Ray; I too am a Maxwell descendant with no male ancestors in between. I am interested in this DNA search but I would have to try the female DNA. My Maxwell ancestor was Susannah Maxwell b 4 Feb 1787 either in NJ or PA. She married John Elliott in Franklin co PA she had son Maxwell Elliott b 15 Jan 1821 in Welsh Run Franklin co PA. I think, not know her father or grandfather was captain Willian Maxwell of NJ. Do you have any connections? Been going through records to which I have access to try and identify Maxwell adults living in PA before 1750. Here's what I have so far: 1712 John Maxwell Acquired 200 acres in Chester Ct. 1715 John Maxell (most probably Maxwell) died 1715 noting that there were brothers (unnamed), sister Jane and a mother. This, most likely, is the same John Maxwell who acquired land 1712 given that the will is Chester Ct. Notes he has minor son John Maxwell 1725 8thm 28 New Garden Monthly meeting. Thomas Jobe, son of Andrew and Elizabeth Maxwell at Nottingham 1726 Elish Maxwell a witness to will of James Lindsay Londonogrove Twp Chester Ct. 1748 William Maxwell Exec. will of Andrew McCleary Lancaster Ct. 1748 John Maxwell Exec will of James McGrow (McGrew) Huntington TWp Lancaster but actually York (created 1749) 1735 William Maxwell Paxtang listed as churcn member, land record 1737 1738 William Maxwell b. Dear list, Listed below are some of the other Joseph Maxwell's that I have found in the some of the other Kentucky census. Seems like I have seen some posting here on this Maxwell list listing some Kentucky connection. So, I thought this may help someone. As we can see Hamilton Maxwell came from the MD area and his wife came from the VA area, and was in the Ohio Co. Ky.area in 1880. At the present time I am searching the VA, and MD area for Hamilton Maxwell b. about 1815.. MAXWELL, Joseph Son <1845> M W Bir: KY Cen: KY Boyle District 3 MAXWELL, Joseph A. If you only want the meat, skip to below my signature. I have stayed on the sidelines the past couple of weeks watching the discourse between the Pro and Con factions regarding the compatibility of genealogy and DNA research. For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would object to using modern research techniques to either support or challenge possible relationships between different lineages. I have been doing my own research since 1974. I have scanned through countless pieces of microfiche and rolls of microfilm, written letters to county courts and local offices of vital statistics and driven hundreds of miles to pour over large tomes at major libraries. Today I surf the Internet. I frequent many of the much maligned sites sponsored by the LDS, Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com. I subscribe to more than thirty RootsWeb mailing lists. I utilize e-mail to the fullest extent, asking as many questions of others as they ask me. I consider all of these are additional tools for me. I have not discontinued my old methods. I take that back. Today I only look at census records on microfilm as a last resort. The quality of the images available online and the ability to zoom in on them have given my eyes great relief! I am not ashamed. Additionally, I still follow the Golden Rule of Genealogy => Verify! Verify! Verify! I have corresponded and collaborated actively with Don Maxwell for at least five years. I assure you he is not in this (Genealogy or DNA Research) for the money. Don is a dedicated genealogy fanatic in the truest sense of the word. He and I are both at a brick wall on our Maxwell lines. Our common migration patterns cause us to suspect we are of the same line. Unfortunately, I am not a direct male descendant. Regardless, someday we will know if our suspicions are correct. I believe the modern methods will help us reach this goal. Enough soap box! Ray Justus Chandler, AZ Below are my four oldest Maxwell generations. I have many more details than are shown here If any of you believe you have a possible link, addition or correction, please contact me. Descendants of Thomas Maxwell 1 Thomas Maxwell b: in Dumfriesshire, Scotland .. +Hamilton . 2 Thomas Maxwell b: Abt. January 2, 1767 in Trenton, Hunterdon County, New Jersey d: October 5, 1820 in Montgomery County, Ohio ..... +Rachel Chambers b: in New Jersey NOTE: The first five children listed with this couple have asterisks after their given names. That is because I am still researching the connections and do not have definite proof that there are connections. It is easier for me to carry them as their children while I continue the research. I do know that Thomas and Rachel did have twelve children. Several pieces of information suggest strongly that the first five children are closely related to Thomas and Rachel if they are not actually their children. ... 3 David* Maxwell b: Abt. 1792 in New Jersey ....... +Elizabeth McCashon m: March 24, 1814 in Greene County, Ohio ..... 4 John Maxwell b: Abt. 1817 in Ohio ..... 4 William Maxwell b: Abt. 1821 in Ohio ..... 