Scott: The Whitmarsh came from a Register article. The silver book for Cooke is correct, that is, her surname is Wheeler. The marriage entry for Mary Wheeler and John Reed appears in the Abington VR, p. 224 and it occurred in Rehoboth on Dec. 1, 1715. After John Reed's death, she married on April 17, 1739 a John Dyer. She died in Bristol on Dec. 1777. Dyer also died in Bristol. Some time ago, like about 2003, there was a discussion on this list about these same two people and the fact that the Register article about the Ford family and the Cooke silver calls her Wheeler rather than Whitmarsh. I researched this issue myself as far as VRs go and as cited above, found the marriage in the Abington VR as Wheeler not Whitmarsh. The same individual who was on the Mayflower list indicated that her line was accepted by the Mayflower Society with the Wheeler surname as the wife of John Reed. So, if you wish to make a comment in your notes about Mary Wheeler that in the Register she is cited as a Whitmarsh I would do so. In addition, make the comment that the Mayflower Society accepts the Wheeler name and I would go with the Wheeler name myself based on the marriage record. In addition, my husband is a Cooke descendant himself, not through this particular line, but he has a cousin who has sorted out the Reed families and he was a big help with this particular family when I talked with him about the problem/conflict. He too agrees that she should be a Wheeler and not a Whitmarsh. John Reed did have a first wife Sarah Hersey, but I have found nothing to document the 1712 marriage date that I have in my database, but surmise it to be that year based on the birth of his son John Reed who married Mary Torrey. Hope this helps. Christie -----Original Message----- From: Scottsfamilytree@aol.com To: MAYFLOWER@rootsweb.com Sent: Sat, 26 Apr 2008 1:12 pm Subject: [MFLR] Who was John Reeds second wife? On page 224, Vol 12, Family 193 John Reed it mentions his wives Sarah Hersey(?) And Mary Wheeler instead of Mary Whitmarsh, what do you think??In the Cooke Silver Book. In The Reed Genealogy, descendants of William Reed by John L. Reed. On Page 25. Family No. 13. It mentions that John Reeds first wife was Sarah Hersey and his second wife was Mary Whitmarsh. So who was John Reeds second wife? And other odd fact is that John Reed and his brother Jacob married two different women with the name Sarah Hersey. Scott McKay **************Need a new ride? That would seem to be the case - MFIP Cooke has "ca. 1712." Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants; Plymouth Co.
