How funny that this would come up. I am reading David Hackett Fischer's Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America (which I highly recommend). Here is a passage from the section on Sussex (England) naming patterns and hortatory names. "A classic example was an unfortunate young woman named ffly fornication Bull, of Hailsham, Sussex, who was made pregnant in the shop of a yeoman improbably called Goodman Woodman." When I read last week I had never seen "ff" for a name beginning before and then it came up on this list. What timing! Julianne Fishell
Thanks so much for your reply. Here is my line. I believe I have each line documented from gen 5. I have excellent documentation from Mehitabel Adams/Miles Jones down to myself. Wilma, The double f spelling was common. "fford" means Ford. I recommend you read Robert Charles Anderson's _The Great Migration Begins, vol. 1, pp. 686-687. (He cites Florence Barclay 's article in TAG 42:35-42.) He says that William Ford of Marshfield was NOT part of the Plymouth Ford family. Kendall Mellem jimell@swbell.net

Ellen - Their surname was indeed Ford - they were the surviving children of widow Martha (___) (Ford) Brown and her first husband, and the "Peeter Browne" and "Martha Browne" listed just before them were their stepfather and their mother Martha (___) (Ford) Brown died between the division of cattle on 22-May-1627 and about 1630 (2nd husband's 2nd marriage). She came with her son John Ford, daughter Martha Ford and probably her husband (she was in the late stages of pregnancy) on the Fortune in 1621. Her husband (___) Ford is not mentioned in Plymouth records. He probably was alive on 11-Dec-1621 when Edward Winslow referred to his wife in a letter as "Goodwife Ford." He died before the division of land about March 1623/4 when she was alloted land as "Widow Ford." The widow married 2nd about 1624-25 as his 1st wife Peter Brown of the Mayflower, who married 2nd about 1630 Mary (___). She had three children by her first husband: John Ford was born about 1617, presumably in England, and died between a record on 05-Jan-1640/1 and the list of those able to bear arms in 1643 (he is not listed therein). Martha Ford was born about 1619, presumably in England, died 20-Dec-1683 in her 64th year (Plymouth Church Records) and married 29-Oct-1640 (PCR) William Nelson (I am descended from their son John). They had four children. A son was born the night the Fortune landed (as mentioned in Winslow's letter referred to above) and died before the division of cattle on 22-May-1627 (he is not named therein). Dale H. According to "Some of the Descendants of William Chase or Roxbury and Yarmouth, Mass." compiled by George Walter Chamberlain, M.S., for John Carroll Chase and published in Genealogies of Rhode Island Families - From the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume I, as selected and introduced by Gary Boyd Roberts, Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1989 - Obadiah Chase of Putnam County and Washington County, NY, b. 1743, d. 4 July 1799, aged 56 years and m. to Susannah Knapp, was the son of Isaac Chase (Isaac, John, William, William) of Putnam County NY who was b. at Yarmouth 28 March 1714, d. probably at Saratoga, NY. Isaac m. at Harwich 17 Nov 1737, Thankful Maker, daughter of John and Mary (Hopkins) Maker of Harwich. Isaac was purported to have had a second wife by whom he had two children, but it seems likely that Obadiah was son of Isaac and his first wife, Thankful, given the date of his birth and the fact that Isaac had nine children and Obadiah is listed as the second. Also, if you are, or become a member of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society at http://www.newenglandancestors.org/ you can search their data bases which include all volumes of the NEHGS Register 1847-1994 and the following: The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633 Massachusetts Soldiers in the Colonial Wars Legislators of the Massachusetts General Court, 1691-1780 Divided Hearts, Massachusetts Loyalists 1765-1790 Massachusetts Militia Companies and Officers in the Lexington Alarm Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850 Massachusetts Pension Judy Chace Needham

This is in response to the mention of no silver book for John Howland. Elizabeth White is the past editor of the Mayflower Quarterly, and has been the trustee/chairman/president of several other geneaological groups. She was asked by the Society many years ago to do this project with a projection of about five years to complete. At the time, this was acceptable. She is not working alone--Edwin Coles is currently working with her on volume three as he did for for vol. 1 & 2. Roberta Bratti has also assisted. Mrs. White's husband is an invalid now, so this has slowed things down as you can imagine. However, vol. 3, desc's of Hope is nearing completion. It is over 1000 pages! Compare that to vol. 1, desc's of John Jr--under 500 pages! Hope is near or at the top for the 10 Howland children for desc's. For years Mrs. White has been sending 3-8 page articles from the upcoming book on Hope's desc's for publication in the Howland Quarterly so some of the info is out there. (Please do not ask me to look up Hope info--the HQ's are not indexed--unfortunately. This is another project) It would be very difficult for someone to "start over" with desc's books for Howland. It would take alot of time just to catch up to the vast amount of knowledge Mrs. White has and to get up to speed. Any volunteers out there? I do NOT mean to sound harsh--I know you were not blaming her. I know the frustrations of waiting for genealogical material--none of us want to wait! Myself included!! Just please know this huge vol. is nearing completion. I have no dates yet. Please be patient. Gail Adams Editor of the Howland Quarterly
John, The Mayflower Society hasn't bothered to publish a silver book on John Howland's descendants. As far as I know there's only one genealogist, Elizabeth Pearson White, who's independently taken up the task, and intends to create a multivolume set (one book per each of John's ten children), but after a decade hasn't finished past the first two, John and Desire (not that I blame her, it's a lot of work). What I don't understand is why the Mayflower Society hasn't taken a more active role in ensuring these publications (hiring genealogists, overseeing and sponsoring research, etc.), but they obviously don't feel it's a priority. It seems to me that if they can do it for John Alden's huge family, then they can and should do the same for Howland's! I'm a descendant of John's daughter Hope, and have been waiting for ages. Maybe some representative from the Mayflower Society on this list can enlighten me on this matter? As far as your possible Howland-Elwell connection, I saw on your homepage that your ancestor William Elwell married a Mary Cobb. Have you traced her Cobb line? John Howland's grandaughter Hope Chipman (daughter of his daughter, Hope) married Jonathan Cobb and many of their children and grandchildren settled in Maine where Mary was born. Good luck!
