Dear Mayflower Enthusiasts, I recently read a book called "Plymouth Colony: Its History & People 1620 - 1691" by Eugene Aubrey Stratton, FASG, Former Historian General of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (copyright 1986). On page 424, in the chapter entitled "The 1627 Division of the Cattle", it states: "The eaight lot fell to Samuell ffuler & his company Joyned to him hiw wife Bridgett ffuler Samuell ffuler Junior Peeter Browne Martha Browne John fford Martha fford Anthony Anable Jane Anable hanah Anable Thom Morton Senor (name crossed out) Damaris Hopkins " I am interested in the names "Martha fford" and John fford". Would one assume their last names to actually be "Ford" or possibly "Safford" with the "Sa" missing? Was spelling of this type a common practice? Any thoughts or facts would be appreciated.
