There was supposed to be a children's edition released last Spring of the 2006 "NY Times" best non-fiction book "Mayflower." Nathaniel Philbrick had previously published a youth version of his earlier NT Times best seller and award winning non-fiction "In the Heart of the Sea." In addition, there is another book by Philbrick published last year that should most certainly be of interest to this list. All folks interested in the ship "Mayflower," Pilgrims and Plymouth Colony should have on their shelf: "The Mayflower Papers - Selected Writings of Colonial New England," also published by the Penguin Group. Philbrick announced its imminent publication when he received the PA Mayflower Society's 9th annual "Katharine F. Little Distinguished Mayflower Scholarship Award" at its annual meeting in Jan 2007. Subsequently "Mayflower Papers" was reviewed in the SMDPA quarterly newsletter. "The Mayflower Papers" contains extracts from Bradford's "Of Plymouth Plantation," Bradford's and Winslow's "Mourt's Relation," Winslow's "Good News From New England," Thomas Morton's "New English Canaan" dealing with the Wessagussett Massacre and Ma-re Mount with its Maypole from Morton's perspective (therein Morton calls Capt. Myles Standish "Captain Shrimp"), Mary Rowlandson's "The Sovereignty and Goodness of God" (apparently the complete account of her 1676 horrifying experiences as a prisoner of the Native People during King Philip's War), and "Entertaining Passages Relating to Philip's War, 1716" by "Indian Fighter" Benjamin Church and Thomas Church. This latter work, also apparently the complete work, was heavily drawn upon by Philbrick in his "Mayflower" Part IV - "War" that dealt with the deadly King Philip's 1675-76 War that killed off eight (8!) percent of the Plymouth Colony male population (which Philbrick says is equal to twice the percentage of the American Civil War male deaths) and the death of 60 to 80 percent of the Native People. Even if you don't care for soft cover books, I wouldn't miss this one. The extracts might whet your appetite for the full versions of those extracts.
