5 iv. Susannah 'Sooky' Manard was born circa 1776. 6 v. Gibson Manard was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina circa 1778. Gibson died 22 Dec 1842 in Adams County, Illinois, at 64 years of age. His burial was after 22 Dec 1842 in Adams County, Illinois. He married Delilah Cate in North Carolina, circa 1800. Delilah was born circa 1781, in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Delilah was the daughter of Charles Cate Sr. and Sarah Baldwin. Delilah died 13 Sep 1876 in Adams County, Illinois, at 95 years of age. Her burial was after 13 Sep 1876 in Manard-Cate Cemetery, Honey Creek Township, Adams County, Illinois. 7 vi. Edith 'Edy' Manard was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina circa 1780. Edith died circa 1840 in Fayette County, Illinois. She married Nathaniel Beck in Wilkes County, North Carolina, circa 1802. Nathaniel was born circa 1765, in North Carolina. He married Unknown McGinnis before 1802. Nathaniel died circa 1840 in Fayette County, Illinois. 8 vii. Nancy Manard was born circa 1785. 9 viii. Larkin Manard was born in North Carolina circa 1786. Larkin died circa 1857 in Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia. He married twice. He married Phebe Phillips in Wilkes County, North Carolina, 18 Dec 1811. Phebe died circa 1830/37. He married Milly Dingler in Pike County, Georgia, in 1837. 10 ix. Sarah 'Sally' Manard was born circa 1791. 11 x. Catherine 'Catey' Manard was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina after 1792. 12 xi. Rhoda 'Rhody' Manard was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina circa 1795. Comments and corrections always welcome. Allan H. Baumbach 810 East Shady Way #309 Arlington Heights, IL 60005 Al in IL

    3. Hi Judy We-lllLLLLlllllll now. Isn't That interesting ? Let me ask you .... do you have any idea which county in NC ? Also. If Nancy, the d/o Gibson Maynard SR is my Nancy born in 1806, that would make Gibson Sr, 56 when she was born. Do you suppose he married a second time after Sarah Unknown was out of the picture. ? It looks like I'm going to have to investigate resources in NC a lot more aggresively. Although I remember my Father once saying that he thought the Maynard were from NC. Have I shared my Nancy Maynard information with you yet ? Id'd be happy to pass it along and have you examine it to see if you have anyother connections or insights. 2. I shall be visiting Cornwall and Devon starting on 17 May, with hopes of finding out more about Maynards in those shires prior to 1770. Please pass me any research leads you might wish explored. I may run into your ancestors while searching for mine. Cheers from Hal Maynard on Johnston Atoll (825 miles WSW of Honolulu)

    2. Terri, The WV State Archives has most of the records. This is located in Charleston, WV. When you are on I-64, you can see the capitol complex ( I believe it is exit 98 or 99). The street is Greenbriar street. The capitol exit is one exit past "Capitol street" Exit when you are going East. I always thought that was funny. There are signs at the same exit for the airport. For the Capitol and archives, go RIGHT off of the Greenbriar exit instead of left to the airport. The archives are across the street from the capitol complex. Take a pencil and paper. They do not allow pens. Copies are inexpensive and the staff is helpful there. I am married to a Maynard. I have Davis from Southern Ohio in my genealogy. I live in Cincinnati, OH and I will be making a trip to WVA the first weekend in June for the "June meetin'" of a church on Queen's Ridge in Wayne Co. I will be there May 31 and June 1-4. I also hope to do some research in Lincoln & Logan Counties, at least. Does anyone know if there is a genealogical society for each county? Where do I go for info, the courthouse, a library, or both? What type of info is held in the counties? The names that I am researching are: Bryant (Ball family married to Bryants), Dalton, Dawson, Ellerd, Honaker, Isaacs, Jackson (family married to Bryants), Marrs, Maynard-two branches, Maxwell, McCloud, Nelson, Pack, Pinson, Queen, Ratliff, Vance, Wellman-family of Lindsey, and Workman. I love to meet those related, gather stories, and old pictures. I do this research for my enjoyment, to share with other family members, and to give my children/grandchildren a personal feeling of their roots. This is not to produce any book or to make money. While in the area, I'll be happy to obtain information for others unable to make that trip! 3. Hello, Which Maynard lines are you researching? Mine are from Pikeville and Indiana: John Henry Maynard, James Mitchell Maynard, Edward Luther Maynard (who moved his family to Florida), and my father, Edward Luther Maynard, Jr. We believe that John Henry may be a son of James Maynard who was a son of Moses Maynard. Our John Henry married a Nancy James. Their son, James Mitchell, married Emma P. Honaker! I notice you have a Honaker in your list. Her grandfather, James Honaker, was an early sheriff of Pikeville, Kentucky. Do you see any possible connections with your family? Our James Mitchell, also appears to have married a Maynard, possibly from another line, Alifair Maynard, after he divorced Emma Honaker. Emma was very interesting and also may have carried these surnames: Akers and Hess. Do you know anything about her? 1. Maynard in Wayne County
    2. Terry - What branches of the Maynard family are you searching? I also belong to the William "Ben" and Lucindy (Smith) Maynard family from that area whose son, Elswick m Sue Likens. Their children were Minnie, Clyde, Lee, Ruby, Omay, General, Lafe, and our direct line, Floyd James Maynard, who married Martha Ellen Mills. If any of this family rings any bells with you, please email me, I have more on William's line. We are having a family reunion June 17th in Ripley, WV and are planning on doing some reasearch in Logan, Wayne, Ft Gay, and St Albans while we are there. Thank you for reading, Janette Harris Maynard

    1. Mary Jane Maynard
    2. I am reposting my research interest to the list. I am researching my gggrandmother Mary Jane Maynard Ware. This is what I know about her. Mary Jane was married to Manning Ware in Sudberry, Rutland, Vermont on January 3, 1839. She had at least one child a daughter Martha born October 10,1848 in Vermont. I do not have a birth or death recorded for Mary Jane. I do know that the daughter Martha died on July 31, 1917 in Ashtabula Co. Ohio. Perhaps Mary Jane and her family moved to Ohio. I have quite a bit of information on descendents of Mary Jane and Manning but nothing on Mary Jane's ancestory. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim Taylor of Warren, Ohio

    3. Well Gerry I'm also a Maynard Researcher, and I can only wish we were related. I would just about kill to find a Maynard researcher on my line that was half as thourough and half as generous as you have been in sharing your information. As A novice at this, you certainly set a good example of how to do my own work. Good Job.
