Thanks, I did go down to this area and have copies of the actual records that contained Jeremiah Englands family, including James Maxwell. It is clearly written Maxwell, but if I understand correctly you say that it still could be the names Maxfield. He only used a mark in the records so obviously he couldn't write. Also I notice the name Madewell in reocords in the area. Any connection to the Maxwell family? Here is Jeremiah Englands land grant. I can't find a few of Jeremiah's family in the 1860 census, including Jeremiah and Sally and the Maxwells. I'm wondering if they died. The family I do find are in IL and KY. Jeremiah England 1825 land grant Overton co "lying on the waters of Bear Creek" (body of grant says 1823). Surveyed 1830, 50 acers. East boundry of James Peak. 1836 survey Jeremiah England is entitled to the mountain district land...correct registry of an original grant to Jeremiah England. 50 acers ....bear creek West boundry of Thomas Turner for 100 acers Officers dwelling (maybe George Officer who asigned the land in the earlier grant)? .......to the beginning of the fierditaments and appurtenauis??....to the said Jeremiah Englandand his heirs forever. Does any one know what township this land would be close to? As far as I know I'm not related to the Maxwell family. Jeremiah England was the 2nd husband of Sally Romines, and I am related to her children with the Romines last name. Nancy England would be their step sister, but again I don't know Sally Romines b. 1817 tn maiden name. This is making the assumption she was married before. All of Jeremiah England and Polly Webb's kids that I can find, married local families, i.e. neighbors. I did a search on google earth for bear creek, and it is on the Putnam, Overton, Jackson, boarder. It currently is in Putnam co. I never found a record for the sale of Jeremiah's land, which we know he owned. Katherine Russell ----- Original Message ---- From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 12:58:21 AM Subject: Re: [MAXWELL] Overton co Maxwells-James Hello Katherine, I have been researching the Maxwell family of Overton Co., Tennessee for over twenty years and have also wondered who the James "Maxwell" who married Nancy England might have been. To understand the complexity of the question one must realize that there were three and possibly more Maxwell families in the Overton area in the 19th century and a family of Maxfields who were also listed as "Maxwells" in early records some of whom did actually adopt the name Maxwell. I am not able to say conclusively who this James Maxwell was, but I can tell you who he was not, and have some additional ideas for you. Of the various Maxwell families in Overton Co., the largest and most active group were the Windle/Hilham Maxwells (Group 1). This group of Maxwells consisted of the descendants of three brothers Henry Simpson Maxwell, Sr. (1794-1859) Thomas Maxwell (c.1796-1872), and John Maxwell (1805-1891). “James” was a common name in this family, but there was no “James” of the time period you are researching who could possibly have been married to Nancy England. Henry Simpson Maxwell, Sr. had one son James Maxwell (1814-c.1857) who was the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Overton Co. from 1837-1844. He was married to Hettie Goodpasture in 1839 and they were divorced in 1844 at which time James left Overton Co., to join his father in Marion Co., Arkansas and was allegedly killed in the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857. Another group of Maxwells (Group 2)--in Overton Co from about 1820 to about 1854--was the family of James Maxwell (1799-1879) the son of Bezaleel Maxwell and Nancy/Agnes Turner. This James was probably born in Madison Co., Ky and was married to Elizabeth Hayden. He and his wife Elizabeth and children moved to Texas about 1854. Early census records do show that their oldest two children were sons (born between 1820-1825), but their identities (if they lived to adulthood) are as yet unknown. It is possible that Jeremiah M. Maxwell who married Rhoda Poston was one of them, but at this time proof is lacking. This family of Maxwells and especially Jeremiah lived very close to the Windle/Hilham Maxwells and were associated with them. Additionally, DNA research suggests that these two groups share a common ancestor but at what remove is unknown. The third group of Maxwells in Overton Co., was headed by two brothers named Joel and David. They were brothers of Samuel Maxwell of neighboring Jackson Co. David who was married to Ruth Muirhead did have a son named James who was born about 1824. He was a captain in the Confederate Army and was killed in the war. This James was married at least twice. The first wife was dead before 1850. I don’t know what her name was, but if memory serves she was listed on the mortality schedule of 1850. I also place in this group Mary/Polly Maxwell, who it seems was a sister to David, Joel, and Samuel, who had several children who went by the name of Maxwell. Finally, DNA tests show that Group 3 was not related to Groups 1 and 2. Finally, there were the Maxfields who