Robert Charles Anderson has biographical sketches in GMB [available on paper, on CD, and online to subscribers of Ancestry.com or members of NEHGS] of the immigrant Winslow brothers. He includes some bibliographical information in which he says "From 1965 through 1970 John G. Hunt published seven short, intriguing articles on the Winslow family, examining the ancestry of the five brothers, both on the paternal and maternal sides [TAG 41:168-75, 42:52-55, 186-87, 43:239-41; NEHGR 121:25-29, 122:175-78, 124:182-83]. In 2000 Kenneth W. Kirkpatrick, building on the work of Hunt, published a detailed analysis of "the identity of the wife or mother of Edward [Winslow]'s paternal grandfather, Kenelm Winslow of Kempsey, co. Worcester" [NEHGR 154:78-108]." Hunts's article, "The 'Mayflower' Winslows-- Yeomen or Gentlemen?", NEHGR 121:27 [available online to NEHGS members] quotes a passage from John Hutchins's _History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset_, 3rd ed., vol. 1,. p. 232. This passage quotes the memoirs of a grandson of Magdalen Winslow [a William Wake who became Archbishop of Canterbury--even good Separatists have a few black sheep], and in part reads," my grandmother...was the daughter of Edward Winslow, a Gentleman of a Good Family in Worcestershire, was born December 26th, 1604; her name was Magdalene. ...[she] dyed in my Father's House at Shapwick in Dorset, May 25th, 1693...buried in the Tomb of my Uncle Edward Wake at Charlton...five children [of this Magdalen, wife of William Wake, not Magdalen Oliver Winslow, wife of Edward]...Wm. Wake...Magdalen...Edward...Charles...and two others, Edward and Margaret." [I count six, but there are two Edwards, so I'm guessing one died and was not counted in the five.] Magdalen(e) Winslow Wake is the only child other than the five brothers who came to New England mentioned by Hunt--I don't know if that's all the known children of Edward and Magdalen Oliver Winslow, but I'm sure you'll get an answer from the list. ***-----Original Message----- ***From: Schani Biermann [mailto:ussenterprise@sasktel.net] ***Sent: Wednesday, May 22, 2002 3:33 AM ***To: MAYFLOWER-L@rootsweb.com ***Subject: [MFLR] winslow *** *** ***preliminary research in my family tree indicates that i am descended ***(through marriage) from Kenelm Winslow, ***does anyone on the list have any info about Edward and Kenelm's ***brothers and ***sister who stayed in England and did NOT make the voyage to America.? *** ***a family database i have lists a sister, called Magdalene (probably named ***after her mother) who stayed in England ***Schani biermann, living in Western Canada