4 David K. > My Maxwell line IS my mother's line. Does that mean > my BROTHER should be > tested, but not me? > > Thanks > Kate If Maxwell is your mothers maiden name (meaning her father was a Maxwell of course) then the ones who should be tested was HER brother (your m-uncle) or her father (your m-gpa). In other words you need a guy with the last name Maxwell to test the y-dna (male dna). HTH. (if you need more info there is a dna list (for those that are griping about dna posts). __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Genealogy is like a triangle, a lot of us are sitting in the lower part of this triangle trying to figure out how to find the link to the person at the top of the triangle. However, there's many parts to this triangle, the one guy at the top has 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, 16 great great grand parents, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512,1024 and keeps on going. I'm sitting here in the eighth generation around 128. It's a long hard trail for some of us looking towards the top. I need a link to the top, after years and years of searching a lot of us are no closer to the top, the triangle just keeps getting wider and wider at the bottom. I have found close to 15,000 Maxwell's descendants who are related to my Thomas Maxwell and there's hundreds of thousand's out there. I have talked to, emailed, searched LDS, Rootsweb, Ancestry, library after library looking for one more step to the top. I've been on this site two years and still found nothing extra towards the top. Lets do what ever it takes to find our answers, by asking for help from others or new technology, the end result is to find answer's. The word genealogy and genealogist is from the word GENE and that means (Webster)" one of the complex protein molecules associated with the chromosomes of reproductive cells and acting as a unit or various biochemically determined combinations, in the transmission of specific hereditary character from parents to offspring" . If any one of us could find a way to help, why not use it. If DNA doesn't work or help it will fade in to the sunset. So just give it a chance. If Columbus believed there wasn't a chance, he'd never set sail to America. If all of us didn't believed this site would or could help we wouldn't be listed. I sorry if I affined anyone. But in 1776 my Rev. Thomas Maxwell was a Revolutionary soldier, he had along with many of your ancestors the 3 G's, GOD, guns and guts and he used all three. That's my belief still almost 300 years later. We've taken God out of schools now judge it for yourself. Now to help others do some family searching, Back in the earlier years our ancestors used name patterning. The first male was named after the father's side, example : My Rev. Thomas Maxwell's parents were Thomas Maxwell and his mother was Keziah Blake . Their first child was female name Johannah, named after Keziah's mother Johannah Ball, the second child a male named John, maybe after Thomas father, the next child was Rev. Thomas Maxwell named after his father and grandfather. When Rev. Thomas married Mary Pemberton they had eleven children. The first a male named John, still within the male line and second was a female again named Keziah within the female side, third another male, again named Thomas. So when searching, use your common names within your line. I have found this type pattern throughout the thousand's of names in my records and while viewing other lines. Just remember the further back we go, the smaller the section of the triangle and the closer we get to each other, lets get close and find all our answers together. It all started with one MR. MAXWELL making us alol brother's and sister's. United we stand divided we fall. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Ceelys@cs.com> To: <MAXWELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 12:23 PM Subject: [MAXWELL-L] Maxwell List Complaints > Well said!! Just for the record, there is nothing rude about having two forums one for oldtime genealogy and one for DNA genealogy. My state has 3 formums for the state and then some. One for each county. Not because each county doesnt want the others to be on their list, but because the each cover different areas and are of interest to people, different reasons. The flow of Maxxwell queries has slowed down because we are people are tired of not finding what they are looking for. The majority of each digest is on DNA. By the time you weed through to get to the other postings, precious time is wasted because what used to be people sharing their family record and pedigree information is now all some scientific discussion. If you find a match you still dont have names and or dates, just generalities. It is know different than knowing you are a decendant of a president with no proof of names and dates inbetween. Having 2 formums would not cause anyone to miss anything. Each forum could refer to the other in the list administrations instructions at the beginning of each digest. And anyone who cares could just join both forums and not miss a thing. Im sure listers will start posting more again, when things go back to old time genealogy. Im on many lists and this is the only one losing valuable postings to DNA postings. And like I said there is nothing rude about posting to a separate forum where those interested would be able to get their daily dose. Also, when we had regular postings and less DNA there was no need for JUNK mail from from people with "selfish retorts" because the DNA non stop stories are what have brought all of this about. We are not being selfish because we want information from a list that we signed on to because it was full of useful family record and pedigree information. That is why we joined! SO soon there will be no more people asking "questions" because they will be losing interest and moving on and missing out on sharing valuable information with those who want the same. Im sure it would make those very happy who need more room for the DNA stories and in time that is all that there will be on this list. If we wanted DNA to be the main topic we could have signed on to the Science list. The "retorts" selfish or not are getting old including mine. Maybe we can get the list back to what it used to be. If not we can always post through Root-D@ rootsweb.com or Roots-L @ rootsweb.com where we can actually ask and get answers to our questions. Vickie Cooking0404@aol.com List Administrator, there is no disrespect meant to you by this, it is just that many of us were happy with the list before DNA, and now we arent getting questions or answers unless we go off the list.
