If you know anything I'd appreciate your help. This line has got me stuck. I can't find anything on Elijah Gurney's parents. I do know that Elijah was a state rep. for Missouri in the 1880s. Thanks, Cassie I don't know if Elijah is a Cooke descendant, but perhaps some census information could help you work back. In the 1920 census Elijah is listed in Caldwell Co., Kidder Twp., MO. He is 77, and has son Elijah, 46 in the household with him. I cannot read the name of Elijah S. Gurney's wife--it begins with M. Elijah and both his parents are said to be born in Ohio. In the 1850 census, Cuyahoga Co., Mayfield, OH is Elijah Gurney, age 8, in the household of A. H. Gurney (A.H. was there in 1840 as well) A. H. Gurney's name is almost unreadable in the 1850 census and he is not indexed at Ancestry--but he's there, age 37, born in Ohio. I don't know with certainty that this is your Elijah. There are also Reed, 13; Rebecca, 11; Isaac, 5; Charles, 2. There was an Elijah S. Gurney in C Company, 1st Ohio Light Art'y in the Civil War--enlisted 9 Sep. 1861--maybe there are records showing something useful.

A Brief Genealogical and Biographical History of Arthur, Henry, and John Howland and their Descendants... by Franklyn Howland, 1880, shows on p. 112 a Judith Howland "b. 9, 2, 1760; d. ___; m. Jethro Hathaway. Had: 1, Charles; 2, Lydia; 3, Judith; 4. Pardon." [Looking at other dates on that page, the format appears to be Day, Month, Year] This Judith is shown as a descendant of Henry, not John, Howland. The ascent back up to Henry is shown on p. 111: Gideon^5, Barnabas^4, Benjamin^3, Zoeth^2, Henry^1. Gideon (father of Judith above) was "born at Round Hills farm, Dartmouth, 29, 3, 1734; m. 25, 3, 1753, Sarah, dau. of Capt. Thomas and Judith Hicks, b. 13, 1, 1736, d. 9th mo., 1824. All his children are mentioned in his will." Regards, Howard
Here's another Howland question I found in the NEHGS 1961 article about Ezra Perry's descendants. The comment made by the author under Nathan Perry's info was that Lydia Hathaway, b. in 1785, d. 27 Feb 1822, dau of Jethro and Judith (Howland) Hathaway and a descendant of John Howland of the Mayflower. Question: Can someone provide me with the line of descent, with vitals and sources, for Judith Howland starting with John Howland down to her? Obviously she is not listed in the index for the two published Howland books to date so am curious as to which of John Howland's children she descends from. The article also mentioned that Nathan and Lydia had six children, but none were listed. Question: Can someone who is a descendant of these two bring the line current by providing the names and dates for the six children? Christie Trapp

A soundex search of the NEHGR website found only one reference to Tamar Rogers - an 06-Oct-1819 marriage in Boston to John J. Crossby, both described as "Mullattoes, both of Boston." Dale H. John Nelson, b. ca 1644 m. Lydia Bartlett (second husband). Lydia was the granddaughter of Richard Warren of the Mayflower. This John Nelson was the son of William Nelson and Martha (Ford) Nelson. Page 16 of Warren (MFIP or "Pink" booklet 1991) Robert Bartlett of the "Anne" by the Mayflower Society, 2000 page 9 also states that this John Nelson married Lydia Bartlett. Her birth is listed on page 2 as daughter of Roberth Bartlett and Mary Warren. I do not have a Rogers Mayflower volume so do not know if there is a connection between surnames Nelson and Rogers.

Christine - To add to Karen and Richard's replies, John Howland of the Mayflower was followed by his brothers Henry by 1633 and Arthur (Mary's father) by 1640. See: "Arthur Howland of Plymouth, Mass., His Wife Margaret (___) Walker, and Their Children" by Robert S. Wakefield and Robert M. Sherman, National Genealogical Society Quarterly, v. 71, pp. 84-93. "Henry Howland of Duxbury, Massachusetts, 1633, His Children and His Grandchildren" by Robert S. Wakefield and Robert M. Sherman, National Genealogical Society Quarterly, v. 75, pp. 105-116, 216-225. In articles about Plymouth Colony families you will frequently see citations of The Mayflower Descendant. This does not necessarily imply Mayflower descent for the person concerned. MD was not a magazine of compiled Mayflower genealogies, rather, it was a journal of primary sources. The town vital records published therein are especially frequently cited in other works. George Ernest Bowman, the founder and first editor of MD, published literal transcriptions of town records, a pattern which has been followed in VR volumes published in the last few decades. Literal transcriptions must be indexed and can be a bit more difficult to use than the alphabetized volumes published early in the last century by NEHGS, but they are generally preferred by researchers. In the literal transcriptions the births of a couple's children are frequently listed together, and other family relationships are often easier to distinguish in a literal transcription. Many clues found in a literal transcription can be lost in the alphabetized rearrangement. Also, the alternative sources cited in the alphabetized VRs may sometimes be a trap for the unwary (especially private records) Dale H.
