I understood how the conversation got around to "Young boys joining the military, and I enjoyed looking at the websites that were posted about young boys/children being in the war, especially as drummers and fifers! One of the sons of my 3rd-great-grandparents must have lied his age to join at the age of 15. The Civil War pension claim that was filed on behalf of his sick and elderly, widowed father states that the son was 18 when he died from pneumonia in a military hospital in Chattanooga, TN. He had served for three years, so he must have been 15 when he volunteered. It did not state that his father signed for him to enlist, either, I don't believe. Why did he join at such a young age? The rest of the CW record file tells the story. His older brother had died at age 25 while serving in the war. His older brother had been supporting their father, financially, so the 15-year-old son decided to join in order to take care of his father. I have a friend who is trying to prove her Doty line, also, which was my other reason for being interested in your postings, and she did find out that someone in her ancestry was a fifer as a very young man, but his surname was not Doty. I wish you success in gathering your documentations, Lois Kortering Stephen Hopkins Richard Warren ----- Original Message ----- From: "GEANELLEN" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, October 31, 2006 1:07 AM Subject: [MFLR] Joseph Doty. > my sincere apologies to all of you who are trying to help me. > I see why I have confused you all.... > "Joseph Doty was born according to his civil war papers: 30 Dec 1852 in > New York." > should have read: "Joseph Doty was born according to his civil war papers > 1812 in New York. > the 30 Dec 1852 date was the date of his marriage to his 2nd wife & my > great great grandmother Eliza coffy/Mrs. Monda. > > I have not a clue why I type the wrong date. > again...
