    2. Is there a Mayflower connection in the Nathaniel Dickinson lineage? Thank you in advance for any information. Nathaniel Dickinson was the emigrant ancester. He was b. abt. 1600 and d. 16 June 1676. He married Anna GULLl. 3. Mimi: I had also come across the same problem. I had been unable to find a birth record of my grandmother. I had e-mailed the Mayflower Association in Boston . And they had mentioned is another form of information that could be used is a census record . This would show who her/his parents were and the age of that person, and who the parents were. Today I received a letter back from the state where I was sure one of my grandmothers was born, stating that no record of her birth had been found. The search goes on, but it did raise the question for me, what if I CAN'T find a birth certificate or official record for her (or someone else in my line)? What other options do I have that would be acceptable? Anyone who has been done this road and has some words of wisdom to share? Do the options get wider as I get further away from myself? I'm fairly certain that I have at least three (actually four) lines of descent by which I could claim membership in the Society (assuming that I can prove them). I have contacted the Society about two of the three lines (I didn't have the info on the third and fourth yet) to see if other descendants had applied for membership, and found out that both lines are proved to the fifth generation. Which is great but doesn't get me much farther ahead since I knew that the Society had already proved the first five generations anyway. I still have high hopes for that third and fourth routes. And it occurred to me that someone on this list might know something about some of these generations beyond the fifth. In NGSQ 75:105ff there is an article by Robert Wakefield and Robert Sherman ("Henry Howland of Duxbury, Massachusetts, 1633") which states. "Although this wife is called Mary Newland by several writers, no evidence for her surname has been located in a contemporary record." (NGSQ 75:105") Also, according to the article, the marriage was "probably" in England. I noticed that Anderson's GMB cites this article, so as recently as 1995 it appears there had been no change. I know nothing about what may have happened since then. Harlow

    2. Raymond Wing
    3. I have found more information on Elizabeth (GIBBS) Muxom which supports the statement she was the daughter of Job Gibbs & Judith Bates. On page 54 of the published Wareham Church Records, taken from page 62 of the original records, shows deaths for 1791 as follows: "8 Elisabeth Muxham died of a numb palsy Sep. 17 -- AE 86th" Elizabeth, daughter of Job & Judith was born 15 AUG 1706. Today we would call Elizabeth age 85 at the time of her death. However, when she died (in 1791) it was the custom to say in her 86th year. It appears that Elizabeth was about 45 years old when her last child was born. While rare, it was more common for a woman to have had their last child at age 45, then at age 34 [the age Elizabeth Gibbs, daughter of Thomas Gibbs & Joanna Swift was]

    3. I've had interesting conversations off-list with subscribers regarding documentation of sources for web pages. Folks have found a number of ways to partially automate the production of a site with source references, but I haven't yet seen anything that I think would help with the format I've chosen. I'm using a modified Register format, with inline source abbreviations hotlinked to expanded source information (inspired by recent Five Generations books and the online edition of "The Great Migration Begins"). If you would like to see the format I'm using, be my guest. Be aware that this is very much a work in progress and is not yet "public." In order to keep this on topic <grin> I'll point you to what I'm working on for the Washburn family - John^2 Washburn married Elizabet Mitchell (grand-daughter of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower). http://www.angelfire.com/ma4/oldcolony/genealogy/washburn1.html Dale H. 1. Re: [MFLR] William Soule's wife Hannah & Soapbox
    2. Susan, I think your soapbox was an unfair response to a simple and entirely appropriate question. It's arrogant of you to presume that everyone has or should have your knowledge of, or access to, the "accepted" sources in Mayflower genealogy. For most newbies, including myself, it can be very difficult to discern which sources are reliable and which are not. The theory that William's wife was Hannah Brewster was (first?) proposed in Ridlon's genealogy of the Soule family, which the Mayflower Society itself used as a reference in its Soule Silver book. Let's keep this an "open" forum where ANYONE with questions can post without fear of petty criticism. roser@iprimus.ca writes: > > There seems to be a large amount of conflicting information regarding > Hannah, the wife of William Soule (bef. 1671 - 1723). > > > > Some have her listed as Hannah Brewster and refer to two other husbands of > Hannah Brewster, to wit: John Thompson and Samuel Starr. > > > > Does anyone know who Hannah, the wife of William Soule was? 1. Re: [MFLR] William Soule's wife Hannah & Soapbox
    2. Dale H Cook
