VR CD from S & R and has found instances where the gender of an Abiah is clear to be about in the ratio of 7 male to 31 female. The Genferret admits to not being scrupulous about keeping count or of being absolutely certain there were not duplications or omissions. In fact the Genferret can pretty well guarantee there were as this was very quick and very dirty. In an earlier message the Genferret mentioned that there is Biblical precedence for the use of Abiah for either sex. Clearly it was freely used for boys and girls by the people of Plymouth County. The Genferret, who is so often bemused at the ways of humans, has no idea why. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 2. Recently someone asked about the sex of a person named Abiah. Almost everytime I have seen it, it is in reference to a male, but I have an ancestor, Abiah Peirce who was a female. I have come across this ancestor in tow primary sources as well as several secondary and this is always her name (Not Abigail, etc) Betty Wilson

My brother died suddenly and while I was taking care of his things my email was lost! I would like to get the addresses of those that I have been talking to in the past. I hope I can reach everyone. My brother's death has taught me a very valuable but hard lesson, don't ever leave off until tomorrow what you should do and say today!!! Never leave without saying your sorry, even if you were not in the wrong. There may not be a time to make up. Love to all! Sorry if you receive this more than once but I have to contact all my groups. Thanks, Amy West

Except I do not know a thing about setting up a chat line. Forgive me for being repetitive. I looked at Cindy's List for some help and subscribed to some IRC lists. Sincerely, Scott

Incidentally, it took several months for mine to go through, and I'm still in therapy resolving guilt issues for having submitted it. They were gracious and efficient, of course, and there was not the slightest suggestion that my synopsis was not welcome. But perhaps going through the state society as the GSMD webpage suggests would be faster. This is what Susan's webpage says "There is a way to find out if someone else has joined the society based on your line, you can send a synopsis of your lineage to the General Society and ask them to do a search for a well documented paper that matches yours. A synopsis form can be printed from the General Societys site (where you will also find their address) and should be filled out (Mayflower passenger #1) and sent along with $10.00 (U.S.)." As she says, the address is at the GSMD site, but you're right, it doesn't specify you should use this for the synopsis. 1. Re: [MFLR] John Howland
    2. Hi Betty---and any other Howland's out there: I was pretty sure you meant the Howland Society--I just wanted to make sure before I sent an answer! We have about 1800 members and publish the Howland Quarterly which is free with membership. We own Howland House in Plymouth, Mass. This home was lived in by Jabez--a son of John Howland & Elizabeth Tilley. We know that John and Eliz. stayed there and the house is known in Plymouth as the "Last house standing where a Mayflower passenger lived" (There is one older house--the Sparrow house--1640, so I am sure Mayf. folks probably went inside there). We also own a good chunk of Rocky Nook, which is the property John bought in 1638 through his death (1672). His son Joseph also had a house on another section of the property. The past several summers we have had members there doing archealogical digs. These are professionally done with folks from the Univ. of Virginia. Several of our teenagers from different states have become very good friends doing the dig. I can picture them 50 years from now them saying "remember when we were young and dug all that dirt and salied that little boat up the river...." We are also building a shallop to sail up the Kennebc River just as John did to set up a trading post. It is being built at Plimoth Plantation. The boat is being built as it would have been in the 17th century. Assuming it is ready the sailing may be this summer. We also take trips to Europe which have included Holland, Wales, England, etc. The last one was 1999 and we had 44 members attend (including myself!) It is a wonderful way to get to know your Howland cousins. The next trip is tentatively scheduled for the Spring of 2004. We meet every year in Plymouth in Aug, except the year the Gen. Soc. Mayfl. meets--we then meet in Sept. We have over 100 attend each year. The arch. dig is usually the week before the meeting. I invite any Howland's out there to join us! Our registrar is Judith Elfring at: jci4822@juno.com If you e-mail her include your snail mail address and tell her you heard about the Pilgrim John Howland Society from me. 3. Ginny, I checked Taunton VRs with no luck, then Middleboro - found an Abraham Pierce & two marriages and children, but no wife Lydia. Then started checking other sources for deaths - Middleboro Deaths by Wood and Old Cemeteries of Southeastern Massachusetts, p.110 - where I found the deaths of an Abraham Peirce and wife Lydia: Abraham d. 24 Nov. 1795, 54th yr. Lydia, wf of Abraham, d. 23 May 1817, ae 78. They are buried in Lakeville in a small cemetery in a field. Note that if Lydia was born ca1739 she could not have married Abraham in 1746. My next step would have been to check the Bristol co. & Plymouth co. VR CD however I'm having problems with my CD ROM drive and can't access it right now. Perhaps someone else with these CDs could do a name search for Abraham & Lydia for you. If there is no record of them in Taunton or Middleboro, perhaps events were recorded in a nearby town. (I've also checked Berkley.) Actually my wife Kathy is the descendant. It's great to meet you! We went to Portsmouth last June to explore all of the relevant cemeteries and the libraries scrounging around for materials-- We discovered the Schoonover connection there int he court records and such. Kathy is related through Rebecca White (b1789VT, d1867OH), also daughter of Abel. She married Nathaniel Searl (b1788VT, d1855OH). We are currently looking for info on a Mercy White (b1815-NY, d 1864-Scioto Co) who married Nathaniel's son Wyatt Searl (b1814, d1859 both portsmouth). I suspect she was related somehow to Abel or Seth, but haven't located a connections. Its funny, but in our family, it is "Mercy" that carries the tradition of being related to Peregrine White rather than Rebecca. Do you have any insights on that? Do you happen to have any other relevant documents on the families? We have several articles on the "Abel White" controversy as concerns his relationship to Peregrin. Glad to share. Please feel free to email us! Hope to hear from you! Vic & Kathy Varis
