Has anyone done any work on the origin of the Maxwells in North Carolina in terms of being immigrants as opposed to migrating from the north? Josette Maxwell Boone NC
Jossette Thanks to Hurricane Hugo I can not give you much detail and will try to reconstruct what I can, but some thirty years ago a second cousin, Walter Maxwell who lived in Charlotte, NC at the time said that his father told him that my great grand father came here from Ireland. He was not a great wealth of specific documentable information. My grandfather was one of about 10 brothers and sisters whom Walter seemed to beleive, based apparently upon what his father had told him, grew up in the area around Athens Ga. My father was born in Athens Ga. and I am in the process of going there and doing some snooping with in the next couple of months. I have already contacted the Athens Chamber of Commerce and have the addresses and phone numbers of the departments to visit while I am there. In the mean time I intend to do the same here in Catawba County, as that is where my grand father and father settled for a while until moving to Burke County. I will also go to Charlotte and Morganton one day each to look around their records. I do remember Walter saying that one of my grandfathers brothers moved to Columbia, SC and one of the sisters married and moved to Charleston, SC. So, to answer your question my Maxwell line supposedly migrated directly from Ireland, I just can not connect many of the dots, But I will keep you in mind as I am looking.
