Genie & Earl, My name is L. Dale Shrader and my Grandmother was a Grant. Her mother, my G Grandmother Rebecca S. Grant b. 1856 in Bullitt Co. Ky was married to a Joseph F. Maxwell before she married my G Grandfather Lewis B. Grant b.1858 in Bullitt Co. Ky. Rebecca & Joseph had two children that I am aware of, William Albert Maxwell 12-15-1874, and Ollie Maxwell b. about 1877. Joseph F. Maxwell was the son of Hamilton Maxwell b.? Mason Co. Ky. This is all the info I have on my Grandmothers first husband. Any help with Joseph and or Hamilton Maxwell. Thank you very much. ldale@lightbound.com L. My research for nearly 40 years has been on the PA Maxwell clans 1750-1850. I think your Susan comes from the Major William Maxwell clan of the Mercersburg area. Welsh Creek runs near Mercersburg and Greencastle, in the townships of Montgomery and Antrim. Major William went into Peters Twp (Montgomery came out of Peters) about 1737. He was a Major in the colonial army and one of the first Justices of Cumberland County in 1750. Here's part of the family: 1. William Maxwell, (c1716-Oct 1777) b: Ireland, died in Franklin Co. * Susannah ___________ (c1716-Dec 1781) Ireland & Franklin 2. Patrick Maxwell (c1735-Sep 1786) * Hannah Whitehall, m: 19 Oct 1769, died 1805 3. Susannah Maxwell and six siblings So if your dates are correct (birth 4 Feb 1787) then Susan was born about five months after her father's death. I have no reason to doubt your dates! You have a marriage date of 1823, which would mean Susan was 36 years old........very old for that era! However, I have Susannah getting married to James McCLELLAND on 24 Dec 1802 at Upper West Conococheague Presby. Church by Rev. John King. She would have been several months short of her 16th birthday (maybe a little young, but certainly possible). My guess is that James died and John Elliott was her second marriage. Most of my data on this clan comes from the Kittochtinny Historical Society records in Chambersburg. Please let me know if you find anything to confirm my theory. Wilmer Maxwell, Carlisle, PA

Beth. My line runs from Jane McBranty and Alexander Maxwell, mid 1700,s in Scotland, who were shipwrecked on the shore of Ireland, where their son Guy was born July 15, 1770, eventually they continues on to America, One of their sons, Samuel Hepburn Maxwell,Sr(1797) maried Rebecca Conklin, and had my gggrandfather Samuel Hepburn Maxwell,Jr(1826) in what was Horseheads, New York. I direly wish I had not lost the history of Horseheads, as I have searched in vain for it on the net. Any advise would be appreciated, as I am fairly new to geneology with limited resources, what with four teenage children and my wife and self in change of life.. Tim
