Remember that the early settlers spoke with a "British Isles" accent of one sort or another. An Irishman or Scotsman, and probably people from England proper would very likely pronounce Piers with an extra 'e' . Piers is a name that does appear in a number of Celtic families. Thus we get Peres or Perez, totally unrelated to any Spanish or Portuguese connection. Len
