With reference to Southwark being on the "wrong side of the river [tracks]", I would point out that John Harvard (benefactor of the venerable institution in Cambridge, MA) was born in Southwark. I don't disagree that Southwark wasn't the best section of town, but just wanted to make this observation. There is a memorial to J.H. in a church in Southwark. You no doubt already know that he was a Puritan minister who immigrated to America and died childless, leaving a large portion of his estate and his library to the new college in Cambridge which was named in his honor.