Well said!! I have never found any connection on this list to my Maxwells, but I haven't complained because someone did not help me. I just keep looking and do know how to hit the delete key. Can we stop picking at the DNA posters. You may find out that one of them is a "cousin" somewhere down the road. SLC (Looking for the parents of Sarah Maxwell born about 1816 in Logan Co., KY, married Samuel N. Crewdson 13 January 1834 in Logan Co., KY, lived in Atchison Co., MO in 1856 where Samuel died. She died in Calaveras Co., CA after 1880.) > I have as much right to use this list as you > and your group do, As long as I go by the rules. > <snip> this forcing of your idea > onto the rest of us. Could it be the all-mighty > $$$$$. Ya know - you talk about going by the rules and then go right on and insult him/her by insinuating that he/she will profit by the DNA (which is total BS) and that he/she is "forcing" this idea on you. Personally, I think you've bordered on breaking "rules" yourself. And others have talked about "the DNAers" being rude. I think they are just being defensive/responsive to an attack on their posts (they didn't initiate the rudeness). The people who don't want to read about it were being very rude (IMO) (by not respecting their right to post information). They (IMO) are not just posting irrelevant DNA information - they are posting information relating to the genetic tests to try to prove/disprove a MAXWELL genealogical line. I have a right (as do others) to post relevant geneology information. I find the subject of DNA is appropriate to genealogy (there is a science to it - not perfect yet but still a validity). There is a lot of genealogy that flows through this list that is not of interest to me but it is to others .. the same goes for DNA. I find it sad that some of the list members are so antagonistic about something that IS geneology related just because it doesn't "interest" them. jmo.
Don, At first, I thought as I am sure many of my ancestors must have when they come to this country. And that was, That very living person should have the right to his or her own opinions and ideas. Heck, they even fought wars so that YOU and I would have the same right of free speech, and the right to invent new and better ways of doing things. But, No way did they come to this country, and or fight all the wars so YOU and I could force OUR own will on others. I have as much right to use this list as you and your group do, As long as I go by the rules. I can assure You and everyone on this list that I have no interest investment, or own any company that would benefit from me doing my research the way we were doing it on this list before your DNA idea came along. And to be completely fair to your idea I went to the DNA website that was posted on this list and read it. "Even researched the cost of doing these test." So, It is very hard for me, and I stress, only in my opinion that there must be more than just DNA at the bottom of all this forcing of your idea onto the rest of us. Could it be the all-mighty $$$$$. Don't get me wrong, I wish you and yours the very best in your endeavors of DNA. And that, any of the companies that you may or may not support, and or may or may not be affiliated with do well. Remember, That is one of the most important reasons our ancestors came to this country. Free trade, The right to free enterprise, And most of all the right to free speech.. This will be my last "free speech right" on this subject. Just, as my list brothers Larry & Harry have the right to voice their opinions of what I should do. Hey, I still respect them for that was, and is still their right to do. Again, I do not care if all of you have DNA testing, that is your right. But, for me as one of this lists members, I can not afford the cost involved in you DNA testing program. But, Believe me Don, I do trust, and believe in DNA testing. It has been used in my family at least one time that I know of. "When they brought my dead cousin back from Vet-Nam." There were no teeth left for a dental match.!!!!! Dale. ----- Original Message ----- From: Don Maxwell To: MAXWELL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 9:16 AM Subject: [MAXWELL-L] New family relation found Pa & Ky/Ohio I consider any type of research technique concerning a specific family to be genealogy. Posted below is the most recent Maxwell connections from the DNA study. I have a few paper proofs in my possession that do not prove an exact relationship, only a close family relationship. An example would be a will where it says "James Maxwell ,... my kinsman..."...I do not know if this is a cousin, nephew, uncle, 2nd cousin etc....I understand that the word kinsman can sometimes mean son in law , father in law etc.... A DNA match is similiar , it proves a family connection but not an exact relationship...and it has the power of science backing it up! The most powerful use of DNA is the "mismatch" as it absolutely, irrefutably proves no relationship. When the paper trail runs dry, we ALL make our best guesses as to who the most likely father of an individual was....this study was designed to assist researchers at an absolute dead end....to disprove a relationship (a mismatch....allows one to stop searching a particular line)...or reiterates the need to continue (ie find the paper proof). Starting a new group is self-defeating as many may not see a possible lineage connection and miss important information. In other words its not about DNA , its about finding new MAxwell family connections. We need to respect