First info was 1790 census in Surry County, NC., Sidney Maxwell. In 1793 he and his wife Catherine Elsberry and her father John Elsberry moved west to what is now Ashe County, NC. and were given land grants. We have never been able to find Sidney's parents or siblings although there have been some theories. Also, there were several Maxwell families in the early 1800s census, one of which I believe was a brother to Sidney but cannot prove it. Sidney's father in law, John Elsberry along with Sidney are written about in The Washington Ancestry and records of The McClain, Johnson, and forty other colonial American families, by Charles Arthur Hoppin. (privately printed in Greenfield, Ohio). There is another article about Sidney Maxwell in the Heritage of Ashe County, NC. Vol 1., and he is also mentioned in "Ashe Co., A History" by Arthur L. Fletcher, from the article "who came first," however, there is no clue or evidence to parents or siblings. Marylou Maxwell
