Hi Cousin: No advice to offer - everyone moved westward early on. Agnes might have been buried in Adams County, but we've never found anything to verify this or their church or her grave. It's quite possible that the parents of Agnes, Walter and Agnes Carson, are buried in Adams County but again, we can't come up with graves. Hope you have a wonderful trip. Janet, Ancestry.com's world access membership includes Scottish census transcriptions. They're poorly done but still useful. If you only have a U.S. membership, you can probably use your library's subscription to access them. You can also search the highly accurate FreeCen transcriptions: http://freecen.rootsweb.com/. Unfortunately, 1851 Dumfriesshire isn't online yet. I only found one Alexander MAXWELL in 1841 Dumfriesshire and no Alexander or Edward in 1861. However, they could have been in a nearby county, which I didn't check. Do you know when he immigrated to the U.S.? If not, check the 1900 and 1910 censuses to get a year. That will give you an idea of when to stop looking in the Scotland censuses. I also searched the IGI: https://familysearch.org/search/collection/igi. In the contributed records, i.e., those that are submitted by individuals with little or no supporting documentation, there's Edward William Maxwell born in 1849 Dumfriesshire to Alexander and Mary (no maiden name given) and John Maxwell, born to an Alexander and Mary in 1847 Scotland. In the indexed records, there are three official parish births to Alexander Maxwell and Mary McEwan, all in Penpont, Dumfriesshire: William (1856), Alexander (1858), and Walter (1860). You can search Rootsweb's DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY mailing list (http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/SCT/DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY.html) and its Dumfriesshire message board (http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.dfs/mb.ashx) to see if anyone has posted about your family. The link to the mailing list also includes instructions on how to subscribe if you'd like to join and post your interests. If you join the DGFHS -- http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/ -- you can request grave inscriptions for any surname. The Society's database includes transcriptions of thousands of monument inscriptions in Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, and Wigtownshire. Lastly, the Social Security Death Index reports that a James L. Wilkins died in 1994: James L. Edward was my great grandfather. He was born 10/16/1849 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland and died on 12/22/1920 in Fort Worth, TX. I've been told that his father was Alexander Maxwell (china merchant) and his mother was Mary MacQueen (sometimes spelled McKeon). I have access to Ancestry.com in the U.S., but I don't have international access to track down leads in Scotland. Does anyone know any of Edward's siblings? Are there any other relatives out there? I have most of the information on Edward's children as my Great Aunt Cecille Maxwell Reynolds typed up a great genealogy book on our family back in 1963 before there were computers to help her with her research. Another possible relative, James L. Wilkins of Tyler, TX, helped her with her study. I'm not aware of Mr. Wilkins' connection with the family but would love to know if he is still alive. 1963 was a long time ago and there hasn't been any contact with our extended family for many years. I would appreciate any assistance that anyone might provide. -- Thanks, Janet Maxwell Soper

Ive seen mention of Hugh, Robert and James Maxwell of Culnachtrie....but I cant seem to fit them into the correct branch of the Maxwell tree....my guess is 1600s... Don
VERY INTERESTING. Lyndall
Sue, So sorry for your loss. You did catch my attention with the mention of Hu Maxwell. Researching that given name as a brother to my ancestor. As a participant in the Highland Games for Clan Maxwell, if the children are not interested you may wish to consider the Tartan Museum in Franklin, NC. Just a thought. Cherish the memories.