each others postings and try to facilitate further advances and links between our lines. Now for the good news: DNA has found exact 12 matches between the following lines: 1.William Maxwell b bef 1740 (m. Eliz McCutcheon and Jane Pilson)2.William Maxwell b 1767 m. Nancy Robbins (this is the famous early Ohio Printer) 3.Thomas Maxwell (1738-1785) m. Ann Blackmar 4.Robert Maxwell (d 1792) m. Elizabeth _______ As posted yesterday Thomas (#3) and Robert(#4) were thought to be brothers as they both died in Nottingham township, Chester County, Pa...so no surprise...and it supports this theory. But William (#1 and #2) were complete surprises....the dates and similiar names point to a possible father/son or uncle/nephew relationship....William #1 may also have been in Chester Co., PA. prior to Ky. Another result involves the Adams/York Co., Pa MAxwell line found in Maxwell genealogy by Houston book. It involves a "mismatch" and they are therefore not related to those lines mentioned above: Summary (from Maxwell hx, and paper proofs): A.John and Izabel (Mcgrew) Maxwell had at least three sons: 1. James who married Mary Campbell 2. Robert who married Emelia Scoggin (Emme) 3. John who married Isabella Dodd Therefore, Robert Maxwell /Emme were uncle and aunt to Robert/Deborah Weirman of Ohio, and John Maxwell/ Isabella Dodd were uncle and aunt to John Maxwell /Ruth Cypherd. ( see Maxwell Hx book for details). I would have bet money they were related to my line and in fact I have spent years researching this clan as I felt this was the line to which my Thomas belonged. So I am going to refocus on William (#1 and #2 above) and begin a new search on lines that I have done essentially no research....the study has indeed provided huge benefit to me in my own personal search! Sorry for the long posting but I thought most people would like for me to share new information as it becomes available. There were more than 400 hits on the Maxwell Family DNA Study during the first week, so a lot of listers are interested. Like anything new or unusual, there is always a lot of interest in the beginning and then the traffic will slow down. Imagine if someone found the 1790 census records in a warehouse......the bulletin board would be swamped! I agree, rudeness should stop....but how rude is,"take them off, let them have their own forum???" The normal flow of Maxwell queries has slowed, but that's because the listers have stopped posting the queries. There is plenty of space for all of us.
OOPS. You used that word. ALMOST. Still proves nothing. Does not anyone (dna) have a DEANE CLARENCE MAXWELL born about 1880 (possibly lived in southern Arkansas) in their family? Would like to share data. Thanks.
I sure agree with your comments. I wish they would put the DNA testing into a seperate listing, so my e-mail wouldn't be filled up with junk every morning. It certainly detracts from my search for my branch of Maxwells. Dean

To the list administrator and listers: I find that this discussion on DNA has caused many people to become very rude to those not interested in the DNA testing. Why isnt this DNA discussion on its own list ex. DNA-MAXWELL-D or L @ rootsweb.com. The above digest had 10 postings, 8 of the were about DNA. Some of them were down right rude to those wanting to get back to genealogy. Genealogy is why people signed on to this list. To tell someone that they can just delete them "just like I do to yours" is uncalled for. To tell someone how to unscribe from this list because a rooter asked "how do I get off this list" , because they have heard enough is also ridiculous and rude. I realize that people think you can just "delete" what you are not interested in but....... I have the digest form, and I have to scroll thru them all to read the 2 that were actually giving and asking for information about genealogy. When I first joined this list, I found it very interesting and helpful. Now all that is discussed is DNA. I thought you had addressed it and that it was going to be put on another list. Maybe I misunderstood with all the constant bickering and people wanting to move on the genealogy information instead of nothing but DNA. My Maxwell line is from Delaware and possibly Maryland. I have gotten information that might lead me to the some of the family. A test isnt going to give me names, dates, etc and the thrill of the chase is to find this information and make contacts that will assist in those finds. I think it just is wonderful if it is what you feel you need to do to make you be connected to someone. But it is not what everyone wants to do. Some of us just want to work on those paper trails and research for the facts. Since so many people "must argue and be rude about this" and until this started I had not run into one rude person on any genealogy list, then the solution would seem to be, make DNA it's own mailing list. That way they can discuss it to their hearts content and everyone else can go back to get10 postings about the old tyme version of genealogy that they signed on to receive. I hope that after you review this posting, you share it with the list. If it causes those researching DNA to chose to "Delete" this posting. Then that is what they should do. If they spend their time deleting postings with genealogy information and questions willing to be shared with others, then they are probably not interested in the same thing as the rest of us. It would be nice to go back to having people share their information and being kind to the others on this list. Vickie Cooking0404@aol.com
