Moses REDDING married Priscilla Rider in 1756 at Plymouth. Priscilla RIDER claims descent from at least four MAYFLOWER passengers: John ALDEN, William BREWSTER, William MULLINS and Richard WARREN. Their children were born in Middleborough/Middleboro, MA, and the family appears on the 1790 Census there. NOT until 1804 does the couple appear again. This time in Barnet, Caledonia Co, Vermont. They do NOT appear for certain on the 1800 Census. 1) I was wondering if anyone has access to Middleborough, MA land records that have a date or dates when Moses REDDING sold his land holdings in that town and departed ? 2) Is there any indication where Moses and family went and where they were during all those intervening 15 years ? Thanks, Bill Van Hemert William MULLINS Descendant

I'm going through the Kingston, MA VR's to check for birth, marriages and deaths and have a bit of a stallout on which Francis Adams married Mercy/Marcy Adams/Adames. On my first pass through these VRs I had Francis, b. Nov. 10, 1750 married to Mercy Adams 30 Nov. 1784. On my second pass through these VRs I then came across the marriage record for Marcy Adames marrying a Francies Adames on the same date with the entry above being the reverse. For the 1750 Francis I have no parents because the VRs don't indicate, just says he was the husband of Mercy Adams and also gives his name as Francis Jr. On the second pass I found a Francies Adams, s. of Francis and Rebeckah (Cooke), born Dec. 14, 1769. Obviously we're talking two different Francis' because of the spread of the birth dates. but there is only two marriage records and one of them is for Francis and Rebeckah (Cooke) Adams; therefore, we're left with only the entries under Adames for both Francies/Francis and Marcy Adames. Does anyone know if Marcy/Mercy Adams, who was born 7 July 1753 married the Francis born 1750 or the Francies born 1764? I suspect it is probably the 1750 one given the fact that if she did marry the one born 1764 that she was a whole lot older than he was given the time period. She was the daughter of John Adams and Thankful Washburn. A Billington descendant. I checked the Billington silver and Mercy is a 6th generation with no indication of any marriage. Darn!! I checked the Cooke silver and unfortunately the Francies born 1769 is 6th generation and it doesn't cite marriage either! Darn!!! The silver also changes the spelling of Francies to Francis. The 1750 Francis Adams is not mentioned in the Cooke silver, so he is not, as far as I can tell, a descendant of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower, but the 1769 one is. Christie Trapp
There is a new addition to my non-commercial domain, PlymouthColony.net - the Plymouth Colony Forums: http://plymouthcolony.net/forums For those of you not familiar with internet forums, they are web applications for holding discussions. Think of the Plymouth Colony Forums as a set of message boards grouped together and sharing a common theme. The theme encompasses New Plymouth Colony (1620-1685), the three Massachusetts counties formed from the Colony in 1685 (Plymouth, Barnstable and Bristol), and the families, towns and cities of those areas. Messages may concern genealogy, history or both. Registration is free, but visitors must register before they can post new messages or reply to existing ones. Anyone can read any and all posts without having to register. Everyone interested in the genealogy or history of the Old Colony, its child counties, towns and cities, or the families that lived in those areas, is welcome to visit and to participate. Dale H. For some reason, this did not get onto the list when I sent it yesterday and I wish to clear up an error. You are correct. I was not looking at the original papers submitted to the Mayflower Society for the first five generations. I was looking at the Brown Silver Book and I copied an incorrect entry from the book as being in my line. I added an extra generation for Ebenezer Tinkham marrying Hester Wright which was incorrect. This is what my papers say and I rechecked it with the Peter Brown Silver Mayflower Volume 7. Peter Brown Mary Brown m. Ephraim Tinkham Ebenezer Tinkham (b. 30 Sep 1651) m. Elizabeth Burrowes. Jeremiah Tinkham (b. 7 Aug 1681) m. Joanna Parlow Ebenezer Tinkham (b. 16 Dec 1714) m. Hannah Shaw Isaac Tinkham (b. 26 Nov. 1741) m. Lucretia Hammond The rest of it is correct. I have a CD called the Ricker Collection of CT VR. On it there are 3 Submit Porters, all of them born to Noah 2nd and Submit (Cook) Porter in Coventry, CT. 1. b. Feb 12, 1768 d. Feb 14, 1768 2. b. Jan 13, 1771 stillborn 3. b. April 27, 1773 The only other Submit Porter was d. of Abner, b. Dec 13, 1772 in Haddam. I would trust your Bible record, assuming it is clearly written, over the transcription any day. You should get the original record from CT State library and examine it. It is not uncommon for there to be transcription errors. Of course, if your Bible was done in 1912 and it is also a transcription, perhaps from an older one no longer in existence, then possibly it is the one that was mistranscribed. In any event, an examination of the original record seems to be the way to go to me. I believe that the