If you're looking for an ancestor's Revolutionary War *pension* file, then you do not need to know what unit the soldier was in, only the file number from the index I mentioned in my previous email. If you have access to a NARA regional office, the process is pretty easy. As Christie also noted, the pension file is far more likely to have useful genealogical information than muster rolls and the like.
