Greetings for the Holidays.....I was thrilled to read the message from my genealogical mentor- Lt Col Wilmer "Max" Maxwell.....I am sure he has also stimulated several on this list to search for their Maxwell roots. I also wanted to say thank you to all of our Maxwell cousins. As Ken Norman stated we are trying to keep the Maxwell DNA site updated - but as you can see it has grown to a very large size!!!! I also wanted to reiterate what Ken posted that we are all indeed Maxwells no matter what our genetic relationship. It would make sense that as surnames were being adopted prob ca 1200 or so that several "unrelated" familes may have assumed the Maxwell surname- that dosent mean we arent all Maxwells it means we all arent descended form a single genetic ancestor. This is the rule for most (probaby all large) surname studies. Please let Ken Norman or I know if we need to update/correct any information we have posted. I also wanted to comment the the "groups" categories on the website. They should only been viewed as a "loose/possible" association - realizing there are several crossover samples (mutations which would appear to put several donors in 2 different categories/groups)- so just use the groupings as a rough guide and always compare the raw data to other samples (dont rule out othe possibilies just because they are not grouped with your clan). Best wishes to all for a Healthy 2010! Don Donald P. Hi Wilber, Glenda Simpson here from Brevard, NC I am so glad to see you back and running with our genealogy on Maxwell's. I am the one in case you do not remember that had the Andrew Maxwell b. 1770 and I have been looking for his father and where he came from. Great to hear from you and have a Blessed and Merry Christmas with your family. Max, Glad to hear things are ever-improving. I hope you have success with the voice-activated typing; I'm sure it would make for much smoother sailing. I've been plugging along with Don to keep the web site updated, but I fell behind a couple of months ago and only just caught up this week. I think it's good to go, now. Hi Sue, We have talked before. I am interested in this part of the conversation and would like some detail on them, if you do not mind. Alexander Maxwell and Caroline Hubbard Jones Mine lines start with William and Sarah (possibly McClain) Maxwell. Both born Scotland 1745 and 1753 respectively. Migration was Scotland-Ireland-Pa-Ohio they produced 13 children and we can confirm only 6 with many offspring. Believe one son to be an Alexander but can not find proof to connect him. Believe the Alexander is years older then yours probably late 1780s Here is why the Maxwell/Jones peeked my interest. A granddaughter, Frances Maxwell b 1806 Jefferson County, Ohio married William Jones b 1807, Maryland. I have found many surnames that intertwine throughout the branches. Do you know the ancestry of Caroline Hubbard Jones? I am 81 years old and have worked on my geneology off and on for at least 50 years. First off none of your families first names are similiar to my line. My line starts around 1750 with William & Sarah Duncan Maxwell. They had nine children,James,David,William,John,George,Sarah Margaret,Nancy Catherine & Mary Polly. Out of those children George becomes my line.He married Mary Fulton they had 11 children. These families were located in Cumberland Co. PA. near Lee's Crossroads , & New Carlisle,PA A Wilmer Maxwell ,No relation to me,In New Carlisle ,PA Had extensive work on the Maxwell's, I visited the Library in New Carlisle however at that time I did not know Wilmer. Over the years have talked to him.He was older than I and in a serious automobile accident Not sure he is still alive. In the first census taken in this country I think 1750 there were 15 William MAXWELL'S in that census in PA. Five brothers from George & Sarah came OH. Two settled near Mansfield,OH and the other three selttled near UpperSandusky,OH I am located in Mansfield,OH and have managed to record approx 1100 personup to present time now getting into the 9th generation Where are you located at the present time? Have tried to connect to other families however a lot of people are not interested. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of help. Perhaps you have information on my Maxwell line. My earliest known Maxwell is William "Billy" Maxwell (1863-1918) who lived in DeKalb County, Alabama. Billy married Anne Elizabeth Keith (1871-1943). There is a chance Billy's father was Braxton Maxwell. However, I have not been able to find any other information on a Braxton Maxwell of the right age. I am not a big fan of Facebook but I would be interested in participating in that or any other medium you come up with to share Maxwell information. Maxwell is a common surname, and may have been adopted by both your families dozens of generations back independent of one another. In the Maxwell DNA project, there are at least 20 genetically distinct lineages, but all are Maxwells. My husband's line seems to have a ton of people researching or connected with it but mine has run out- my brother has a son, and that is it for the direct line. John and I have not had children together. That is interesting that we might both have been adopted into the line- makes it more intriguing! John's Maxwells moved into WVA and were pioneers there- a really great family. You can find a very small bio of Hu Maxwell, his gt uncle, on Wikepedia. I have the long one from his Tucker County WVA history book. All of my relatives seem to be from NYC or NY . That makes it easy for me, except for the sparseness of the line. So far none mentioned sound familiiar except for Phillips. I have an Ida Phillips who married John Franklin Maxwell, from my husband's line. They went from Penn to WVA. Some went to Calif., some tto Ohio and some New York and to Maryland. There are probably other states, but the migration started with the children of Rufus and Sarah Jane (Bonnield) Maxwell. Some of the other names connected with the family are Chapman, Bonnifield, Lindsey, Smith, Davidson, Vanort, Woofter, Mitchell, Phillips, Osborne, Runnels, George, Estlack, Piper, and lots more. Sue
Sue, Just because you and your husband have different DNA results doesn't necessarily indicate that one of your lines was not originally a Maxwell line. Maxwell is a common surname, and may have been adopted by both your families dozens of generations back independent of one another. In the Maxwell DNA project, there are at least 20 genetically distinct lineages, but all are Maxwells. Hello Sue, Although I do not recognize any of your mentioned antecedents, I am intrigued that you say you have extensive documentation on associated relatives. Well, that is what Don Maxwell said when I found out we were not related- probably one of us was adopted into the clan. Hi Sue, To give you some idea of who I am.
