Sharon, Building on Dale's note, one of the Higgins sources listed in MF6 (my copy is 1995) is Katherine Chapin Higgins "Richard Higgins A Resident and Pioneer Settler At Plymouth and Eastham, Massachusetts, and at Piscataway, New Jersey", 1918. MF6 references several sections of the Higgins book including pp 85-86 and pp 674-5. On page 85 of the Higgins book: Samuel Higgins m (1) 4 Nov 1703 Hannah Cole dau of Israel and Mary (Paine) Cole, children Israel, Theodore, Ichabod and Samuel. Hannah is also a Hopkins descendant. Samuel m (2) 20 Mar 1717/8 Thankful Mayo dau of William Mayo, children William, John and Simeon. Samuel m (3) int 12 March 1739/40 Elizabeth Harding of Eastham. Regarding William, son of Samuel and Thankful p 85 states " b. Eastham 16 Aug 1719; d. ____. Nothing certain is known of this William. It is possible that he was the same as the William Higgins of Medfield, Mass., in 1737 or as the William of Chesterfield, Mass., in 1765, but no evidence to prove the conjecture has been discovered. (See Appendix A, IV.)" Note that "IV" must be a typo since the section is labeled "V" In Appendix A, pp 673 - 683 is information on The Higgins Family of Chesterfield. Quoting that reference: " 'William Higgins emigrated from old Bridgewater and settled in Chesterfield about 1765. He was a North of Ireland man who married a Welsh wife.' So wrote Mortimer L. Higgins in 1910 then aged ninety-four years and a lineal descendant of the said William Higgins. An attempt to discover this William Higgins in the records of the town of Bridgewater, Mass., ended in failure, as the records of that town show no William Higgins and in fact no Higgins whatsoever prior to 1765. However, in the town of Medfield, some twelve miles northwest of Bridgewater, is found a William Higgins and wife Deborah and three children born to them there. This William Higgins of Medfield attempted to gain a residence in Boston, as the records of the Boston selectmen show: 'June 9, 1742. Ordered that Mr. Savell warn William Higgins who lately came into this town from Medfield with his family to depart the Town as the law directs.' It seems probable that he left Boston and returned to Medfield, and that the son William, born Sept 1, 1739 in Medfield was the William Higgins who about 1765 settled in Chesterfield. We have no direct evidence either way. Another William Higgins arrived at Boston, April 22, 1766, in the schooner John & Jaz, from Ireland, a shoemaker. (Records of Boston Selectmen, Miscellaneous Papers, 1760.) Whether this Irish William Higgins, shoemaker, was permitted to remain in Boston is unknown. In 1790 there were two William Higginses and a Joseph Higgins residing in Boston. Whether one of these was the Irish William of 1766 or the Medfield William of 1742 is unknown, but the probabilities seem to favor the hypothesis that the Irish William remained in Boston, and that the Medfield William or his son William settled in Chesterfield. In this we may be mistaken, but for want of definite evidence we shall so place him." It goes on to discuss the William who settled in Chesterfield as perhaps the William b 1 Sep 1739 in Medfield. It does not give a marriage date or spouse. It does not list a child named William. However it does not have birth dates for any of the 12 children listed, only baptism dates for some. William of Chesterfield had Revolutionary service. Katherine Chapin Higgins cites from it. You might want to check that source as well. Thank you for this information, it is of most help. I really appreciate this. William and Deborah is where I am stuck. I have been searching different spellings of the Higgins name. Does the book have the children and spouses of Lydia Hopkins born 1727 who married Elijah Bragdon and lived in Maine. I wanted to buy one of these books and if Lydia and Elijah are in this one I will try and purchase this one.
