I'm sort of embarassed to ask, but the beef they slaughtered to eat, was it a Dairy cow ? Or did they have Beef cattle back then...I really don't know and just thought about it...ugh. Marcia
There's some good information on cattle and their various terminology, kinds and purposes, and history, here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle Ox are steers that are used for work. I didn't know that. I suppose they could also be eaten, particularly if they could no longer work or if the farmer were desperate for food. (Someone sent me that news privately, probably by accident, as the list is mishapenly set up in a very unusual way such that if you click reply you reply to the individual instead of the list. But I coudln't just post her e-mail back to the list!)
