    1. Re: [MAXWELL] 1940 Census list of Maxwell"s in TN
    2. Barbara Krall
    3. Sue..The 1940 census is posted on Ancestry.com. Presently, you cannot search by name but you can look at every scanned page to find the person you are seeking. It is a free site. Go to Ancestry and at the top of the page select "search", then "census" and of to the side you will see the "1940 census". Fill in the state, county and city. I believe Thurman was on 99-80 page 37. The list begins with 00-1 up to 99-100, etc.. and later comes back to the missing pages where you will find 99-80. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of suemaxwell Sent: Wednesday, May 09, 2012 1:58 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MAXWELL] 1940 Census list of Maxwell"s in TN That is what I was asking about- what site? I am going to look through some descendant books and see where the name Thurman came from in John's family. I am sure it is there someplace. But this Thurman you found may have living children and if there is a connection I would like to make it. I will try Ancestry but I know that not all of the 1940 is there as yet. 3. Thanks for that explanation. I have just been on ancestry looking for any Thurmans born near where Hugh Thurman Maxwell was born and found some possibilities. I suspect it would have to be someone they knew as I cannot find that last name in any of the descendant books we have. Two of John's great uncles were historians- CJ Maxwell and Hu Maxwell. So we have tons of information- more than I can handle. I will do that. Many many thanks. Sue On 5/9/2012 1:43 PM, Barbara Krall wrote: > Sue..The 1940 census is posted on Ancestry.com. 3. Interesting... I have my own problems with the 1940 Federal Census. Since it is out now but without an index, I am having no luck finding persons of interest. I don't know where we lilved in 1940. Was it still Lowell, NC? Was it Slater, SC? Was it Newton, NC? I have spent quite a few hours going through those locations. There are just too many people unless you know what precinct, town, etc. they lived in. 3. Mr. Manning: This is in the vein of interesting coincidence, so far as I can see. I doubt there is a familial connection. That said: My maternal grandmother's name was Clara Maxwell. One of her sisters, Sara, married a John Manning. His grandchildren and I have been close for many years. All of this happened in Newark, New Jersey, USA, to which the original immigrant, John Maxwell, moved from New York in 1848, having arrived in the US, by way of deserting the British Army in Canada in 1833. He was from Clones, County Monaghan, Ireland and probably Roman Catholic. At least that is how he ended up after marrying Rosa Callaghan in Ireland. The Mannings were Irish and Catholic as well. Where they came from in Ireland I have not discovered. As your Maxwells appear to have been Scots, a connection does not seem likely. But who knows? All the Best with your researches... 3. List: Still looking for information regarding ancestry of Paradine Maxwell, b. 1837, Kentucky, m. Adam Poe, Confederate soldier from Missouri sometime prior to 1864, lived in Nebraska City, Nebraska, ca1865-1880, Missouri, ca1880 - before 1890, then Ardmore, Carter County, Oklahoma.  Died 1900, Carter County, Oklahoma, buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Carter County, Oklahoma.  Cannot trace her prior to 1864-1865 when Adam returned to Missouri from the war with her as his wife. Adam Poe was a miner in Leavenworth Gulch, Arapahoe County, Kansas, later Colorado Territory, in the 1860 Federal Census.  Many of the Colorado gold rush miners were from the South.  Enough to the extent that before the war that area was almost as divided as Missouri. Thomas Charles Luster, b.  Ardmore, 1900, married Edna Mae Duffin, Jackson County, Florida, lived & died, Marianne, Jackson County, Florida 1987, buried Dykes Cemetery, Jackson County, Florida was a grandson. Adam Poe from Missouri was oldest brother of my great-grandfather William Pike Poe of Osage and Maries Counties in Missouri.   William L.
