I submitted any that I had to further substantiate my people. In the case of my grandmother and step-grandfather, I was unable to locate their marriage license. This still baffles me, however... I used both their death certificates (as well as their birth certificates obviously but.... fortunately my grandfather's d/c had my grandma's maiden name on it and showed her married name as the informant. I also sent their headstone photo. Here's another FYI for troublesome issues. If you have a living person who has personal knowledge of something that you might be missing... you can have them do a notarized affidavit. My father was illegitimate. So he didn't like that as public record. His Soc Sec application listed his grandparents as his parents. His first marriage listed his mother's real first name but her grandmother's maiden name and listed his father's real first name but used his own surname as his father's surname. His birth certificate listed his mother's name but unknown father and his death certificate was the only document that listed his true parents as my mother was the informant. Fortunately my mother is still around, 86 this year and I had her do an Affidavit attesting to the knowledge of dad's parents and also to the identify of all the individuals he used as his "parents" names. Fortunately everyone he USED.... were all part of the Mayflower line so I also had THEIR personal information attesting to THEIR parentage. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH if certifying your lineage isn't difficult enough. So just always remember, if you can't find a record and someone was witness to an event, etc. Try an Affidavit. I got approved even with all that mess. The bad thing in all this was the ONLY document listing my father's name on it as his father was the first marriage license where he used his first name....... and my father's death certificate where my mother used the whole name. So her affidavit was vital. Sometimes they are the only proof. I have used them for proofs in many organizations but usually they are frosting on the cake and submitted to add to the proof and have the information stored somewhere. I've also been accused in documentation that I over document typically using multiple sources for my proofs. Annie Grey Soule, my great grandmother, acutally has on her stone "9th in decent from pilgram George Soule." She is burried in C harleston, South Carolina.
