Hi Listers ~ I have Stephen SMITH, married Mary Ann Lockwood...with a date of Sept. 11th, 1816, in Darien, CT. Old papers I have say the information came from "the Smith Family Register". The problem comes in because I can't find either the register or a record in Darien (so far). I think they "could have" been married in NYC also. I did find an obit for Stephen dated 08-11-1875 in the CT Daily Constitution and at the end it says "Mr.Smith was grandfather to the wife of his honor, Mayor C.C.Hubbard of this city." Would that obit. be proof enough of the marriage? I do have proof of all the rest....this is the *last* marriage I need proof for! TIA for any advice! Dianne
Dianne, I can't see that the obit proves the marriage. However - there are times when proof for a marriage just cannot be located and the lineage is still approved by the Historian General in Plymouth. Whether or not your lineage would be approved depends on how solid the rest of your documentation is. If you have a well documented line, full of primary sources, chances are this one omission will be okay. However, if you have a weak lineage with many blanks, relying on secondary sources for your middle generations, then this omission will be harder to ignore. Susan E.
