    1. [MFLR] Refutation of claim by descendants of John Chipman d. 1819 in Grant Co., KY
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Chipman, Jump Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FO.2ADI/363 Message Board Post: Subject: claim of descent from John Jump Sr. (ca. 1749-1841), RW soldier who d. in Grant Co, KY, by descendants of John Chipman, d. 1819 in Grant Co., KY; this John Chipman erroneously claimed to be a son of John and Mary (Harris) Chipman of Guilford Co., NC. “Jump Genealogy” (1987 revision) by Robert Shearer et al discredits the claim that John Jump Sr. served in the NC militia during the RW. He actually served from PA. His pension records do not mention residence in NC, thus ending the claim that he served there. The claim is made that both John Chipman (d. 1819) and Perry Chipman (d. 1827) of Grant Co., KY (allegedly no. 274 & 279 respectively in “A Chipman Genealogy” 1970) were from NC, and were cousins. This claim was chiefly advanced by Everett and Lenore Chipman in their monograph “The Chipmans in Grant County, Kentucky.” Some have thought that “Perry” was a nickname for “Paris.” In reality, it seems to have been a surname used as a given name, and has no relation to “Paris” at all. That these men were from NC is easily refuted: The 1860 U.S. census for Guilford Co., NC (M653/900) pg. 9 lists Paris Chipman, age 67, white, b. NC. This is undoubtedly the real no. 274. The 1860 U.S. census for Obion Co., TN (M653/1267) pg. 60 lists JC Chipman, age 71, white, b. NC This is undoubtedly the real no. 279; it should be noted that in 1840 Obion Co. he is listed as John C.H. Chipman; some descendants of this man appear to have migrated to AR, but I have not traced them further. There is little doubt that Perry and John Chipman as discussed in paragraph 3 above were from DE and had lived for some time in VA; some farmers left VA after wearing out the poor land and relocated to PA and DE. I am not disputing the legitimacy of the descent of John and Perry Chipman of Grant Co., KY from John and Hope (Howland) Chipman; the claimed lines, however, are fallacious. Happy Halloween!