    3. I would have to agree with Susan - I don't see any conflict here. I looked at all seven of the sites that Steve mentioned. The first four did not cite sources. The fifth cited a family history for the marriage of William Soule and Hannah Brewster: G.T. Ridlon Sr., History, Biography and Genealogy of the Families Named Soule, Sowle and Soulis, Journal Press, Lewiston, Maine, Volume I, This book is the second volume of the history and genealogy of the Soule, Sowle and Soulis families of Connecticut., 1926, ONLY FIVE HUNDRED COPIES PRINTED. I am not familiar with this work and do not know whether or not it in turn cites a primary source for the marriage. The web site does not specify which page of the genealogy that information comes from. The sixth site did not cite sources. The seventh site has "REFERENCE: 12332" under the names of both William Soule and Hannah Brewster, but it is not hotlinked or footnoted so I have no idea what "REFERENCE: 12332" is. By contrast the work that Susan cited (MF 5) does document its sources. Now for my soapbox <grin>... There are precious few web sites that cite a source for each item of information. There is a very tiny subset of those that cite volume and page for each item in the way that any major genealogical journal does. Perhaps that is because citing volume and page requires a) detailed source citations in one's database and b) lots of hand-writing or hand-editing of HTML code. I can speak from the experience of my work on my own nascent genealogy site. I export each family from my database to RTF format with full footnotes for the citations, and massage it by hand to hotlink each item of information to its source, citing volume and page. It is a great deal of work, requiring about 15 hours to produce a 30k page for the second generation of one family. I have not found any tools that can partially automate the process while providing detailed source citations. Dale H. 2. stephen ferriss
    3. Thanks very much for the response. I received two others off the list but none quite so . . um, er, pointed. J You wrote: "Wouldn't it be much better to say for example, I found this data at the LDS site - how reliable is it?" I guess it might have been "better" . had I gathered my information from the LDS site. While I enjoy the genealogy hobby, I have to sandwich my hobby time (like many folks) between many other "conflicting" responsibilities and, as a consequence, I don't often have well-organized notes. I apologize for not listing my references and for creating the circumstances that led you to your erroneous conclusion (that the info was from the LDS site). Below are a few sites (at least one of which mentions Ridlon) . that mention that William Soule married Hannah Brewster. I in no way endorse their conclusion or methods . simply found them while doing a google search . there were many more as well. Ancestry.com has some lines that also include the Soule/Brewster union. We are all well aware of the dual nature of interent information ... some is great and some is garbage. Of course, all of these folks (with the exception, perhaps, of Ridlon) could have gotten their information from the LDS site??? My question was not so much concerning the reliability of the LDS site (or any site) but rather attempted to address: 1) the certainty of anyone's knowledge of an event so long past, (which you answered: no one knows for certain unless your answer is "no one knows the identity but it certainly is not Hannah Brewster?) and mostly 2) the reason for the confusion. As a neophyte to the genealogy hobby, I thought that there may have been some long story about feuding genealogists disagreeing .. Something along the lines of why there is no Silver book on Howland (which I'd still like to know). Again I apologize that my question was framed so poorly that it elicited the soapbox's wrath. I'll be much more careful in the future. You wrote: "The fact that in this case, Mayflower research does not agree with the data found at the site, does not mean there is conflicting data, it means that like a great deal of the data found in the Ancestral Files, it is old, unproven and unreliable." Regarding the denotation of "conflict" (or "data") and whether conflict does not exist when one side of the "conflict" doesn't recognize any validity in the other's argument . well I'll leave that alone . it does sound a bit like the Middle East where much effort is spent on whether one side will "recognize" the rights of the other side to "exist" when they certainly are existing.. these distinctions are for greater minds than mine .. You wrote: "To say it is conflicting is actually misleading and leads people to think there is some question about the line -" If I could "lead people to think" ANYTHING I'd have made millions in marketing. J People think what they want to think. I'm a functionalist (a la Katz) with regard to persuasion. You wrote: ".when there hasn't been a question for years, if ever." I'm certain you mean something like "there hasn't been a 'legitimate' question for years, if ever" or something similar. It is obvious to me that some folks still are "questioning" whether Hannah Brewster was William Soule's wife. I apologize again for (seemingly) touching a nerve. Any idea why there seems to be so much confusion regarding her? ________________________ I'm not sure where you are getting your info from, but there is no conflicting data or confusion over Hannah ( ) Soule or Hannah (Brewster) Starr. The identity of the wife of William Soule is unknown and has been unknown as far back as the 1980 Soule MF 5 generation silver book. It remains unknown today in the Soule MFIP books. The Hannah Brewster who married Samuel Starr is the daughter of Jonathan2 Brewster (William1). She m. 2nd, James Morgan. (There was no John Thompson involved.) ____________________ Now for the soapbox: It would be of tremendous help to give the source when stating there is conflicting data so that those who read the data we submit can evaluate it's reliability. A check of the LDS site shows this is where the above data came from. The fact that in this case, Mayflower research does not agree with the data found at the site, does not mean there is conflicting data, it means that like a great deal of the data found in the Ancestral Files, it is old, unproven and unreliable. To say it is conflicting is actually misleading and leads people to think there is some question about the line - when there hasn't been a question for years, if ever. Wouldn't it be much better to say for example, I found this data at the LDS site - how reliable is it? Susan E. 3. Right on, Susan! Let's FIRST get the facts straight. There is FAR TOO MUCH MIS-information on the various internet sources. Bette Bradway (Assist. Hist. General)
