    3. Don, At first, I thought as I am sure many of my ancestors must have when they come to this country. And that was, That very living person should have the right to his or her own opinions and ideas. Heck, they even fought wars so that YOU and I would have the same right of free speech, and the right to invent new and better ways of doing things. But, No way did they come to this country, and or fight all the wars so YOU and I could force OUR own will on others. I have as much right to use this list as you and your group do, As long as I go by the rules. I can assure You and everyone on this list that I have no interest investment, or own any company that would benefit from me doing my research the way we were doing it on this list before your DNA idea came along. And to be completely fair to your idea I went to the DNA website that was posted on this list and read it. "Even researched the cost of doing these test." So, It is very hard for me, and I stress, only in my opinion that there must be more than just DNA at the bottom of all this forcing of your idea onto the rest of us. Could it be the all-mighty $$$$$. Don't get me wrong, I wish you and yours the very best in your endeavors of DNA. And that, any of the companies that you may or may not support, and or may or may not be affiliated with do well. Remember, That is one of the most important reasons our ancestors came to this country. Free trade, The right to free enterprise, And most of all the right to free speech.. This will be my last "free speech right" on this subject. Just, as my list brothers Larry & Harry have the right to voice their opinions of what I should do. Hey, I still respect them for that was, and is still their right to do. Again, I do not care if all of you have DNA testing, that is your right. But, for me as one of this lists members, I can not afford the cost involved in you DNA testing program. But, Believe me Don, I do trust, and believe in DNA testing. It has been used in my family at least one time that I know of. "When they brought my dead cousin back from Vet-Nam." There were no teeth left for a dental match.!!!!! Dale. ----- Original Message ----- From: Don Maxwell To: MAXWELL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 9:16 AM Subject: [MAXWELL-L] New family relation found Pa & Ky/Ohio I consider any type of research technique concerning a specific family to be genealogy. Posted below is the most recent Maxwell connections from the DNA study. I have a few paper proofs in my possession that do not prove an exact relationship, only a close family relationship. An example would be a will where it says "James Maxwell ,... my kinsman..."...I do not know if this is a cousin, nephew, uncle, 2nd cousin etc....I understand that the word kinsman can sometimes mean son in law , father in law etc.... A DNA match is similiar , it proves a family connection but not an exact relationship...and it has the power of science backing it up! The most powerful use of DNA is the "mismatch" as it absolutely, irrefutably proves no relationship. When the paper trail runs dry, we ALL make our best guesses as to who the most likely father of an individual was....this study was designed to assist researchers at an absolute dead end....to disprove a relationship (a mismatch....allows one to stop searching a particular line)...or reiterates the need to continue (ie find the paper proof). Starting a new group is self-defeating as many may not see a possible lineage connection and miss important information. In other words its not about DNA , its about finding new MAxwell family connections. We need to respect each others postings and try to facilitate further advances and links between our lines. Now for the good news: DNA has found exact 12 matches between the following lines: 1.William Maxwell b bef 1740 (m. Eliz McCutcheon and Jane Pilson)2.William Maxwell b 1767 m. Nancy Robbins (this is the famous early Ohio Printer) 3.Thomas Maxwell (1738-1785) m. Ann Blackmar 4.Robert Maxwell (d 1792) m. Elizabeth _______ As posted yesterday Thomas (#3) and Robert(#4) were thought to be brothers as they both died in Nottingham township, Chester County, Pa...so no surprise...and it supports this theory. But William (#1 and #2) were complete surprises....the dates and similiar names point to a possible father/son or uncle/nephew relationship....William #1 may also have been in Chester Co., PA. prior to Ky. Another result involves the Adams/York Co., Pa MAxwell line found in Maxwell genealogy by Houston book. It involves a "mismatch" and they are therefore not related to those lines mentioned above: Summary (from Maxwell hx, and paper proofs): A.John and Izabel (Mcgrew) Maxwell had at least three sons: 1. James who married Mary Campbell 2. Robert who married Emelia Scoggin (Emme) 3. John who married Isabella Dodd Therefore, Robert Maxwell /Emme were uncle and aunt to Robert/Deborah Weirman of Ohio, and John Maxwell/ Isabella Dodd were uncle and aunt to John Maxwell /Ruth Cypherd. ( see Maxwell Hx book for details). I would have bet money they were related to my line and in fact I have spent years researching this clan as I felt this was the line to which my Thomas belonged. So I am going to refocus on William (#1 and #2 above) and begin a new search on lines that I have done essentially no research....the study has indeed provided huge benefit to me in my own personal search! Sorry for the long posting but I thought most people would like for me to share new information as it becomes available. Ya know - you talk about going by the rules and then go right on and insult him/her by insinuating that he/she will profit by the DNA (which is total BS) and that he/she is "forcing" this idea on you. Personally, I think you've bordered on breaking "rules" yourself. And others have talked about "the DNAers" being rude. I think they are just being defensive/responsive to an attack on their posts (they didn't initiate the rudeness). The people who don't want to read about it were being very rude (IMO) (by not respecting their right to post information). They (IMO) are not just posting irrelevant DNA information - they are posting information relating to the genetic tests to try to prove/disprove a MAXWELL genealogical line. I have a right (as do others) to post relevant geneology information. I find the subject of DNA is appropriate to genealogy (there is a science to it - not perfect yet but still a validity). There is a lot of genealogy that flows through this list that is not of interest to me but it is to others .. the same goes for DNA. I find it sad that some of the list members are so antagonistic about something that IS geneology related just because it doesn't "interest" them. jmo. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. If you only want the meat, skip to below my signature. I have stayed on the sidelines the past couple of weeks watching the discourse between the Pro and Con factions regarding the compatibility of genealogy and DNA research. For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would object to using modern research techniques to either support or challenge possible relationships between different lineages. I have been doing my own research since 1974. I have scanned through countless pieces of microfiche and rolls of microfilm, written letters to county courts and local offices of vital statistics and driven hundreds of miles to pour over large tomes at major libraries. Today I surf the Internet. I frequent many of the much maligned sites sponsored by the LDS, Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com. I subscribe to more than thirty RootsWeb mailing lists. I utilize e-mail to the fullest extent, asking as many questions of others as they ask me. I consider all of these are additional tools for me. I have not discontinued my old methods. I take that back. Today I only look at census records on microfilm as a last resort. The quality of the images available online and the ability to zoom in on them have given my eyes great relief! I am not ashamed. Additionally, I still follow the Golden Rule of Genealogy => Verify! Verify! Verify! I have corresponded and collaborated actively with Don Maxwell for at least five years. I assure you he is not in this (Genealogy or DNA Research) for the money. Don is a dedicated genealogy fanatic in the truest sense of the word. He and I are both at a brick wall on our Maxwell lines. Our common migration patterns cause us to suspect we are of the same line. Unfortunately, I am not a direct male descendant. Regardless, someday we will know if our suspicions are correct. I believe the modern methods will help us reach this goal. Enough soap box! Ray Justus Chandler, AZ Below are my four oldest Maxwell generations. I have many more details than are shown here If any of you believe you have a possible link, addition or correction, please contact me. Descendants of Thomas Maxwell 1 Thomas Maxwell b: in Dumfriesshire, Scotland .. +Hamilton . 2 Thomas Maxwell b: Abt. January 2, 1767 in Trenton, Hunterdon County, New Jersey d: October 5, 1820 in Montgomery County, Ohio ..... +Rachel Chambers b: in New Jersey NOTE: The first five children listed with this couple have asterisks after their given names. That is because I am still researching the connections and do not have definite proof that there are connections. It is easier for me to carry them as their children while I continue the research. I do know that Thomas and Rachel did have twelve children. Several pieces of information suggest strongly that the first five children are closely related to Thomas and Rachel if they are not actually their children. ... 3 David* Maxwell b: Abt. 1792 in New Jersey ....... +Elizabeth McCashon m: March 24, 1814 in Greene County, Ohio ..... 4 John Maxwell b: Abt. 1817 in Ohio ..... 4 William Maxwell b: Abt. 1821 in Ohio ..... 4 David K.
