Premier Pilgrim historian Dr. Bangs has generously given permission to the Pennsylvania Society of Mayflower Descendants to post the first two chapters of his forthcoming book on its Website, www.SAIL1620.org. The first chapter, titled "Disordered and Unlawful Conventicles," describes the beginning of the Separatist faith, their persecution and oppression by King James I of England, and the flight of many of its members to Holland. The difference between the Separatists and the Puritans is made clear. Chapter two, titled "Amsterdam, 1608," relates the problems that they encountered with the various dissenting groups already in Amsterdam during their year there and their subsequent move to Leiden in mid-1609. The two annotated chapters are accompanied by color illustrations. The chapters may be downloaded in the pdf format. Dr. Bangs is a former curator of the 1627 Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, MA. He is currently the director of the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum in Leiden, Holland. He is a major debunker of the many myths that have attached themselves to the Pilgrims. Two major articles about these myths are also found on www.SAIL1620.org.