Noah 2nd Porter mentioned above was probably the one who was son of Jonathan and Sarah Lad[d] b. Oct 6, 1742 in Coventry. Jonathan and Sarah were m. June 20, 1734 in Coventry. The only Submit Cook listed was b. Dec 29, 1747 in Coventry, d/o Jesse and Submit (Root). Hope this helps. -------------- Original message from Rodney Jewett <rootsweb@masonmichigan.net>: -------------- > Does anyone have any additional information on the Family of Submit > (Cooke) Porter? > > Here's my situation. > > According to a transcription from a family Bible made about 1912, my > GGGG-grandparents were Eleazer Jewett (born 29 Nov 1769 in Coventry > CT) and Submit Porter (born 27 Apr 1772). Does anyone have any additional information on the Family of Submit (Cooke) Porter? Here's my situation. According to a transcription from a family Bible made about 1912, my GGGG-grandparents were Eleazer Jewett (born 29 Nov 1769 in Coventry CT) and Submit Porter (born 27 Apr 1772). They were married 9 Dec 1792. She died 24 Jul 1827 in Langdon NH. According to the transcription, their first 5 children were born in Coventry and next 5 were born in Langdon NH. Their marriage and children do not appear in the Coventry vital records. In "Vital Records of Coventry, Conn. 1711-1844" page 92, a Submit Porter was born 27 Apr 1773 (same day, 1 year different) to Noah 2d and Submit (Cook) Porter. In the Cooke silver book Submit Cooke (#2456) had the last name Porter in 1792. I'm looking for the parents of 'my' Submit Porter. If anyone has any info to support or deny this connection, I'd appreciate it.
What I outlined at the end of the Age of Consent reply is this: Thomas Weston m. 1723 Mary Howland. Child Thomas b & d 1725 [Other children are born, I presume but don't know.] Mary (Howland) Weston dies Feb 1730. Thomas Weston [same as above, we presume] m. May 1730 Prudence Conant. [Children are born to this couple. Some or all not recorded?] Prudence (Conant) Weston makes will dated October 1765. HER son Thomas Weston is said to be deceased by Oct 1765. THEREFORE, it is possible that the Thomas Weston who marries in Boston in Dec 1751 to Isabella Campbell could be the Thomas Weston, son of Prudence menioned in her will. ALL original documents on this family over 2 to 3 generations need to be examined. IF this identification has not already been writtne up in say The Mayflower Quarterely. So also a literature search needs to be undertaken. So thats the Theory. Robert M. GerrityYANKEE ANCESTRYP. O. Bill asked > Questions: 1) Aside from custom, what is the minimum age for a man and woman to marry in Boston in the mid-18th Century. 21+ without consent, technically. 16-21 with consent. Historians generally assume Age Range at First Marriage as Women = 18-25, and Men = 21-28. However, as a General Generality, I would use W=17-26 and M=18-29. I'm never surprised by people marrying later in the ranges; I am surprised if either is younger than 17 or 18. The Men more than the Women fall into the mid-range & later. See the classic book Four Generations about the period 1680-1750 in Adnover, Mass. Also, Demos' Little Commonwealth. The reasons are kind of obvious: father's need the sons' labor on the farm longer than the mother's need the daughters' labor in the house, plus the clearly understood dynamic of women better undergo pregnancy earlier in the range, plus the death rate of women in pregnancy, during labor and shortly thereafter. But each town and family will have variations. > 2) How old MUST a man be to convey real estate in Plymouth in the mid-18th Century. As above, as I've a family record of a 17 year old in the American Army having to agree to a guardian so some land belonging to his father could be sold [Plymouth Probate]. However, I've never seen of a guardianship for an 18-year old for the same. Functionally, 18 was the age you could sell property, IF you had clear title to it. Getting married usually ended all such issues about competence to do such things. > I am trying to establish birth/death dates and parents for Thomas WESTON, father and son. In the HOWLAND Silver Book, p163, Thomas WESTON’s first marriage to Mary HOWLAND , 1723, is recorded along with the birth/death of son Thomas in 1725, followed by Mary’s death in February, 1730. Using the ranges above, the TW who marries in 1723 could have been born between 1694 and 1705. But you then have to square that theory against what you can find for a TW in the old Silver Soule book and/or in other published material. Its all about constructing a chain of inferences and then trying to find some limiting information. This Mary Howland would then have a range of 1697 to 1706. How does that match up with her parents' entry in the Howland book? > Thomas remarries Francis COOKE descendant, Prudence CONANT, in May, 1730. Thomas died before May, 1743, when Prudence was name administrator of his estate in Plymouth. and> There is a record of 'a' Thomas WESTON marrying Isabella CAMPBELL in Boston, Dec, 1751. Prudence, Thomas, Sr’s widow, says her son Thomas is deceased in her will dated Oct 1765, but has surviving children. Ah, now here's The Possibility! The "son Thomas" who is born and dies in 1725 is the son of MARY HOWLAND, not