    3. True but for genealogy, we are not testing the entire DNA of individuals. Most of you may know this but fathers pass their Y-DNA to their sons, while mothers pass their mtDNA to both children...but only the daughter will pass it on to their children. Thus we have a chain if Y-DNA passed down the paternal line and a chain of mtDNA passed down the maternal line. The rate of mutations is fairly well known for both, so it is possible to estimate the number of generations back to a common ancestor. With sufficient markers tested (Y-DNA), the number of matches can determine how close two males are related.