in many records went by the name of "Maxwell". They descend from Seth and James Maxfield who may or may not have been brothers. James Maxfield (1777-1854)lived in what is currently Clay Co. He had a son named James W. Maxfield who was born about 1819 who allegedly had a wife named Agnes born abt. 1820. Although we don’t think of them that way now, it is important to remember that the names Agnes/Nancy were interchangeable at this period much like “Peggy” and “Margaret”. Also in the records of Overton Co., is a woman named Agnes Maxfield who had several children. The eldest was known as Samuel Bender “Maxwell”. It could be that this Agnes Maxfield was Nancy England Maxwell. I can’t stress enough that the names Maxfield and Maxwell were often interchanged and when researching one of these names you really must pay attention to the other as well. Hope this helps, James Maxwell ----- PŮVODNÍ ZPRÁVA ----- Od: "katherine russell" <[email protected]> Komu: [email protected] Předmět: [MAXWELL] Overton co Maxwells-James Datum: 14.2.2008 - 17:47:30 > Anyone know what family this James Maxwell came from? > I also can't find them in any census records. > > > James is connected to my Jeremiah England family. Hello, Jeremiah M. Maxwell(c.1821-c.1898) was married to Rhoda Poston. He definitely WAS NOT the brother of Cornelius Maxwell(1818-1897) who married Nancy Peak. It is true that Cornelius died in Moab, Utah and was the first man to bring cattle into Grass Valley. Cornelius was the son of Thomas Maxwell(c.1796-1872) and Letitia Carmack. An ample paper trail exists for this couple and their children, and Jeremiah definitely was not one of them. However, Jeremiah M. Maxwell was closely associated with the family of Thomas Maxwell particularly with Thomas's brother John Maxwell(1805-1891) and John's son Napoleon Bonaparte Maxwell(1832-1922). Jeremiah Maxwell and Rhoda Poston had no children. "Rilly Loondy" and "George Ray" were orphans that Jeremiah took in. He took in several orphans and I have records dealing with the assigning of George Ray to him. Exactly who the parents of Jeremiah were is an unresolved question. The most likely explanation (which I have yet to prove or disprove) is that he was the son of James Maxwell(1799-1879) and Elizabeth Hayden. James was the son of Bezaleel Maxwell and Nancy/Agnes Turner. I am looking for information on Joel Maxwell, born abt 1814 in Overton Co., TN and married Clarissa Moore, born 12 Jul 1817 in Overton Co., TN. Their children were Eliza, born 8 May 1835 in Overton Co. She married Larkin C. Bunch. Mary (Polly) born 30 Oct 1837 in Overton Co. She married James Larkin Bunch. They migrated to IL and are found on the 1840 census in DeWitt Co., IL Paul Stillman, born 23 March 1840 in Dewitt Co., IL. He married Nancy Evelyn Smith. Joel Maxwell died before the 1850 census and his wife Clarissa Moore then married Joseph Alexander Nunneley and moved to Arkansas where 3 other children were born. Any help on this family is greatly appreciated. Anyone know what family this James Maxwell came from? I also can't find them in any census records. James is connected to my Jeremiah England family. Jeremiah England signs the petition to form Putnam co in 1841 along with a lot of Maxwells. 1848 he and his kids with Polly Webb sell slaves. (James Greenwood (America), James Maxwell(Nancy) and Isaac Craig(Susannah) are the names of his daughters husbands, sons are William Kinton England, John A England, and Thomas England. Ledda is unmarried daughter who later marries Isaac Craig after her sister Susannah's death. These are the known kids of Jeremiah England and his first wife Mary "polly" Webb m. 1811 Barren co KY. After 1840 he married Sally Romines who had two kids, John and Malissa Romines. Jeremiah and Sally had William, Rueben and Phebe England . 1848 Jeremiah gives guardianship of a Sidney England to John W Fowler, NH Turner witness. Witness's to bill of sale of slaves September 4th 1848 Overton records: Wm P goodbar witness to Greenwoods James Peak witness to Craigs James M Harp, J A Rennolds, Josiah Benjamin Gore witness to Ledda England . I'm looking for more information about Jeremiah England and family, especially the maiden name of his 2nd wife Sally Romines b. 1817 tn. She may have divorced Thomas Romines 1839 in Knox co tn plus may have connection to Benjamin Romines of Jackson/Overton co later Adair co KY-his kids marry Jeremiah's great nieces and nephews in Adair KY I can only find the Greenwoods,Criags, Romine and England kids of Sally and Jeremiah in 1860 Scott/Green co IL 1860 census. From pension file of John Romines it looks like they arrived in Greene co IL abt 1857. I can't (for positive) find Jeremiah and Sally, or the England boys born to Jeremiah and Mary (Webb), or James and Nancy Maxwell after 1850. Sidney England may be in IL with the Romines and above families. James Peak above I don't believe ever married a Susannah Greenwood, but had lots of kids. Maxwells married into this family also. I can't find James and Nancy Maxwell. Nancy was 10-15 years old in 1830. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals?