Prudence Conant. IF --> indeed Prudence refers to a deceased son Thomas in her 1765 will, THEN--> that son Thomas Weston is a SECOND son so named of TW d 1743. Its very unlikely that Prudence would need to reference a deceased baby by her husband's FIRST wife. So just what is actually said in Prudence's will needs to be read from the original. For instance, is she referring to CHILDREN of her deceased son Thomas? So, yes, its quite plausible but needs proof in some fashion that, yes Thomas WESTON who died by 1743 had TWO SONS named Thomas, one by Mary Howland who b & d in 1725, and the other, unrecorded apparently, by Prudence Conant who was born very late 1730 and is deceased himself by 1765. IF so, then a TW who marries in Boston in 1751 can indeed be OF AGE to marry on his own, i.e. 21 (Dec 1730 to Dec 1751). OK, everybody got that? Which is why a re-search of Plymouth deeds and probates for Westons needs to be undertaken. You would be looking for the "smoking gun" that is a document mentioning an "Isabella Weston" in reference to land or people otherwise known to be associated with the Thomas Weston who dies by May 1743. After Mr. Weston it passed into the hands of Consider Howland and was sold by his son, Thomas Southworth Howland to James Warren,in 1764, and remained in the Warren family until it was sold by Mary Warren the widow" etc. + ONLY by reviewing the original deeds on microfilm [NEHGS has several copies & its orderable from FHC of course] can anything be CORRECTLY interpretated from them. In otherwords, I'd undertake a complete search of ALL Weston deeds for 75 years+ to see who's doing what, rather than rely on Davis's precises. However, in the meantime, in this case A "Thomas Weston", of Plymouth? [see what I mean by having to check the original], was of age in 1725 to complete a land purchase. The next sentence infers that this same Thomas Weston then sold/transferred it to Consider Howland, perhaps his son in law but perhaps not. > Page 175: "The next lot was sold to Nicholas Drew to Donald Turner, who sold it to THOMAS WESTON, by whom it was conveyed to his son-in-law, WILLIAM WESTON, and by him in 1796 to his son, COOMER WESTON, who built and occupied the house now standing, and was the father of the late COOMER WESTON." One could presume that as these are adjoining lots, this "Thomas Weston" is the same as the man above but again who knows? No date for the Drew to Weston transfer is given. That it goes from Thomas Weston to a son-in-law is stated in this case, so deciding just who this TW is can be firmed up using the in-law information against other published sources. > Page 175: "The next lot was sold by Nicholas Drew to David Turner . . . who sold it to THOMAS WESTON whose son THOMAS conveyed it, in 1755 to WILLIAM WESTON, who built the house now standing. WILLIAM WESTON sold it in 1797, to his son, LEWIS WESTON, the father of the late BENJAMIN WESTON who occupied it until his death, and whose heirs sold it in 1881 to Thomas B. Swift."NOW, this one clearly states that there's a "father Thomas" to "son Thomas" link. BUT if "son Thomas" sells it in 1755 to his own "son-in-law" William Weston [see second deed above], THEN the first purchasing Thomas has to be the Grandfather of the wife of William Weston. Which in turn suggests that the Thomas named in the first two deeds is the Thomas called "son Thomas" inthe thrid deed. OR this could be a copying error on Davis's part. Have to check the original. Really, without having the old Silver Book 3 and the newer Howland book to hand, and say a 19th century Weston Family compilation to boot, trying to sort out who's who based on these precises is just a start on figuring out this "Other" Thomas Weston who is being discussed here. Its quite doable and I'm a bit surprised it hasn't been addressed before in say the MQ pages. I don't have time to check the printed sources as, yes, they aren't to hand! Robert M. Hello, Based on the fact that Thomas Weston, son of Mary Howland Weston, died at infancy, it is clear he was not the husband of Isabella Campbell. I will try to find out if the husband was the son of Prudence Weston or Joseph Weston. Both had sons Thomas within a few years of Mary's son's death and could have married Isabella. Hi Randy - Thanks for looking at those records. I wonder if you might check the Boston records for the births of children to Isabella CAMPBELL & Thomas WESTON. The possible 2nd marriage is also interesting. Thanks. My line is through Capt William WESTON's half-brother Joshua. Thos WESTON's connection to the family has always been of interest. Randy: Thanks for the help in straightening out my database. I'll just change the name of the wife to the son John rather than deleting the record and re-entering it. Someone else sent me an interesting citation that is on google books which talks about the elder John Chipman in the Beverly church and in that source it does state he was married to both women. It mentions his son John, but doesn't name any wife for the son. Your citations do that, which helps immensely. I think the person who sent me this source had put in the parameters "John Chipman" "Hannah Warren" and came up with it. Thanks again.
